My focus is on cognitive behavioral therapy and complicated grief therapy. Sometimes we have to face our losses to be able to move forward, sometimes we have to confront our negative thoughts to clear our mind and focus on what is in front of us now. We try to cope with the world’s challenges based on the values and strengths we built during childhood, but there are many ways to rekindle our creativity and joy as adults to re imagine a new path. I am a compassionate listener who can hold a non- judgemental space for patients to share their beliefs, desires and concerns.

I received a Masters in Counseling Psychology from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (currently known as Sofia University) in 2012. I have also received certification in Psychedelic Integration, Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, Somatic Therapy, and as a yoga teacher. Prior to my personal therapy practice, I worked at psychiatric settings, community mental health, group rehabilitation homes, and correctional facilities. I have worked with migrants, minors and adults, patients detoxing from drugs and alcohol, and have facilitated integration groups for clients undergoing ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. I have experience working with patients and clients of all ages, gender identities, racial backgrounds, and mental health issues. In my private practice, I currently focus on working with adult clients who are experiencing the impacts of complex trauma, depression and anxiety, as well as major life transitions, existential concerns, chronic illness, neurodivergence, and non-ordinary states of consciousness. Many of the therapeutic modalities that I use with clients are ones that have transformed my own life. I am passionate about sharing the tools and skills that benefitted me for the wellbeing of others, and for our collective healing.

I help them expand their mindfulness, improve their assertive communication skills, and view themselves, and, consequently, the rest of the world, as living beings worthy of love and respect. I don't merely believe in therapy, I know first-hand the beneficial power it can provide. Before seeking mental health services for myself, not only did I suffer from low self-esteem and other depressive symptoms, I also suffered from severely disturbing panic attacks. I am grateful each and every day that I no longer suffer from those symptoms. This is just one of many reasons why mental health is the greatest passion of my life.

I am a professional counselor with a combined 10 years of experience in educational counseling, psychotherapy, severe mental illness and psychiatric evaluations. Overall, I am a counselor, but as a person, my life experiences are what have influenced the different areas of counseling that I am involved in. I immigrated to this country at a young age and the experiences that I had as a student led me down the path of school counseling. I wanted children who were bilingual to have a positive experience in which they didn’t feel that their language barrier was equated to their general educational abilities. I grew up in an area that was plagued with poverty, drugs, homelessness. Where high school dropout rates, teenage pregnancy and early death due to gangs were amongst some of the many challenges that were faced daily. I became intrigued by the power of the mind and the resiliency that we as humans have. Wanting to understand people's behavior led me to study psychology and work in severe mental health. I had a desire not only to help, but to understand how we can be affected by our environment and overcome it, to know where our human resilience came from.

With over 25 years of experience working with people from all walks of life, I offer guidance to those feeling stuck, hopeless, or helpless. If you feel as if no matter how hard you try, your mind continues to bombard you with negative feedback, I can help you. Through a methodical approach to thought identification, you can learn to pinpoint the thoughts that trigger negative emotions and keep you trapped in a cycle of despair. My goal is to empower you to reclaim control over your mental state and find meaning in your life. Together, we will work towards a brighter and more fulfilling future. I can also teach you how to live a meaningful life based on your values and goals. If you are suffering from PTSD, I can help by providing you with the tools needed to challenge the thoughts that you may have developed as a result of your trauma. If your relationship is suffering due to PTSD symptoms, I can help you develop healthy coping mechanisms that can improve your relationship. I began my career working with undocumented single mothers in need of financial skills to support their families. From there I worked with the undocumented population helping them secure resources for their basic needs and empowering them to become self-sufficient. I also worked with the LGBTQIA+ community in three different roles: providing psychoeducation to newly HIV diagnosed individuals and their families, as a case manager providing resources for newly HIV diagnosed undocumented citizens, and finally, as a clinician providing individual therapy for those with depression, anxiety, or PTSD. Later in my career, I worked with the Forensic Juvenile Department providing in-home family therapy to families involved in the criminal justice system. I have also worked with individuals suffering from personality disorders. Currently, I provide individual and group therapy.

Well done on taking the first steps to a better you! Simply acknowledging you need support and then reaching out can be the most difficult, yet empowering part of the process to a happier you. As a clinician, I specialize in working with teens, young adults and women as they navigate chapters throughout life. My goal is to facilitate a safe and nonjudgemental space for clients to verbalize thoughts and feelings. I provide a holistic approach that assesses overall physical health and its impact on mental health; looking at sleep patterns, nutrition, and social relationships. Utilizing a variety of different clinical modalities, I work alongside my clients to aid them in identifying strengths and maladaptive patterns that may interfere with happiness. Sacramento, CA - Accepting clients in CA

Hi, I’m Marixa. I hold a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy as well as a Master of Science in Educational Counseling. I have experience supporting individuals who are navigating challenges such as low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, and feeling “stuck” or disconnected. I draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches tailored to each client’s unique needs. One method I often integrate is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which, when combined with talk therapy, has helped many of my clients reduce the intensity of their symptoms and move closer to their goals. I have also completed the Brain Health Professional Certification from Amen University and am part of the Amen University alumni network of certified professionals. This training informs my work with a more holistic, brain-based understanding of mental health and wellness. I believe that healing begins when we allow ourselves to truly feel and process what’s beneath the surface. Taking that first step can feel overwhelming, but it’s often the most powerful move toward becoming more aligned with who you are and how you want to feel.

Search therapists by insurance

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by California rather than a city like LA?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across California from San Francisco to San Diego! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in California.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
