I was born in the US, but I was raised in Mexico. I lived in Tijuana for 10 years when my parents decided to move us across the border to Chula Vista, California. As a first-generation Mexican-American, I experienced a duality of cultures. I was often judged for either being “not Mexican enough” OR “not American enough.” I also faced enormous pressure to be successful – to justify my parents’ having left their beloved country so my sibling and I could have a better life. This is one of many reasons I decided to follow this path: to help those who feel alone in their journey. That’s how I felt when acculturating to this country. I earned my Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) at San Diego State University (SDSU). I was going to go directly into the workforce and eventually go back for my master’s, but an awesome professor challenged me to apply right away so I wouldn’t lose momentum. So, that’s what I did. I ended up getting my Master of Social Work (MSW) at the University of Southern California. It took some time and courage to finish all my licensing requirements, but it was worth it! I’ve been licensed as a clinical social worker in California since 2019. I am certified in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma-Focused CBT.

“The courage to change is the courage to be a stranger to yourself.” We say we want to evolve, yet we cling to habits that keep us small. Why? Because the "old you"—even if miserable—is predictable. Change is disorienting because it requires us to step into a life we haven’t rehearsed. If you sabotage your growth just as things shift, you aren’t "broken". You are likely operating on an internal blueprint designed to protect you from pain, abandonment, and conflict. Your brain is pulling you back to the "unhappy familiar" because it believes staying stuck is safer than moving forward. My goal is to help you uncover the invisible scripts that keep you stuck. We bypass the cycle of "trying harder" by addressing the identity your habits are fiercely protecting. Real change isn’t a cosmetic fix; it's the brave process of letting go of who you were to make room for who you are becoming. In session, we will work on: The Fear of the New: Navigating the "liminal space"—the middle ground where the old you is gone, but the new you doesn't feel like home yet. Identity Deconstruction: Identifying the stories you tell yourself and testing their validity. Nervous System Regulation: Learning to stay present when the "alarm bells" of change ring. Developing Sovereignty: Moving from victimization to empowerment, where you are finally the one making the decisions. Results for my clients often look like: The "Pause" Reflex: Noticing the urge to self-sabotage in real-time and choosing a new response before auto-pilot takes over. Narrative Shift: Moving from a language of past failure to a focus on current capacity. Tolerance for the Unknown: Feeling "steady ground" even when circumstances are shifting. Internal Alignment: The friction between your intentions and your actions begins to disappear.

Hi I am Kao, I firmly believe that as humans we have an innate desire for growth and balance. Unfortunately, often we physically respond to ingrained negative cues and messages that get stuck in our body. Many times these old cues manifest themselves in our body as anxiety, depression, and other trauma responses. It can feel like we are living life just trying to cope with the loudness of these negative messages. What if instead of just gaining tools to “cope” with these trauma responses, we could eliminate them all together? How might your life look? My hope is that in our work together we will be able to address wounds and move towards healing so that you don’t have to “cope” anymore. Instead you can thrive and have a sense of self-awareness that brings constant peace and clarity.

I consider myself a relational and systems-based therapist. That means that I value discussing relationships and the impact of them on you. I also seek to understand my client as a whole person and not just your symptoms. At the heart of my work is the belief that the therapeutic relationship itself is meaningful and often mirrors patterns that show up outside the therapy room. Together, we will explore these dynamics with curiosity and compassion and without judgment. I deeply value your goals and concerns, and I also believe therapy is a space where thoughtful, honest feedback can be both empowering and healing. Above all, my goal is for therapy to feel collaborative and supportive.

You might be at a turning point—drained by people or work, cut off from the sense of purpose that used to guide you, or trying to make sense of a major life change. You may feel anxious, a bit obsessive at times, or weighed down by depression or habits that keep you stuck. Maybe you’ve built a life that looks fine on the surface but feels misaligned underneath. You might catch yourself wondering why you can’t just feel better despite all your effort, knowing that more of the same “success” won’t make you happy. These are the kinds of crossroads I help people navigate. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Sacramento, California, providing emotional and behavioral support to individuals facing personal and professional challenges, and moving through major life transitions. Years in community mental health and residential treatment taught me how to support people through recovery from addiction, trauma, and complex mental health challenges. Before that, I spent 15 years in the arts and culture field and non-profit sector in Washington, D.C.—work that exposed me to the pressures, expectations, and burnout that high-performing professionals often carry. These experiences shape how I understand the worlds my clients move through and the weight they’re trying to set down.

I’m an LMFT/ CSAT/ CMAT doing private practice counseling and group therapy in Los Angeles. I’ve been a therapist for almost 7 years, experienced in treating sex/ porn addictions, trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, substance use, ADHD, and church hurt in private practice, recovery clinics, and faith-based settings. As a CSAT, I pay special attention to intimacy disorders, and believe the best way to treat addiction, depression, or sin is about finding real hope and meaningful connection rather than “managing bad behaviors.” What I really want you to know about me is that I believe so much in the therapy process, because my life was changed forever by the counselors that have helped me to overcome my own mental health struggles. A little more about me that makes me who I am as a therapist? I was a pastor for 17 years and I feel humbled when I can come alongside ministry leaders in a crisis of faith. As a gay Christian, I’m especially proud to share my story with other LGBTQ+ individuals who long for self-acceptance and inclusion in the church. I was a songwriter in my younger days and enjoy finding creative ways to help people heal. I believe we find our greatest purpose in the center of our pain, and I will probably get super excited when you do too.

I'm an LCSW with a strong focus on supporting high functioning individuals experiencing burnout, anxiety, and a lack of professional/personal balance. I approach therapy collaboratively and from a relational perspective. Simply put, I meet people where they are and from there, we work together to discover solutions that work by utilizing evidence-based tools from a variety of approaches (CBT, ACT, EMDR, polyvagal theory). My personal style is compassionate, grounded in authentic connection, and infused with warmth and humor.

Over the past 15 years, I have been steeped in Somatic modalities aimed at healing the mind-body connection. Beginning with an interest in meditation, I followed the thread through studies in yoga therapy, yoga nidra, shamanic practices/nature ritual, trauma-release exercises, grief process co-facilitation, to completing my Masters in Somatic Psychology from California Institute of Integral Studies. I am trained in EMDR and the Attachment Based Family Therapy model (ABFT), and have worked with hundreds of clients struggling with a wide range of challenges including complex trauma, anxiety, depression, dissociation, and relationship/family conflict. I love connecting with people and listening through to their longing for healing. I have a knack for holding multiple perspectives within complex relationships, and collaborating to resolve blockages that impede connection with oneself and the world.

I’m a Marriage and Family Therapist who works with thoughtful individuals and couples who work hard yet still feel anxious. Many are looking for more than surface-level coping skills—they want deeper understanding and lasting change. Many of the people I work with are navigating anxiety, life transitions, relationship challenges, or big questions about meaning, purpose, and identity—often while holding demanding roles in their personal or professional lives. In addition to my clinical work, I teach couples counseling as an adjunct professor at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Teaching keeps me grounded in both theory and practice, and it reflects how much I genuinely enjoy helping people understand relationships more deeply—whether that’s learning how conflict works, how attachment shapes connection, or how to communicate with more honesty and care. I also bring an unconventional but deeply human element into my work: humor. I’m a comedian outside the therapy room, and when used thoughtfully, humor can help lower defensiveness, build trust, and make difficult conversations feel more approachable. Therapy doesn’t have to be heavy all the time to be meaningful. I have particular experience working with healthcare workers and others in high-pressure systems, including those balancing responsibility, burnout, and emotional fatigue while still needing to function at a high level. My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded, integrating attachment-based, somatic, mindfulness-based, and practical strategies tailored to each client. Above all, I aim to create a space where people feel safe, understood, and free to explore what really matters to them—at their own pace, and with curiosity rather than judgment.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by California rather than a city like LA?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in California. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across California from San Francisco to San Diego! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in California.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What happens during the first therapy session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
