Hello and welcome! My name is Donna Hickman, and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the south Florida area. I have a master's degree in Counseling and a PhD in Counselor Education & Supervision from Texas A&M University-Commerce. I have 16 years of experience as a therapist and truly love the work that I do. I love working with adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, and life transitions.
In our first session, we’ll focus on creating a safe and supportive space where you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and concerns. I’ll take time to get to know you, understand what brought you to therapy, and explore your goals and hopes for our work together. This session is an opportunity for us to build trust, clarify your needs, and answer any questions you have about the therapy process. It’s normal to feel nervous or unsure, and I’ll meet you with compassion and understanding, ensuring the pace feels right for you.
My greatest strengths as a provider lie in my ability to create a trusting, safe, and nonjudgmental space for clients. I take a holistic approach to care, considering the unique physical, emotional, and social factors that shape each person’s journey. My clients often tell me they appreciate my warmth, empathy, and ability to meet them where they are, as well as my dedication to empowering them to achieve their goals and cultivate meaningful change in their lives.
I specialize in working with adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, and life transitions. I work from a trauma-informed, person-centered perspective, which means that your feelings, thoughts, and experiences will be the focus of our sessions. My role is to create a space where you feel validated, accepted, and understood. Together, we’ll work to identify your concerns and develop practical tools and strategies to help you work through them.
The person-centered approach is all about putting you at the heart of the therapy process. It’s based on the belief that you are the expert on your own life and that you have the inner resources and wisdom to grow, heal, and create positive change. My role as your therapist is to provide a safe, nonjudgmental, and supportive environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings openly. In our sessions, I’ll focus on deeply understanding your perspective and experiences. I’ll listen with empathy, accepting you as you are without judgment, and offer unconditional positive regard. This means you’ll have a space where you can feel heard, valued, and respected for who you are, no matter what challenges you may be facing. This approach also emphasizes personal growth and self-empowerment. Together, we’ll work to uncover and address any barriers that might be holding you back, helping you move toward a life that feels more authentic and fulfilling. It’s not about me telling you what to do or giving you solutions—it’s about collaborating to help you find your own path and trust yourself to navigate life’s challenges.
