Hello I am Laura Cahill! I am a passionate, energetic, and dedicated Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a love for the art of engagement in the work of therapy. Do you feel like your emotions have taken over and pushed you out of the driver's seat in life? In life, we often experience challenges, unexpected stress and transitions, trauma, hurt, grief and loss. Understandably, we may struggle with powerful emotions that seem to almost overtake us. Part of the human experience is wanting to feel in control of our inner and outer lives. And when our natural emotional responses to difficult experiences and circumstances threaten that sense of control, we may find ourselves fighting our feelings. It’s time to step back from the battle-not by retreating, but by re-framing. Our emotions and feelings are not our enemies, they are messengers. This is where our work begins. We will focus on how to hear those messages by learning the skills needed to hear, manage and interact with these feelings to help calm the turmoil that life has taken on, understand and recover from the past, and to be fully present to our current experiences. To have the opportunity to create a life that is built on your terms and not defined by what has happened to you. Entering into the world of therapy can feel overwhelming and a bit scary (well done making it this far). I applaud your bravery and commitment to your process of healing and recovery and I would be honored to have the opportunity to get to know you better and to be a part of this journey with you.

Hello and welcome! I'm happy that you are viewing my profile. It means that you recognize that no one should travel through life's challenges and difficulties alone. Therapy is a very positive step in working through issues and striving to become your best and happiest self. Human beings are seekers of connection and the relationship between the therapist and client can be a very powerful and healing one. I have been on both sides of this relationship and have seen the powerful changes in both my clients and myself. I consider it an honor and a privilege to have someone put their trust in me enough to be able to be their most vulnerable selves and share their innermost thoughts with me. This is something that takes time and I work hard to earn that trust. Let me tell you a little about my education and experience. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 30 years of diverse experience in the field of social work. I received my BSW from VCU in 1993 and my MSW from VCU in 2014. I have worked in various roles throughout my career to include at-risk youth , Intellectual Disabilities, Serious Mental Illness, Intensive Community Treatment, Crisis services, Substance Use Disorders, and as a licensed therapist working with adults, couples, and older adults dealing with depression, anxiety, life transitions, grief, relationship challenges, and self-esteem issues.

I started providing mental health services in the community in 2016 as a behavior technician. Once graduated I became a psychotherapy resident and later completed full psychotherapist licensure requirements with a specialty in marriage and family therapy. My therapeutic style is psychodynamic/psychoeducational, which means I help individuals understand the psychological underlying motivations for their behaviors impacting their mood shifts and precipitating symptoms and/or relational distress and impacts on our day to day activities. Relational distress is not confined to couples. Relational distress (mostly precipitated by depression and anxiety and as the cause of depression/anxiety in a never ending loop) includes connections in all existing contexts. Day to day actives impacted by mood shifts and symptoms of depression and anxiety can range from our daily personal hygiene routines to balancing (or rather neglecting to) a check book, to job performance, to dysregulation showing up in additive day to day behaviors (alcohol and drugs are not the only addition behaviors presenting as dysregulation). In my practice, I believe that therapy is a collaborative journey where the client and therapist work together. My work is grounded in mutual respect, empathy, unconditional regard, and trust. My goal is to provide a supportive and non-judgmental place where the individual can explore thoughts, feelings and stances impacting their interpersonal, intrapersonal, and day to day experiences with honesty and openness. To me, growth and change are deeply personal experiences and unique to each individual. A transformative process that unfolds carefully and mindfully over time. My role is to provide guidance and tools towards the path of healing and self discovery of insights and resilience as the individual, couple, or the family reach their desired goals.

I have always had the conscious goal of supporting others with being able to overcome their hardships and internal challenges that prevents them from being successful. I am a firm believer that in life we have all experienced some type of challenge that will impact our thoughts and emotions. For some people the challenge is more difficult than others and they will experience greater hardship and internal challenges that will send them on a spiral to the unknown. Being a therapist has always been a desire of mine to support others with understanding their thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behaviors associated with how they feel.

Welcome! The Ebbs and Flows of Life are something we all experience. We flow towards our hopes and dreams, while other times we may flow away. When your life ebbs it is like you are struggling against the current, and fighting your way through the current to grasp what is important to you. Perhaps the times you are flowing away are a result of relationship concerns, addiction, past trauma, anxiety or living with negativity. Like large rocks under the water, you may not be able to see them but they are creating obstacles in achieving your goals while potentially impacting both your health and well-being. I believe that by taking this step in seeking help you are interested in moving forward back to what is important to you. My role is to help you on your journey.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Virginia rather than a city like Richmond?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Virginia from Norfolk to Roanoke! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Virginia.

Will my therapist take Humana - Medicare?

Yes! If you use Humana - Medicare you’ll be asked to verify your Member ID at the time you book the appointment. However, if you don’t have Humana - Medicare you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
