My journey to becoming a therapist started 29 years ago on a personal recovery journey, recovering from personal trauma and addiction in the entire system growing up including family, and coming from a low SES background, therapy became a way to reconcile the change I was going through in my life. Working with and helping others has always been a calling of mine, and becoming a therapist was a natural extension of that ongoing work on both myself and in my work with others. Beginning with a humanistic approach means meeting the client where they are at, and then conceptualizing the approach with a combination of humanistic and positive psychology, systems theory, and recovery-oriented systems of care.
My first session with you we are just starting to get to know one another. I think it's important in that first session to just get a sense of how we feel with one another, what does your gut tell you? Goal setting is flexible. You may start therapy with one particular goal, but as you unearth more and more about yourself you may discover that the original goal(s) you set out to achieve are not what will actually bring you the most happiness in your life. To that end, goals need to be permeable, adaptable, and evolving.
I would like to say that I try to take a more casual approach, "joining with you" means meeting you where you are at, not talking to you like a therapist, but talking with you. I think a therapist is really a facilitator of a journey you are already on, and can walk with you on that journey helping you discover some of those things about yourself that you cannot fully see yourself.
I work with a variety of clients, both male, female, and non-binary individuals and couples; ranging from late teens to people facing end-of-life existential issues. Work with trauma and addiction in particular lends to working with families and loved ones affected by such issues.
