Hello! I’m excited to be a part of the team at Grow Therapy. I’m a licensed clinical psychologist and I completed my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from California Lutheran University in 2016. My background includes working in college/university psychological service centers, an outpatient psychiatric center, and an outpatient treatment program specializing in DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy). More recently, I’ve completed EMDRIA approved EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) training. Prior to my doctoral training at Cal Lu, I worked at a non-profit community counseling center in Santa Barbara, CA. The way your course of therapy unfolds will depend on a number of things, including your goals for therapy, your strengths, and your history. In our sessions, I will be focusing on understanding your needs and goals, and getting to know you as a whole person. By exploring your current life and personal history, we develop an understanding of why you think, feel and behave as you do. Therapy is a place to focus on yourself, which is a rare opportunity in our extraordinarily busy lives. Therapy can help you solve a specific problem, provide symptom relief, gain more general self-acceptance, as well as create personal change. I work collaboratively with individuals struggling with issues including: Anxiety and Panic, Depression, Emotion Dysregulation, Trauma, Insecurity and Fearfulness, Problems with Alcohol and Drug-Use, Grief and Loss, Self-Acceptance, Stress, Sexuality, Relationship Difficulties, and Peak Performance. I utilize evidence-based techniques including CBT and DBT, and have found through experience that these methods combine well with psychodynamic/insight oriented therapies. My knowledge, experience, and care are dedicated to helping clients meet their goals and live a more fulfilled life.

I know it's not easy to begin the journey to better self understanding, compassion, and mastery. My aim is to create a safe environment in which we can explore your own personal history, themes, and challenges, in order to find resources and solutions to the obstacles that hold you back from being exactly the person you've always wanted to be. I will pay attention to who you are as an individual, reflect back your strengths, and help you to tie together the seemingly disparate aspects of your life so that you realize how much sense you make, have compassion for all phases of your development, and leave behind what no longer serves you to find the life you've always wanted. Together we can build up your sense of self, your resilience, and your ability to find peace of mind.

The decision to connect with a mental health professional takes courage and self-awareness. The pressures of life can be overwhelming and too much to handle on our own. Most times, with our busy daily lives, we don't take the time to check in with ourselves physically, mentally, or emotionally. Being more mindful and aware of how our mind and body interact and influence each other can help reduce anxiety, depression symptoms, improve mood and give us a better understanding of not only ourselves but have the ability to appreciate the world around us through a more positive lens. My approach is cognitive-based while also using mindfulness techniques. During the therapeutic process, I aim to empower my clients to regulate their emotions and become skillful in handling those things within their control. I specialize in complex trauma, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, exploring life transitions, and negative thought processes. I aim to create a safe space for clients to feel comfortable discussing difficult topics. I want clients to feel comfortable to be able to share their thoughts and feelings without the feeling of judgment.

I bring both clinical expertise and lived experience to my work. Having navigated significant life transitions myself, including divorce and co-parenting, I approach each client with genuine empathy and a grounded, realistic perspective. Reaching out takes courage, and I don't take that lightly. I know that starting therapy can feel intimidating. That's why I offer every potential client a complimentary 30-minute consultation before we begin - an opportunity to get to know one another, ask anything on your mind, and determine together whether we're the right fit. There are no wrong questions and no pressure. To schedule a :30 minute no charge consultation please follow this link: https://tinyurl.com/No-Charge-Consultation My style is warm and direct. Sessions are collaborative and active - we'll be working together toward something concrete. There is nothing more rewarding than watching a couple arrive on the other side of hard work with clarity and renewed intention, or witnessing an individual move from sadness and confusion to finding their footing and a version of themselves they feel good about. I work exclusively via telehealth - and I believe that's a genuine advantage. There's real value in therapy that happens on your own terms. No traffic, no babysitter needed - show up as you are. It's not unusual for a little one to wander in, and those moments often give me a richer understanding of a client's world than any office could. Outside the office I'm a mother, grandmother, and devoted companion to golden retrievers Whitney and Ginger. I'm closely connected to my 87-year-old parents, connected to communities in Marin County, North Lake Tahoe, and Bend, Oregon, and endlessly curious about the world. Licensed in California, Oregon, and Nevada. If you're ready to take that first step, I'd love to hear from you.

I’m Malavika— my clients call me Mal. Reaching out for support isn’t always easy, and I’m really glad you’re here. Has life been feeling more overwhelming lately? Is anxiety or feeling down making things harder to manage? Are you navigating life transitions, loss of direction, or the pressure of cultural or family expectations? Do you feel like you and your partner keep having the same arguments over and over? I work with individuals who are experiencing relationship challenges, as well as those managing multicultural and immigrant family dynamics. Together, we will explore patterns that feel hard to shift and find practical ways to move forward. My approach is collaborative and grounded in mindfulness, attachment-informed work, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).

You don't have to have it all figured out to start therapy. Whether you're carrying years of trauma, navigating anxiety and depression, or just feeling like something's off and you're not sure why — you deserve a space where you can show up exactly as you are. I'm a person-centered therapist with a background in community mental health, where I've worked with people facing a wide range of challenges; anxiety, depression, substance use, and complex trauma. I bring empathy, authenticity, and yes — humor — into my work, because healing doesn't have to be rigid or clinical. I'm deeply committed to body justice, social justice, and affirming care for LGBTQIA+ and trans communities and their allies. All are welcome here.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by California rather than a city like LA?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in California. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across California from San Francisco to San Diego! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in California.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What happens during the first therapy session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
