Starting therapy can feel empowering, confusing, or even intimidating—and it’s worth taking a moment to recognize the courage it takes to take this first step toward caring for your mental health. I strive to create a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment where you can explore challenges related to anxiety, depression, self-care, and more. My goal is to help you strengthen communication and boundaries with yourself and others so that you can improve your quality of life and move toward the future you envision. Therapy is not just about overcoming obstacles—it’s also about personal growth. Together, we’ll clarify your goals and identify strategies to help you move toward them, whether that means change over the next month, six months, or a year. You’ll leave our sessions with practical insights and “next steps” you can put into action right away. I believe life’s purpose isn’t simply to be happy, but to find meaning—and within that meaning, joy emerges. While the journey isn’t always easy, it can be transformative. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Addictions Professional, Internationally Certified Drug Counselor, and Behavior Analyst. I take a strength-based approach, helping you use your unique abilities to address challenges. I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing to empower you in creating lasting change. Most importantly, I bring a relaxed, compassionate, and trustworthy presence, fostering a therapeutic relationship where you feel safe and supported.

My journey to becoming a therapist started 29 years ago on a personal recovery journey, recovering from personal trauma and addiction in the entire system growing up including family, and coming from a low SES background, therapy became a way to reconcile the change I was going through in my life. Working with and helping others has always been a calling of mine, and becoming a therapist was a natural extension of that ongoing work on both myself and in my work with others. Beginning with a humanistic approach means meeting the client where they are at, and then conceptualizing the approach with a combination of humanistic and positive psychology, systems theory, and recovery-oriented systems of care.

I consider myself a relational and systems-based therapist. That means that I value discussing relationships and the impact of them on you. I also seek to understand my client as a whole person and not just your symptoms. At the heart of my work is the belief that the therapeutic relationship itself is meaningful and often mirrors patterns that show up outside the therapy room. Together, we will explore these dynamics with curiosity and compassion and without judgment. I deeply value your goals and concerns, and I also believe therapy is a space where thoughtful, honest feedback can be both empowering and healing. Above all, my goal is for therapy to feel collaborative and supportive.

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply ready for things to feel different, you don’t have to figure it out alone. I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 20 years of experience providing trauma-informed, evidence-based care. Licensed in California since 2005, I work with adolescents, adults, and families navigating anxiety or depression, trauma, substance use concerns, relationship challenges, and major life transitions. Outside of my work as a therapist, I value spending time outdoors, staying physically active, and being present with my family. I’m a father of five—one son and four daughters, including two stepdaughters—which has given me a deep, lived understanding of blended family dynamics, parenting, and the complexities of family relationships across different stages of development. I enjoy fly fishing, snowboarding, working out, and other outdoor pursuits that help me stay grounded and present—values I often encourage clients to cultivate in ways that feel meaningful and sustainable to them.

Whether you’re struggling with overwhelm, burnout, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, relationships, or adjustments to what I like to call the kiss/slap of life, we (you & I) have the ability to traverse these issues and find perspective, prosperity, and peace. I’m Shadya, a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and therapist, who has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from the University of CA Davis, and a Master’s in social work, with a specialty in mental health and addiction, from Simmons University in Boston, MA. I tend to utilize multiple approaches and modalities to work collaterally with my clients to aid in the realization of their ideals of betterment. I have more than 10 years of experience working with folks of different demographics and communities, who have struggled with varying degrees of mental health distress. With me, you will be centered as the expert of your own life, while my aim is to humbly use my body of knowledge to aid in the opening of doors in the spaces where you may perceive only barriers. It may help you to know I came to this work organically as I have grown, healed, and become a better version of myself through my own engagement in the therapeutic process. I fanatically believe in the power of aligning with mental health professionals, and I’ve had the privilege to bear witness to clients become who they want to be, learn to live how they choose, fall in love with themselves, and sometimes, slay dragons. You inherently have within you the potential to do the same. Make an appointment, and let’s see where we can begin. *All identities, orientations, quirks, and kinks are profoundly welcome.

I work with individuals seeking meaningful change, greater clarity, and a stronger sense of self. My approach is grounded in warmth, empathy, and the ability to meet clients where they are—supporting them in feeling seen, understood, and empowered as they navigate life’s challenges. My work is informed by more than 60 years of life experience, both professional and personal, which brings depth, perspective, and authenticity to the therapeutic process. After several careers and at age 50—supported by ten years of sobriety—I felt called to create a more fulfilling and intentional life. Through my own work in therapy and career counseling, I chose to return to school and build the life and practice I have today. This journey continues to shape my compassion, insight, and respect for the courage it takes to pursue growth and healing. I earned both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Santa Clara University in California. In alignment with California requirements for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist, I completed 3,000 supervised clinical internship hours at Almaden Valley Counseling Agency in San Jose, where I worked with individuals, couples, families, and children. This experience strengthened my ability to work across the lifespan and address a wide range of personal, relational, and emotional concerns.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by California rather than a city like LA?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in California. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across California from San Francisco to San Diego! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in California.

Will my therapist take GTEB?

Yes! If you use GTEB you’ll be asked to verify your Member ID at the time you book the appointment. However, if you don’t have GTEB you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What happens during the first therapy session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
