Philip Nekai is a licensed mental health professional with expertise in multicultural counseling. After teaching high school history on his native island of Saipan, Philip realized he had a knack for creating safe spaces for those around him to express themselves. He then went on to obtain his Master’s degree in Counseling through the highly regarded Community Based Block (CBB) program at San Diego State University. Through his previous experience in crisis work and, most recently, high school mental health counseling, Philip knows that every voice deserves to be heard. In his spare time, Philip enjoys Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and hanging out with his dogs, Kiefer & Hashbrown.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Our first session will center around getting to know each other. Besides working on whatever presenting problem or issue that brings you into therapy, I think it's really important to understand who you are as a person and what are the values that motivate you so we can come up with an achievable goal together.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My greatest strength as a provider is the focus I put on collaborating woth the client. I try to be aware of my own biases and learn from my clients individual background and viewpoints.

My treatment methods

Person-centered (Rogerian)

Essentially, person-centered therapy is a modality where the therapist meets the client where they are. Having a safe, nonjudgmental, and empathetic space will be the basis of my practice.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT explores the relationship between your thoughts, behavior, and feelings. It is helpful to gain an understanding of our internal process so that we can work towards changing how we externalize our emotions.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

DBT is useful in that it provides a structure and understanding of problematic patterns as they arise. Also, this modality focuses on learning tangible skills to regulate our emotions
