I’m Dr. John Biroc. I’ve been a professional baseball player, professional actor on stage and screen, professor of both theater and psychology at major universities in Southern California. I’ve been involved with working with rock bands, as well as being Clinical Director and Therapist Supervisor in mental health and addiction centers throughout Southern California. I lean quite heavily on the creative process and it’s reliance on others.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

I pride myself, and not having any judgmental qualities that may interrupt the normal flow of understanding within the client. It was once said, “an event in life is simply an event; we give those events meaning.“ This happens to all of us.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

While I was a professor at UCLA, Graduate School of Social Welfare, I specialized in physical role-playing (psycho drama). My goal is not to protect you from your feelings, but to aid you to understand where these feelings came from and what to do about them.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My concern is with the mental health and well-being of the client. This is manifest through early learning and trauma, and through the reinforcement of early behaviors. This often leads to malfunctioning as an adult. I do not believe in treating symptoms, but prefer to go to the source of behaviors and choices that lead to negative outcomes.

My treatment methods

Attachment-based

Connections with others is a key factor of mental health. I am concerned about your methods of connecting with others and how you developed your means of relating. I am also concerned about getting to the root of issues and not simply treating symptoms. I’m also a big supporter of the creative process and its connection with mental health. Past clients have been actors, rock groups, and writers.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

When you are born, you find solace in seeking feelings, music, conditions, etc. that are familiar to your experience in the womb. You often find comfort in the familiar rather than what is best. This is the beginning of anxiety, bad habits and poor relationships as you grow.

Compassion Focused

You had help in getting the way you are. I want to release all guilt and shame from your enablers of the issues.
