Hi! I'm Dr. Carolynn Gray, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with 15+ years of experience in mental health. People who work with me get a lot of clarity about the next steps in their mental health journey, confidence that they are doing what they can to reach their goals, and tools for navigating mental health needs in the complex and ever-changing world we live in.
Once the legal and administrative matters are out of the way, you'll have the choice of moving to either hearing more about me and how I work OR your reasons for seeking therapy. You might want a little more time to settle in and feel comfortable with me, in which case I will be happy to share a little more about my experience, work, and style. This can also be a great time to ask any questions you may have. But if you are ready to dive in, then so am I! You can start with what brought you to therapy this time, and I'll ask some questions to help me get a good picture of how I might be able to help. Wherever we start, we will do a little bit of both before the end of the first session. This will give us a good foundation for our work together. Throughout the conversation, you will also hear from me about how I might support you with some of your goals or how my professional training and experience match your needs. I also like to check in at the end to see how the session went for you. I might ask something like: Did you get your needs met? What other questions do you have? Is there anything you would like to start with next time?
People I work with tell me I am organized, clear, confident, transparent, creative, insightful, articulate, and authentic. This comes from my background as an executive leader in mental health organizations, leading teams and working in various programs. It is also informed by my decade of experience as a clinical supervisor where I help new therapists with their clients; this exposes me to even more ways of doing therapy and working with clients, building my experience exponentially.
You might enjoy working with me if you prefer direct and transparent communication, spending time defining your wishes and goals for therapy before diving into interventions, and someone with both broad and deep experience. You might also want to work with me if you like to get compassionate, honest feedback and reflections from your provider about their observations and insights in a judgment-free manner. You also might like working with me if you're neurodivergent! As an neurodivergent therapist, my lived experience makes it easy to understand and connect with neurodivergent clients. If you're not sure what this means or what it might mean to you, please feel free to ask! This is a new area of learning for a lot of people, and everyone starts as a learner on a new topic (including me!)
Most clients I have worked with present with some amount of trauma history, and especially sexual assault and interpersonal violence. With these clients, even when the trauma is not the focus of our work together, the focus is on giving clients as much choice and freedom as possible since most traumas involve a lack of autonomy.
Motivational Interviewing is the starting place for most of my work with clients. It centers the client's wishes for therapy and blends those goals with my expertise and experience as a clinician.
