I am a licensed clinical social worker who can guide you in the process of becoming the person you’ve always wanted to be. I use empathic listening skills, humor, and reflective/challenging questions to help you discover the changes you can make to improve your life. I provide the support you need not only to make these changes, but to recognize, maintain, and celebrate the progress you achieve over time. Together, we will develop realistic goals and find solutions that can make a difference in your well-being. I specialize in working with people who are ready to make the changes they need to improve their lives. However, if you don’t know where to start, what to do, or how to do it, that's ok. Let's join forces to help you find the answers to those questions. My clients describe me as comforting, helpful, relatable, down-to-earth, funny, challenging and calm. They say I have a warm approach and am a good listener. My teenage daughter stated, “mom, you speak in Facebook (inspirational quotes)!” I have longer-term programs to help reduce the effects of anger, manage the symptoms of anxiety and depression, and process grief and loss. I also specialize in working with youth ages 10+ (male and female), utilizing my years of experience working at summer camps in my younger days. It’s been said that I “speak kid” (their style of language) and am dramatic which helps me develop rapport with young people quickly and effortless. Together, we can make the changes that you’re hoping to make in your life!

I work with individuals and couples struggling with issues including addiction, codependency, parenting, body image issues, self-worth issues, anxiety and depression, among others. My work is routed in a depth-psychological approach that focuses on the subconscious, and how issues that we are unaware of are sabotaging our lives. I am outgoing, warm and friendly, and working with me is like having a close friend in your corner, holding you accountable and helping you understand yourself as deeply as possible. In my previous career, I was an actor, and love working with artists of all types. I understand Hollywood and show business and the difficulties that come with creating a career out of an artistic passion. I am a mother and love working with parents who are struggling with the very real difficulties that come with the hardest job in the world. In my work with couples, I help both parties understand what it is that they truly want as individuals, and how to achieve it as a team. I am passionate about my job as a helper and a healer, and hope to be able to help guide you into becoming the best version of yourself.

She has worked extensively with patients suffering from physical, sexual, and emotional abuse trauma. Further, Dr. Charness has a wealth of experience with PTSD, depression, anxiety, suicidality, and self-harm. She incorporates many modalities in her sessions, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and somatic work. She effectively supports clients working through past trauma and finding resolve and peace within themselves, which is crucial to individual mental health and functionality. Inclusivity and remaining culturally sensitive to patients are of utmost importance to her. Dr. Charness has also contributed to several books, including Voices of Pain, Voices of Hope, Students Speak About Racism, and Learning Through Discussion. Her most recent passion is her blog on Psychology Today (under law and crime) regarding the intersection of law and mental health. She focuses primarily on how legal rulings can impact our mental health, motive, trauma-informed interrogation, and investigation, particularly in domestic violence and sexual assault cases, and the failings of both the legal and mental health systems. Teaching about the realities of what life looks like inside the courtroom for a victim of domestic violence or rape, whether it be to a classroom of students or an audience of readers, is incredibly important to her.

I understand what it's like to be anxious, to be depressed, or to just feel lost. So I'd like to help you, if I can, to find your way towards wellness, happiness, and a fulfilling life. But I know you need the right help at the right time, and that is my first goal -- to make sure I'm the right therapist for you now. I don't work with all issues, so let's go over that now. And if I'm not the right person, I'll give you referrals for other qualified therapists. I want you to have what you need, and a therapist that is great for you, whether it's me, or someone else. So here's some info on my work: I do work with individuals, and with couples. I don't work with issues of Domestic Violence, Suicidal Ideation, Self Harm, Harm to Others, Addictions, Eating Disorders, Anger Management or any legal issues. What I do work with is self-doubt, anxiety, sadness or depression, and relationship issues. I'm good with helping people heal wounds about themselves. And I love doing relationship work: I believe that love and belonging are most people's priority in life, and if you are on the journey to find that, or need to repair a love you already have, I'm glad to help if I can. I'm familiar with most modalities of therapy. I focus mostly on Strengths-Based work, Narrative Therapy, and Compassion-Based CBT. And I'll be paying close attention to you and engaging in ongoing assessments: how you feel, think and believe are crucial to helping us find what's right for you. So communication is key. We'll talk, we'll listen, we'll collaborate, and we'll work as a team towards getting you to feel better and make choices that honor your needs, and your chosen path.

Hi, I’m Courtney. I am here to help you through whatever it is you are struggling with. After receiving a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University, Los Angeles, I trained at the Maple Counseling Center in Beverly Hills, using a psychodynamic approach. I also utilize other behavioral methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy, family systems therapy and emotionally-focused and attachment therapy for couples. Before becoming a psychotherapist, I lived in New York City and worked in national and international fundraising, and received a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University. I am compassionate, authentic, interactive, and direct. My therapy room will be a safe space for you where our relationship will create healing, discovery and insight. Having the comfort of a grounded therapist sitting across from you can make the difference between feeling validated and feeling alone! I understand that starting therapy for the first time or finding a new therapist can be an intimidating process. In our first session, I will assess your particular needs and together we will determine if I am the right fit for you. I believe in creating a unique and tailored approach designed to meet the individual needs of each of my clients, and each of my couples. I provide therapy, counseling and coaching to teens, young adults, adults, and couples in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes, and throughout the South Bay Los Angeles area. I recently expanded my offices to include other areas including, but not limited to: Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood and Malibu. Additionally, I can provide telehealth video or phone sessions from anywhere across the state of California.

My work is rooted in warmth, directness, and genuine relational connection, guided by a psychodynamic and attachment-focused lens. I walk alongside individuals, couples, and families from diverse backgrounds, drawing on thousands of hours of clinical experience. I work extensively with the lived experience of marginalization—of feeling outcast or never quite belonging—and the internal pressures of a relentless drive to improve or achieve. These are distinct yet often intertwined realities. Clients come to me sensing their struggles run deeper than surface symptoms. No matter how hard they strive, they're met with the same feelings of inadequacy, emptiness, and a deep sense of isolation – Something invisible guides these patterns. My practice focuses on navigating depression, general anxiety, ADHD/neurodivergence, and the lingering effects of childhood adversity and past trauma. What defines our work together isn't just the challenge itself, but how we address it. By attending to attachment wounds and relational trauma—those invisible forces that shape so much of our experiences—we don’t just manage symptoms; we heal the roots. This might look like untangling how early relational experiences fuel your depression or anxiety today; helping ADHD brains thrive by tending to the shame or self-doubt that often accompanies neurodivergence, while building strategies that honor your unique wiring; and transforming childhood adversity and past trauma from a weight you carry into a story you now own. What moves me most profoundly is witnessing clients rediscover the integrity of their selves—not through "fixing," but through coming home to the internal freedom that lets them envision more for their lives. Together, we’ll create space for you to believe in possibility again: to breathe easier, trust yourself, and reclaim those simple joys and wild dreams you inherently held as a child—before the world taught you that you were too much, yet not enough.

If you’re a client who works with me, you can trust that you have a therapist with the highest level of education and training (B.A from Princeton; Ph.D. from UCLA), extensive experience working with individuals and couples, and a record of professional accomplishment (University Professor, Director of a Graduate Program in Counseling, author of multiple books and articles in the areas of Clinical Psychology and Human Development.) In addition to my work in psychology, I have a background in the creative arts as a Grammy award-winning songwriter and a published novelist. Because of this added dimension, some of my clients have welcomed suggestions for excellent stories, novels, movies, or television shows that depict characters who face similar challenges to their own and our discussions of these works and characters have provided these clients with another valuable source of understanding and growth. On a personal note, I grew up on the East Coast before relocating to California and I’m the father of two daughters.

I am a compassionate and direct therapist who prioritizes building REAL CONNECTION. My approach is anti-diet and rooted in Health at Every Size (HAES) and LGBTQ+ affirmative care. I went through my own journey to heal my relationship with food and my body, and for the past 13 years, have centered my career around helping others do the same. I strive to offer therapy that is grounded in connection, knowledge, and authenticity in order to help my clients develop healthier relationships with food, their bodies, and themselves. We are more than conquerors! You already have the capability to make changes that help accomplish your goals, experience healing, and combat the most difficult symptoms. However, we were never meant to go it alone. The therapeutic relationship is a partnership—it is teamwork. It is joining forces with one another. One of the greatest attributes I can offer in this alliance is empathy. Non-judgmental exploration will afford the understanding necessary to determine what is hindering satisfaction. I am Kimberly Jones: Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I have over 10 years of experience in offering psychotherapy to all ages. My expertise is couple’s therapy encompassing marriage and relationships. You will be provided a safe space to bring your most complex matters as I am confident in supporting honest dialogue. In addition, mediation during difficult discussions and understanding the anatomy of an affair's impact on both partners can also be provided. I would assist in managing the threat of divorce, post-separation, and co-parenting. In the healing pursuit, individuals will experience neutrality, intimacy repair, trust building, improved communication, and conflict resolution. These are all skills necessary to strengthen the relationship and introduce a new way of seeing life together.

My name is Marissa Ruiz, Licensed Marriage and Family therapist in California. Some of my other titles include mother, wife, ex-wife sister, daughter, niece, grandmother and friend. Sharing these titles are important to me because they represent current relationships and past relationships. My past relationships include grief, trauma and growth. I survived obstacles in my life with the help of a therapist. My counseling style is pretty laid back. I have been described as supportive, caring, empathetic, supportive, good listener and working together with yourself to make a goal. I like to focus on identifying your strengths and helping you to maximize them to overcome your obstacles.

Search therapists by insurance

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by California rather than a city like LA?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across California from San Francisco to San Diego! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in California.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on Couples Counseling?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, Couples Counseling, is filtering therapists in California that work with patients with similar concerns.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
