Hi, my name if Kim Gunderson, and I have worked as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for 23 years. I have worked with middle school kids in a school setting, supervised incoming trainees at Cal State, University Fullerton, and have concurrently worked in private practice with a variety of individuals, couples, and families. You are the expert of you! I work collaboratively and aid in helping you identify underlying themes that may be adding to your distress.
Our first session will focus on understanding what prompted you to reach out, what your goals are, and your current coping mechanisms.
I was raised in an interactive family, who focused on helping others with kindness as an essential role in communication. I grew up singing and dancing, which helped me with connection and energy related to myself and others.
I enjoy working with individuals and couples going through life's transitions. This may entail career change, loss or separation of a loved one, empty nesting, challenges between couples and or pertinent people in one's life. We all go through transitions from what is familiar to what is unfamiliar. This relates to a period of time in which we begin to feel dysregulated and destabilized and need tools to work through the confusion to bring us back into balance. Once things begin to stabilize, a new beginning may occur. This process will have helped us identify challenges in the future and learn to face them with less fear as we have discovered new coping tools to address the next challenge.
Psychodynamic
This therapeutic approach focuses on how your thoughts affect your interpersonal relationships.
Eclectic
I draw from the many different theories I have studied over the years.
Existential
This is a broader understanding of your being in the world - dealing with anxiety, understanding of death, and freedom to make choices.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
I view us as whole but as having parts. When our parts get out of balance, it's a matter of identifying and understanding what's happening in order to create balance again.
Couples Counseling
I really enjoy working with couples. Communication in relationships is key. Identifying the interactive nuances and verbal communications helps bring awareness and alternative options of behaviors.
