My name is Marisa. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor. I earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Rutgers University and a Master of Science Degree in Clinical Mental Health from Rutgers School of Biomedical Science. I provided individual counseling and case management to individuals diagnosed with mental health and substance abuse barriers. As a graduate student, I have launched community-wide outreach events to educate members of the community about Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. This work strengthened my commitment to become an advocate for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking. I am deeply committed to my work and this is demonstrated in my ability to connect with my clients. My goal as a clinician is to empower individuals and families while remaining receptive to feedback throughout the therapeutic process. I use a wide collective range of clinical modalities and interventions such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which assists in combating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Passionate that therapy must meet the individual’s needs, I believe that therapy and progress are not linear, and must be tailored to the individual. I have a deep passion, advanced education, and extensive field experience that have provided me with a dynamic set of interpersonal skills that cement my effectiveness as a competent clinician.
The start of something new can produce anxiety in anyone, not just in the therapeutic setting. For this reason I emphasize the importance of the therapeutic relationship. I align with my families and will often encourage them to share their questions about the process. Once the formalities and informed consents are reviewed we discuss the presenting reasons for therapy.
I specifically will not use one modality. I believe in using a multicultural approach. Which means , I ask a ton of questions. Ranging from your birth order, race, religion, socioeconomic status, profession. In addition, I am eager to learn about your generational influences, role models, and even more importantly how mental health was viewed in your culture and family dynamics. It is more valuable and effective to understand my families lives through their lens opposed to applying a modality and a one size fits all intervention.
I would have to say my transparency and authenticity. I think being humble and self- aware assist me in developing my skill set. My empathy and intuitiveness are my key strengths.
