Whatever challenge you face, you can overcome. This belief is core to my work, learned from a successful career in national and international development. Starting in 2017, I moved into individual and family counseling work to have a more direct impact on changing lives. As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), I use a combination of thought and actions based skills to help my clients identify, understand, and make change in their lives. A great deal of my work focuses on tapping into the "Authentic Self" - who I am underneath and who I want to become - which naturally lends well to work with adolescents and adults facing periods of upset and change in their lives.

Are you an adult who has been through a stressful experience? Do you continue to think about that experience, have nightmares about it, or feel as if you are reliving it day after day? Feeling worried, not being able to sleep, and reliving past experiences can be exhausting. If you are ready to regain control of your life, feel more present in the moment, and stop thinking about or reliving that past experience then you have come to the right place. Hi! I’m Sarah Theimer, a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional level 2 (CCTP-II) in Virginia. I am also a Christian and the proud wife of a first responder. I provide anxiety and trauma treatment, helping adults breakthrough the cycle of worry and trauma to live a more present and fulfilled life. To help you reach your goals, I use a two-fold approach by teaching you tools to help cope with everyday stressors and manage the intensity of emotions while exploring past experiences which have/are impacting the way you currently feel/behave. As a therapist, I strongly believe in exploring past hurts and experiences to help you better understand what led you to this point and assist in treating the root causes of the anxiety and trauma. I aim to keep sessions goal oriented and structured to assist individuals in meeting their goals. I earned my master’s degree from Lynchburg College in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I have eight years of experience in the mental health field and have worked in settings to include substance use clinics, inpatient mental health settings, and corrections facilities throughout my time in the mental health field. I have training in and utilize evidence-based approaches to include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), cognitive processing therapy (CPT), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR).

Welcome. I will challenge you (with your permission), laugh with you and expect you to come with a goal and be willing to be actionable about whatever homework you decide to try. If you aren't prepared for a little challenge to your thinking, you aren't engaged in our counseling process. It's okay to be unsure, but not to believe anyone can make things better without your effort. Paying for someone to say you're right 100% of the time may feel good in the moment, but there is no growth in the comfort zone and no comfort in the growth zone.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Virginia rather than a city like Richmond?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Virginia from Norfolk to Roanoke! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Virginia.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on Veterans?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, Veterans, is filtering therapists in Virginia that work with patients with similar concerns.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
