I received my bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Montclair State University and my master of social work from New York University. I have been practicing therapy for over 12 years and an additional three years in other realms of the helping profession. I have experience in a residential setting as well as various counseling centers & a private group practice. I spent numerous years working with trauma, as well as school-based health centers. I have specialized experience working with depression, anxiety, stress, relational and family conflict, and abuse.
In our first session together, I will get to know you, explore what has brought you into counseling, and also cover some background information that will help me get a full understanding of what impacts you both positively and negatively.
I incorporate many modalities and interventions into my practice but tend to operate from a systems perspective. I utilize Structural & Systemic Family Therapy as well as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Solution-Focused interventions. I also incorporate Mindfulness and Relaxation techniques to help clients add to their coping toolbox. I tend to be very down to earth and empathetic, I love to highlight strengths and help my clients on their road to healing!
I believe my experiences have shaped and provided me with a well-rounded skill set that has helped me in therapeutic practice. I work with children, adolescents, and adults. I love helping folks who are struggling with symptoms of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and can use enhanced coping skills!
Keyla Silva-Byrd offers therapy covered by Kaiser Permanente - Medicaid and UnitedHealthcare/Optum - Medicaid in Virginia.
A lot of my interventions incorporate the CBT model which really is about the interconnection between thoughts, feelings, and behavior. This type of therapy can be really helpful for symptoms of anxiety and depression.
I utilize active and reflective listening skills and engagement to offer a supportive stance to my client.
I like to incorporate mindfulness based concepts into my sessions as it is a proven strategy to help with many symptoms including anxiety, depression, and stress relief.
I tend to operate from a structural/systemic family therapy lens, although I may not always incorporate direct interventions around this-it does influence my interventions.
I operate from a strength's based and empowerment perspective as much as possible with all my clients.
