As a provider, my greatest strengths lie in my deep empathy, active listening, and a commitment to mindful curiosity. I believe you are the expert on your own life, and I strive to create a safe, supportive space where your unique story can be truly heard and valued. Rather than simply diagnosing a problem, I listen for the 'hidden' stories of your strengths and values that often get overshadowed. My approach to active listening is about more than just understanding; it’s about standing alongside you to deconstruct the challenges you face and uncover the skills you already possess. Together, we will collaborate to rewrite the narratives that no longer serve you, fostering a therapeutic relationship built on trust, respect, and the reclamation of your personal agency.

Hi there, I’m Douglas. When anxiety, uncertainty, or burnout take over, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of your next step. It doesn’t have to stay that way. I work primarily with LGBTQ+ adults who appear confident on the outside but feel anxious, scattered, or self-critical underneath. Many are high-achieving professionals navigating ADHD, rumination, identity stress, or relationship challenges while trying to meet strong internal and external expectations. As a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Certified Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, and ADHD Clinical Services Provider, I bring both structure and depth to our work. Together, we’ll identify patterns that keep you stuck, regulate emotional reactivity, and build practical systems that support clarity and follow-through. Therapy with me blends insight with action—so change feels steady, grounded, and sustainable. Hello, my name is Steven Nelson, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over nine years of clinical experience. While my professional background includes family and relationship therapy, my current focus is working with individuals, helping each person navigate their unique journey toward healing, personal growth, and emotional well-being. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with people from diverse backgrounds and professions, including first responders, law enforcement personnel, active-duty military members and their families, nurses, attorneys, and many others facing a wide range of life challenges. Life's difficulties are a natural part of the human experience. At times, individuals may feel isolated in their struggles or believe that no one truly understands what they are going through. When left unaddressed, these difficulties can become overwhelming and interfere with one's ability to move forward. I believe that meaningful change is possible through a compassionate, collaborative, and evidence-based therapeutic approach. My goal is to provide a supportive and nonjudgmental environment where clients can gain insight, build effective coping skills, strengthen resilience, and develop healthier ways of managing life's challenges. Being a therapist is a lifelong passion for me and is rooted in my dedication to supporting adults, children, families, and communities in building safety, resilience, and hope. My journey has taken me from my home county of Santa Cruz where I advocated and ran groups for youth living in situations including domestic violence from 2011-2013, to working as a shelter counselor in Oakland for youth 13-21 from 2016-2018. I worked in serving famillies with San Francisco Child and Family Services, where I partnered with families navigating reunification with their children while providing psychoeducation and crisis counseling during critical moments from 2018-2022. I have been licensed with my LCSW since May 2025 and focused my prior professional development around harm reduction and culturally focused treatment, aligning with my commitment to social justice and culturally responsive care.

I feel very fortunate to have grown up in the Bay Area, but never truly appreciated it until I left and came back. I attended high school in Marin at the Branson School in Ross. After High School I left for Wheaton College in Massachusetts where I earned a B.A. in Psychology. I moved to Florida where I received my Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida. Prior to earning my Masters in Psychology I spent a number of years working in child and adolescent residential treatment centers in both San Francisco and Orlando, Florida. It was at this time that I fell in love with working with adolescents, adults, and their families. After graduate school, I found myself working for, and soon thereafter managing, an inpatient treatment program for adolescents who had experienced severe trauma. I returned to California for good in 2011 where I started working as the Lead Therapist for the Adolescent Outpatient Program at Fremont Hospital. I opened a part time private practice in 2012 and transitioned to a full time practice in San Francisco in early 2013.

You've tried therapy before but found that coping skills and worksheets aren't cutting it. I am a queer 2nd-gen Asian therapist taking a deeper approach. Together, we collect the pieces of your life story you've taken from past relationships and experiences and examine them, looking for new ways to write your own story. I also welcome discussion of issues like racism, homophobia, sexism, and how they affect us. My clients are able to make sense of their patterns and discover their own solutions through a space we craft with humor, compassion, and the occasional meme. By the end of therapy, my clients share feeling more at peace with themselves and more confident in managing their relationships. Most of my experience has been with children and teens at Kaiser Permanente over the last 6 years, including the combination of depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, and conflictual family dynamics. I have also worked in research settings with folks experiencing psychosis and college-aged students. At present, I am providing crisis evaluations at a local non-profit in SF in addition to this practice. I see teens and adults through this practice.

I am invested in helping you recognize thinking and (in)action patterns that hold you back or help you flourish. You may gain clarity about attitudes and beliefs informing everyday behaviors. Building motivation and tapping into innate resilience is a major part of the healing journey. The focus can be on lowering stress, increasing safety and security in relationships, and developing healthy self-esteem. This involves exploring current coping and refining skills for various situations and settings. Over time and with practice, you may become more flexible and responsive. You may feel more readiness for new and harder challenges. A gentle exploration of trauma, which is all too often a major source for present distress, is part of the work.

I bring both professional knowledge and lived experience to my work as a therapist. Living with a Bipolar I diagnosis has given me firsthand insight into the challenges of navigating mental health systems, stigma, and the ways these experiences can affect identity, relationships, and everyday life. This perspective allows me to meet each client with empathy, genuine curiosity, and respect for the meaning they make of their experiences. I am a shamanic clinician, which has been largely shaped and inspired by experiences with what’s often referred to as mania or psychosis. Perception is central to my therapeutic approach. Our histories, emotions, environments, and nervous-system states can all influence what we notice, how we interpret events, and how we respond. By exploring these patterns without judgment, I help clients expand their awareness, consider new perspectives, and develop greater choice in how they relate to themselves and the world around them. My professional experience includes psychiatric residential treatment, addiction medicine, youth detention, and private practice. I integrate somatic and sensory-based approaches (including brainspotting, meditation, drumming, sound therapy, aromatherapy, guided visualization, and shamanic-inspired practices) to support emotional processing and nervous-system regulation. I also emphasize nature, nutrition, sleep hygiene, and other foundations of whole-person wellness. From Grow Therapy's Leadership: "Based on your exceptional client engagement and outstanding care, you’ve officially qualified as a 2026 Grow Therapy Thriver! 🎉 (roughly 700 out of 25,000+ providers) This recognition reflects the meaningful relationships you build with clients from the start and the trust you inspire through your work. Hi, I'm James. I believe therapy should ultimately help create meaningful change. What change looks like is different for everyone. Whether you're beginning therapy for the first time, returning after time away, or realizing that something in your life isn't working the way you'd like, I would be glad to explore that with you. As a Marriage and Family Therapist and Supervisor with 15 years of experience, I've had the privilege of working with people across a wide range of backgrounds, and levels of need. Much of my career has been spent serving and leading in community mental health, where I saw how our mental health can be shaped not only by our history, but by our families, communities, cultures, and the world around us. I am comfortable working with experiences that are often described as "high acuity," including significant trauma, depression, anxiety, and psychosis. I am equally interested in the quieter things that can make life harder than it needs to be, like the nagging doubts, persistent insecurities, difficult relationships, or old patterns that no longer serve you. Whatever brings you here, you don't need to have it figured out before we begin. My role is to listen, take your experiences seriously, and work alongside you to better understand what's happening and to facilitate change. I will honor your story and your pace while helping you move toward change that feels meaningful and authentic to you.

I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who works with individuals and couples navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship challenges, life transitions, and patterns that can leave them feeling stuck or disconnected. My style is warm, down-to-earth, compassionate, and collaborative. I listen deeply without judgment while also offering honest reflection, insight, and practical tools to help you create meaningful change. Many people come to therapy believing something is wrong with them. I approach things differently. I believe our emotional struggles, coping strategies, and relationship patterns often make much more sense when we understand the experiences that shaped them. Rather than simply focusing on symptoms, I help clients become curious about what is happening beneath the surface, why certain patterns developed, how they may have helped you cope or protect yourself, and whether they are still serving you today. Therapy with me is a place where you can show up as you are. You don’t need to have everything figured out, know exactly what to say, or pretend that everything is okay. Together, we’ll work toward greater self-understanding, reconnecting with your strengths, developing healthier ways of coping and relating, and creating changes that feel meaningful and sustainable in your life.

You’re an Asian-American professional who has achieved a great deal, yet you still feel unhappy. You may feel angry with the people you love most, anxious about what life may bring, disappointed when things don’t go your way, and frustrated with all of the above. You know there has to be more to life than simply getting through the day, but you haven’t been able to figure out what that is yet. As a second-generation Korean American therapist, I understand both personally and professionally how difficult it can be to grow up between cultures, navigate family expectations, and develop a stable sense of confidence and self-respect. My approach is warm, collaborative, and practical. I draw from CBT, psychodynamic therapy, supportive therapy, and mindfulness to help clients better understand themselves and develop the skills needed to create lasting, meaningful change.

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
