Daly City, CA - Accepting clients in CA

Hi, my name is Craig. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess "something" isn't OK. That "something" may be new or it may have been around for quite some time. You might be able to describe that "something" perfectly or maybe you don't know what that "something" is, but you know you are just feeling "off". Maybe you are familiar with therapy, or maybe this is the first time considering it. The only thing that matters at this moment is that you are taking that first step. I start from where you are at and work with you from there. No assumptions, judgements, or "one size fits all" approaches. Just a desire to understand you, your needs and your goals for therapy. Therapy is a different experience for everyone. I understand that and we will work together in addressing whatever has led you to taking this first step.

Hi there, I am Joanna Have you ever gone to therapy and found it hard to open up because the sessions appear rigid and impersonal, and maybe you felt judged? In my practice is my goal to lead sessions in a non-judgmental way, with the belief that clients are the experts in their own lives. I like to describe my relationship with clients as a relationship among equals. My role in the session is to help you process some of the challenges you are experiencing and offer skills that can help create the change you want to see in your life. My theoretical orientation is dialectical behavioral therapy and I try to hold the balance between acceptance and change, this means accepting that although things might be difficult at this moment we can learn new behaviors so life can be improved. My goal is really to help clients increase their overall satisfaction in life and relationships. I am also trained in trauma work to help clients process traumatic experiences.

I believe that therapy can heal, but I also know that telling a stranger about your deepest pain can be a strange feeling. Perhaps you've been feeling sad, depressed or worried, and hopeless that anything in your life can change. Or maybe you aren't sure what you would even want help with. You know you feel bad, but if someone were to ask you "How can I help?", you aren't sure what you would say. These problems can feel permanent and unsolvable. After all, something feels broken and unfixable, so how could you not feel that it takes all the energy you have just to get up in the morning and go about your day? Depression or anxiety can also feel isolating, as if nobody else could possibly understand. You may have even received advice from people who you feel mean well but can't understand what you're going through. Depression and anxiety are not permanent or unfixable, and therapy can help. Imagine feeling peace of mind, and excited about life and its possibilities. It starts by learning about you and going at your pace. As a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist with over 16 years experience working with adults and teens, I've seen therapy work, and I feel lucky that I get to be part of that journey for others.

In addition, I specialize in navigating medical trauma for patients, providers, and first responders. My experience as a medical social worker for close to a decade gives me the unique skills to help you cope with and adjust to challenging diagnoses and medical treatment. Similarly, my firsthand experience as a provider in the hospital allows me to support other medical professionals (e.g. physicians, nurses, medical assistances) with the specific challenges that come with providing medicine in our current health care climate. I'm passionate about healing through self-exploration. I hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a safe place you deserve to discovery your true self.

I work with individuals who grew up with a pervasive sense that they were “outside the box”. Perhaps this was due to neurodivergence, cultural differences or struggles with gender and/or sexuality. Many of my clients arrive with previous diagnoses of ADHD, autism, anxiety and/or depression. They often have a creative side that has been suppressed in order to focus more on developing a professional self. Many of my clients report feeling like they have to wear a mask in the workplace and in social situations. It is not uncommon for them to feel lost, numb or lacking direction in their life. As a therapist, my strengths are in my ability to follow creative lines and tie together seemingly complex thought and behavior systems to give you deeper awareness of the issues that present for you. My education and experience in community health and mental healthcare has prepared me as a therapist to provide therapeutic care that goes beyond asking deep questions. My approach to therapy is non-judgmental and is driven by the strengths of my clients. If this resonates with you, I invite you to reach out. Together we can find a path.

I’m a first-generation, Vietnamese, transgender, and queer therapist who brings both professional training and lived experience to the work. My approach is rooted in empathy, curiosity, and a deep respect for each person’s unique story. In my practice, I often draw from EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to help clients process trauma and distressing experiences in a way that feels empowering and restorative. EMDR supports the brain’s natural healing by using bilateral stimulation—like eye movements or tapping—to reprocess painful memories and reduce their emotional intensity. I also use Narrative Therapy, which invites clients to explore the stories they’ve been told or have come to believe about themselves. Together, we uncover how those stories were shaped—by culture, relationships, systems, or past experiences—and work toward reclaiming narratives that center resilience, agency, and authenticity. I understand the importance of creating a space where clients feel seen, affirmed, and safe to show up as their full selves. Whether you’re navigating trauma, identity exploration, or simply seeking to reconnect with your inner voice, I’m here to support you in that process with care and collaboration. Are you looking for a mental health letter for gender-affirming surgery? I write those! Feel free to reach out for short-term therapy services to complete the letter assessment process with me. *I am not currently accepting family, couples, or group counseling inquiries* *Pls inquire about my reduced rate spots at $150/hr*

Throughout my professional career, I spent 10 successful years working in the banking industry and another 10 years in pharmaceutical sales, exceeding in various sales and managerial positions. However, I was constantly drawn to psychology and eager to study the relationship between conscious and unconscious phenomena and the role of feelings and thoughts. Therefore, I was keen to make a career change to becoming a psychotherapist. To pursue my goal, I enrolled in a master's degree program in psychology, which required a significant time commitment. I often spent long hours in the evenings and on weekends reading textbooks, writing papers, and preparing for exams. Balancing my studies with my full-time job was challenging, but I was determined to succeed.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by California rather than a city like LA?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across California from San Francisco to San Diego! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in California.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
