Welcome, and come as you are. I believe that meaningful change begins with understanding yourself on a deeper level. Many of the struggles we experience in adulthood, whether in relationships, self-worth, anxiety, trauma, communication, or life satisfaction, are shaped by patterns that developed long before we were aware of them. My role is to help you identify those patterns, understand why they exist, and create lasting change rather than simply managing symptoms.

Greetings! I am a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) and have worked with offenders, anger management clients, couples, teens and adults struggling with ADHD, anxiety and depression. Through a strengths based approach, my clients learn more about themselves thus improving self-confidence, communication, mood and overall outlook on life. I love serving my teen and couples clients via the Gallup strengths test. This test helps individuals understand where their energy is highest and what they value most. It's not about "strengths", but values. I believe one of the best things we can do for ourselves is take the time to truly understand ourselves as this helps us learn to communicate effectively, be productive, overcome procrastination and more. This is one tool of many I enjoy using to help my clients.

Therapy can be challenging due to life itself, and meaningful change rarely occurs overnight. Throughout my work as a therapist, I have found the best outcomes come when clients approach the process with openness, humility, and a willingness to engage in self-reflection and growth. I do not believe in a "one-size-fits-all" approach to therapy; instead, I tailor treatment to each individual's unique needs, goals, and experiences. My role is to support and guide clients through their journey, recognizing that therapy is ultimately what you make of it. Lasting change comes through consistent effort, collaboration, and trust in the process.

I have also been an ordained Lutheran pastor since 1989. My professional career began as an Associate Pastor in a Lutheran church in northwest Ohio, where I focused on youth ministry, Christian Education, and pastoral counseling. Throughout my counseling career, I have maintained activity in ministry. I was trained in Clinical Pastoral Counseling and also have had training as a Spiritual Director. My counseling approach is generally non-directive, using a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing in a Solution Focused, Client Centered frame work. I can incorporate spirituality as much or as little as the client desires, from not referencing spirituality at all to fully engaging the spiritual dimension of life. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for ten years now. You will always know yourself better than I can or will. From a philosophical and theoretical standpoint. I am overwhelming more of an attachment theorist, and have been known to use existentialism from time to time to help make sense of something. I guess the question that remains though is; can a butterfly flap it's wings in Brazil and cause a tornado in Kentucky, or are we all simply just products of our childhood and mirrors of our parents traumas? The duality of life. Attachment Theory vs. Chaos Theory. Both have value. I digress. My goal is to provide a petridish in which you can explore your self. Safe. Contained. Yet completely in your control. The paradox being, you likely already have what you need. I'll sit with you while you find it. I can give you my clinical opinion, or diagnosis, and recommendations along the way as well if you'd like that. I can just sit and listen. I can play devils advocate. My job is to listen, empower, observe, and provide feedback when requested.

My clients have laughed, cried, practiced new things, and worked very, very hard. The only thing I ask, as a therapist, is to have hope and do the work. Each client is a functioning part of a larger whole that wants to stay the same. I see no sense in blaming a person for situations they did not create; it's what each person does that counts.

Veterans and adults facing life altering internal struggles.... you're here to find solutions. You’re here because something in your life feels heavy, confusing, or out of control and you’re ready for things to change. Whether it’s trauma, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, poor anger skills, stress, overthinking, low confidence, or a mix of all of them, you don’t have to keep carrying this burden alone. These issues are common, but they’re also beatable when you have the right support and a clear plan forward. I’ve worked with thousands of clients who felt stuck in self‑defeating beliefs, guilt, shame, or old patterns that drained the joy out of life. What I’ve learned is simple: when you reconnect with Hope, Purpose, and the strengths you’ve forgotten you have, things start to shift fast. You’re not broken; you’re overwhelmed. And overwhelmed people need support, not judgment. I’m here to listen without judgment, help you make sense of what you’re facing, and guide you toward healthier perspectives that actually work in real life. I’m Christian‑friendly for clients who want it, and fully comfortable with secular therapy for those who don’t. My job is to meet you where you are, not push you into a box. I’m also a huge Ohio State Buckeyes fan. I’ll gladly work with Michigan fans too… but I can’t promise the same level of nonjudgmental neutrality I offer everyone else. :) And if you’re into grilling, I might even share a few Blackstone secrets along the way. Therapy doesn’t have to feel stiff — we can be real humans in the room together.

Are you grinding through days feeling down, empty, burned out, or like you just can’t keep doing this? Do you feel a heaviness inside that keeps coming back and makes everything harder? Are you so used to bottling up your emotions that you can hardly remember a time when you didn’t just keep everything inside? You might believe deep down that you are broken, that it’s your fault you feel this way, and you will always need to hide who you really are and what you really feel from others. Or maybe life or a relationship has just gotten really hard lately, and you don’t know where to go from here.

Life is full of change, and sometimes those changes can feel overwhelming. Hi, I’m Rob. I hail from Steubenville, Ohio. Let’s jump right in. Life is hard- we all need a little help and support on the journey. I see myself as walking beside the people with whom I work. Some need to look into the past and process it, receiving a different perspective on it. Some have a specific goal in mind like decreasing anxiety by learning new skills in a short period of time. Others need a listening ear, with some insights sprinkled in. Others still, benefit from clarity and analysis. What do you need? I believe the interpersonal connection between counselor and client can be healing in and of itself. People are ones that hurt us, we're also the ones that heal each other.

These include substance abuse and dependency, Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder, anxiety, depression, and trauma as well as major life events that happen to us all. Person centered counseling is not a platform on which one seeks advice or fears being judged, as if “under the microscope”. I'm Jay Varela, a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in TEAM-CBT — a structured, evidence-based method developed by Dr. David Burns at Stanford. I hold Level 3 Advanced certification from the Feeling Good Institute and train regularly with the Beck Institute. Most therapy is open-ended. Mine isn't. I track your symptoms with the Burns Brief Mood Survey before and after every session, so you always know whether therapy is working — and so do I. The data tells us when to keep going, when to change course, and when you're done. Most clients see significant improvement in 4-6 sessions. OCD typically takes 8-12. I treat anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, and relationship problems.

I became a therapist because therapy changed my life. Experiencing mental illness caused struggle and emotional suffering, but lead me to seek help. The support I found brought solace and healing, and eventually opened doors that led to becoming a therapist. It is such a meaningful experience to reach those who are now where I once was. Over the years I had opportunities to work in many settings, including medical and mental health hospitals, intensive outpatient, and residential addiction treatment centers, and now private practice.

I bring a broad and versatile clinical background shaped by work across medical, educational, correctional, community, and crisis‑response settings. My experience includes providing therapeutic support, behavioral assessment, and case management to individuals across the lifespan and across diverse levels of care. I have worked in skilled nursing facilities, offering mental health support to older adults, addressing adjustment, grief, cognitive changes, and emotional well‑being. My background in inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment includes facilitating groups, conducting assessments, supporting recovery planning, and helping clients build coping strategies for substance use and co‑occurring mental health concerns. In correctional settings, I have administered assessments, evaluated behavioral functioning, and supported individuals on probation and parole. This work has strengthened my ability to navigate high‑risk environments, provide trauma‑informed care, and collaborate with multidisciplinary justice‑system teams. My crisis‑focused experience includes MRSS (Mobile Response and Stabilization Services) and other crisis counseling roles, where I provided rapid assessment, safety planning, de‑escalation, and short‑term stabilization for individuals and families experiencing acute emotional or behavioral crises. I have also served in elementary, middle, high school, and college settings, supporting students with emotional regulation, academic stress, behavioral concerns, identity development, and social challenges. My work in educational environments emphasizes developmentally appropriate interventions and skill‑building for long‑term resilience. I have supported clients through the Ryan White Program, providing mental health services to individuals living with HIV, addressing stigma, medical stress, trauma, and holistic wellness. My experience with FEMA emergency shelter operations includes offering crisis counseling, resource coordination, and emotional support to individuals and families displaced by emergencies or natural disasters. Across all settings, my approach is grounded in compassion, cultural humility, and evidence‑based practice. I am committed to helping clients navigate life challenges, build coping skills, and strengthen their emotional well‑being, regardless of their background or level of need.

Hello ! Welcome to the exploration of the benefits of therapy. This may be your first time trying out this experience, or you may have worked with other clinicians in the past. People often think of therapy as scary; a luxury; an unnecessary expense and/or use of time; no better than talking to friends and loved ones; to be sought out only if things get really BAD. But in the decades I have been working as a psychotherapist with people just like you - they have found, as I hope you will, that it is a dynamic opportunity to start addressing the needs of the most important resource you have - YOU ! And YES, starting with someone new is scary, and sometimes anxiety-producing. I applaud you for taking this step. Therapy is an educational process in which you are learning about you. I follow the pace of the client and can say that each person's journey to healing is different. I may have a compass to guide the process, but you are rowing the boat. There can be hard work on this exploration ! My experience as a therapist began in New York City, working in the field of domestic violence as a therapist and advocate. Living in New York City at that time, I had the opportunity and honor to work with people of various nationalities and cultures. I completed my Doctorate in Counseling Psychology at New Mexico State University in 2000. I worked for, and directed, several community- based , not for profit agencies before I took the plunge to start my own business in 2005. I was in private practice off an on for 20 years, and since that time I have worked as a contractor in many capacities, with diverse populations.

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, Men's Issues, is filtering therapists in Ohio that work with patients with similar concerns.

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
