Hello, I'm Melissa. Are you looking for a therapist who understands the challenges of raising a family in today's fast paced and stressful world? Do you find it difficult to feel comfortable talking to others about your real feelings because you don't want to be that vulnerable to anyone else? I help individuals struggling with life balance and stress management. I have experience providing individual therapy to clients struggling with current life stressors due to past traumas. These past traumas can hold one back from moving forward in life and finding happiness. I have experience working with diverse client populations. I have worked with children and adolescents in the Dept. of Child Services system, provided behavior support to individuals with developmental disabilities and have worked inpatient with children with dual diagnoses. I am also a single mother of two amazing children and understand on a personal level the stress of raising children, managing the house and maintaining a career. I enjoy listening to others and helping them find the strengths they did not know they had. Life can be tough at times but having someone to talk through problems with can make the difficult times easier.

With three years of experience in private practice, I have cultivated a deep passion for helping others find fulfillment and peace amidst adversity. Prior to my practice, I gained extensive experience in community mental health settings and served as a clinical support supervisor in an inpatient women’s rehabilitation facility. When not engaged in my professional pursuits, I enjoy spending time with my children, our blue heeler, Lilly, reading, running, and embarking on adventures with friends and family. I firmly believe that the cornerstone of a fulfilling life lies in cultivating a sense of contentment that allows individuals to cope effectively with life’s obstacles.

Stop. Unclench your jaw. Relax your shoulders. Breath. My practice has been focused on decreasing the effects of trauma, depression, and anxiety in both adults and children through a mind and body approach. While working with children and adults there is a focus on the present while relieving symptoms caused by the past. Therapy is a relationship between a provider and client that supports positive change. I have witnessed these changes while working with each of my clients and as a client myself. I truly believe that I can help you and/or your children improve your mood and decrease negative behaviors.

So, here we are. Life’s a bit of a mess, isn’t it? Maybe it feels like you’re starring in a horror movie, except no one handed you the script. I’m Kandace Barkham, and I help people like you. Those who are over the empty platitudes and ready for real change. I have an LCSW/LCADC. I hold a BSW and an MSSW from the Kent School. If you’re looking for a therapist who’s going to sit back, nod silently, and sprinkle some feel-good phrases your way… well, that’s not me. I’m here to help you actually get unstuck, and yes, we might even laugh at the absurdity of it all along the way. Let’s cut through the nonsense: trauma, addiction, mental health issues. they suck. But you know what sucks more? Pretending like everything’s fine and letting them control your life. Together, we’ll work through the heavy stuff. We’ll get into the mess, sort it out, and figure out how you can finally breathe a little easier. Therapy with me isn’t some endless loop of “and how does that make you feel?” It’s a collaborative process where I bring my expertise to the table, and you bring your courage to face what’s been holding you back.

When life becomes challenging, when self-care is slipping away, or when stress and struggles seem overwhelming or paralyzing, I want you to know that you are not alone. You are stronger than you realize. You can discover (or rediscover) your “authentic self” even when it seems impossible or unsurmountable. I am here to help. Together, we can assess what your authentic needs are and how to achieve them in mind, body, emotions, spirit and action. I’m here to guide, educate, and empower you. My treatment approach is one of curiosity and compassion so that during our sessions, you are free to slow down and safely practice mindfulness and self-care. Together, we will decide which types of interventions work best for you: talk therapy, faith-based, practical problem-solving, trauma-informed care, or creative techniques like art or narrative approaches. We will explore your inner thought-life through mindfulness and cognitive work. We will identify skills, strengths, and supports that can grow through patient practice between sessions. With evidence-based techniques, we will find and navigate paths so you can reclaim joy and walk in peace. I am privileged to walk alongside you during your journey. Peace and hope are possible and sustainable. You deserve to take care of yourself. You will be stronger on the other side.
