Hello! Does it seem overwhelming to be searching for a therapist? I get it! Please allow me to introduce myself to you. My name is Sonja (rhymes with "lasagna"). I enjoyed working with children and their families for 15 years, and then I transitioned to the medical field, where I was blessed to continue my growth within a variety of settings. My husband and I have one spoiled dog, Bo, a boxer-hound mix, who brings lots of laughs to our home. My specialties include working with adults (age 18+). I can help people who are dealing with symptoms of anxiety and/or depression find ways to cope. Those who are struggling with adoption issues may need extra support and assistance as they sort through their feelings. Caregivers who are feeling overwhelmed with life can find a peaceful place to land during our sessions. I particularly enjoy providing Christian-based counseling, as that is an important part of who I am. I believe that laughing about life with my patients can help us explore together what may be on their hearts and minds. NOTE: I can offer in-person sessions on a very limited basis in an office in Orange Park, FL, but I am primarily utilizing the telehealth format. You must be in a setting that is private and has stable internet for our telehealth sessions.

I received my MA in Mental Health Counseling from the University of South Florida. I have five years' experience, which consists of counseling adolescents at a runaway shelter and counseling the adult through Geriatrics population at a Community Mental Health Center.

I specialize in helping you identify and overcome issues that hinder your day-to-day enjoyment of life and/or interfere with progress towards goals you have set. In over thirty years of private practice counseling I have learned to meet clients’ needs not only with continued education and research but also through a multitude of life experiences. I enjoy working with a diverse range of clients and have found that humor when utilized in an appropriate way and time can be very beneficial. I believe trust is a fundamental element in any relationship. This trust has to be developed and nurtured to remain genuine. Through trust other aspects important to the relationship can prosper such as comfort in being open, sincerity, and a willingness to change. I am a life-long Texan, however, I have traveled extensively and embraced many different cultures and location specific issues. Through all of life’s changes I have learned that, even with the best of plans, things still do not always work out the way we would like. This has also allowed me to acquire an understanding of what clients may be going through even if I have not experienced the exact situation. Through any adversity there is no reason to feel alone.

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist and have spent many years working with the troubled, depressed, and mentally ill, especially focusing on couples and families. I work with individuals from ages 12 to adulthood, as well as just about all ethnicities, and cultures. I believe there is a strong correlation between mind, spirit, and body, and I therefore incorporate my experience and knowledge within my therapy, using a variety of therapies including, Client Centered, Family Systems, as Behavioral therapies.
