I have always had the conscious goal of supporting others with being able to overcome their hardships and internal challenges that prevents them from being successful. I am a firm believer that in life we have all experienced some type of challenge that will impact our thoughts and emotions. For some people the challenge is more difficult than others and they will experience greater hardship and internal challenges that will send them on a spiral to the unknown. Being a therapist has always been a desire of mine to support others with understanding their thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behaviors associated with how they feel.

Hi, my name is Stephen As a Christian do you ever feel like you are letting God down, or like you are not being faithful enough because you have real-life problems? Problems In your relationship, emotionally, behaviorally, or even with substance abuse. Is it hard to be kind to yourself? I help individuals manage their anxiety, depression, or burnout by addressing the needs of your body, mind, and spirit using the bible. I integrate current counseling theories with sound biblical principles to help develop a stronger relationship with God, and a stronger you. Whether you are dealing with being overwhelmed, relationship issues, or cycles of anxiety and depression, I am here to help. Seeking therapy can seem scary and maybe even against some of the teachings you've learned in church, but you are making the right choice. You deserve a safe space to heal and grow. In our sessions together I will meet with you, and your spouse if you want, with compassion and evidence-based techniques while using biblical principles so you can overcome the hang-ups and habits holding you back. The research says that 1 in 4 people in the United States, at any given time, have mental health issues. This does not exclude the church. The average church in Virginia has 250 members attending on any given Sunday. That means that at least fifty people in your church service last Sunday are struggling with some type of mental illness or emotional problem. I work with churches to help them with ministering to the hurting, please let me help you.

I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing teletherapy to adults in Virginia. My work is grounded in compassion, respect, and curiosity. I approach therapy as a collaboration where we make space for what’s difficult, confusing, or painful while also noticing progress and moments of relief. Clients often describe our sessions as calm and genuine, with humor and honesty mixed in. I practice from a person-centered and humanistic framework, integrating CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and narrative work as needed. I’m agnostic and open to people of all faiths and worldviews. My focus is on helping you understand your experiences, manage distress, and find meaning that feels true to you. Therapy isn’t supposed to always feel good. It can be uncomfortable and tiring at times. My hope is that you leave each session with a little more clarity, support, and confidence in yourself.

I spent most of my career working in community mental health settings and have the breadth of varied experiences that entails. I'm familiar with the court and judicial system, the state mental hospital system, and worked alongside numerous other entities (DSS, FAPT, CSU, schools, courts, probation, pre-trial, CASA, drug and alcohol treatment centers, state health agencies, community services boards, healthcare providers, private acute facilities, and other BH healthcare entities). I was educated at Loyola University, New Orleans (BA in Psychology), later earning a Master's degree/Professional Counseling, in Central Virginia. I'm licensed in the State of Virginia and have worked with folks from all different age groups and walks of life. My career began working with children and families, which still holds a very special place in my heart.

Hi, I am a Licensed counselor practicing in Virginia. I graduated from Radford University with my Master of Science in Counseling Psychology in 1992, becoming licensed in 2002. Throughout my years of experience, the most important skill that I feel that I have been able to succeed in is listening to the individuals I work with. So often people do not feel heard, so it is important for people to not only feel heard but also that they are effectively communicating what they are feeling.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Virginia rather than a city like Richmond?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Virginia from Norfolk to Roanoke! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Virginia.

Will my therapist take Humana - Medicare?

Yes! If you use Humana - Medicare you’ll be asked to verify your Member ID at the time you book the appointment. However, if you don’t have Humana - Medicare you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
