I am a Christian therapist who feels that every adult person's spiritual beliefs are a strong factor for emotional healing. I am convinced that a life of hope, faith, and peace of mind awaits you. I want to help guide you to develop a clean pattern of life, a clean conscience, and self-confidence, which will remove the shadow of fear and guilt that seems to be hanging over you. Let me help you and together we will work on your development of the skills, for the successful and rewarding life that you have always desired. I received my MA in Mental Health Counseling from the University of South Florida. I have five years' experience. I’ve been practicing as a licensed psychologist for more than 25 years, primarily utilizing cognitive behavioral therapy as an effective tool to treat anxiety and depression. As these can be emotionally debilitating conditions, addressing these issues can improve one’s sense of well-being, and thus their lives, dramatically. I have also more recently incorporated spirituality into my treatment regimen, thus addressing that aspect of one's personality in relation to their recovery from depression and/or anxiety.

Welcome! I provide individual therapy to adults dealing with a variety of challenges including: anxiety, self-esteem, life transitions/adjustment issues, complex trauma, and attachment issues. Whether this is your first time seeking therapy or you have been in therapy before, it is important to choose a therapist that you feel connected to and has experience in treating the areas that align with your needs. Therapy is an intimate experience, a collaboration between you and the therapist. I take that role seriously and understand that to do my best work, I need to understand each client holistically. I feel like my biggest asset is the ability to see a client's strengths, empower them to achieve their goals, and support them throughout the therapeutic process. Therapy helps uncover strengths and learn new skills that will allow you to deal with the challenges that arise in life. A successful therapy experience does not mean a person is cured, it means the person has the inner and outer resources to deal with the ups and downs of life. My goal is to help you develop the skills necessary to successfully deal with life, on your own terms. With warmth, compassion, and a bit of humor, I aim to create a safe, supportive environment to help foster personal growth and healing. I have experience working in a variety of settings including outpatient, Telehealth therapy , and schools. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and approved Clinical Supervisor. I look forward to working with you!

My name is Mary Vaughan and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor for the state of Florida. I have been in the mental health business for 35+ years. I love my work and that is the reason have stayed in it as long as I have. I am a military brat and I have moved around in Europe and many states. Before I begin to work with a client, I tell them some of my background. It is my opinion the client should know something about his/her counselor before we begin our work. I have had very successful results working with people who suffer from some kind of abuse ( either in childhood or as a young adult.) If abuse has occurred at most any age, the individual may come to me and tell me that they are experincing stress, depression, anxiety and/or panic attacks. Before beginning counseling, I inform the client that we will have a questioning and answer process. This allows the client and me to get to know each other a little better. Based on the information I gather about my client, we discuss what the client wants from their sessions. The individual and I work together as a team. In this process, the client gains a sense of self-esteem and a sense of control over their lives going forward in the future. Finding the right "fit" of counselor and client is key to a successful experience for the client. After the counselor gives the client some unique coping skills, the counselor asks the client if these skills might work for them. These coping skills are "Fluid" and can be modified and changed as we proceed in the counseling process.

Do you struggle with self-esteem, controlling your thoughts, organizing your life, managing your emotions and/or interpersonal relationships? Would you like to resolve some issues from your past and learn how to begin to enjoy the present as you also shape your future with intention and excitement? I will be here to guide you on your therapeutic journey and explore the 'menu' of approaches to choose from when we meet. It will be a safe place to talk, laugh and cry. Consider it a "choose your own adventure" approach with also a bit of structure. My therapeutic focus is finding a balance with one’s mind, body and spirit to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, ADHD, burnout, trauma, physical manifestations and changes in moods which often stem from repressed thoughts and unprocessed emotions. Letting your words "hit the air" is profoundly powerful and the first step to change.... actually, second after deciding to work on yourself. :) My healing modalities are deeply rooted person-centered, talk-therapy approach incorporating traditional therapeutic methods and holistic practices such as breath-work and mindfulness. Reaching out can be intimidating, especially when scrolling through a list of strangers and trying to choose who you think might be a good fit to be open and vulnerable with. It is a big decision. Let's start with a 15 min consultation, if you'd prefer. You decide if we're a match. No pressure to commit. Consider it like trying on a great pair of shoes for your journey. :)

Throughout my career as a therapist, I continue to learn and grow, drawing from the vast knowledge available in the field. I am deeply committed to helping my clients embrace their true selves, regardless of their personality traits—whether they are humorous, quiet and shy, hesitant to trust, or feeling frustrated with the world. Some of my priorities are to assist clients that are grieving a loss triggered by death, the end of a relationship, a serious medical diagnosis or other major life changes. My goal is to accompany you on your journey providing you with much needed support as you find ways to identify and cope with your loss, finding peace and meaning in your life.

I truly believe that there are distinct patterns to much of our behavior and our thinking. Some of these patterns may have developed over many years as defense mechanisms or coping skills. Many others are learned from our environments. Regardless, we often don't even realize what these patterns are, or how they are playing out in our lives, because they are so ingrained within us. As a therapist, I like to help you identify and deconstruct these patterns to find out which ones are benefitting you and which ones are creating barriers to your goals. Once we know how we "tick," we can figure out ways to create new, healthier patterns for our lives. I studied at the University of Florida in Gainesville where I earned both a Masters and Specialist degrees in Mental Health Counseling. I also trained at the Gestalt Center of Gainesville during my graduate studies. Additionally, I am a Registered Nurse in Emergency/Critical Care services.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Florida rather than a city like Tampa?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Florida from Miami to Jacksonville! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Florida.

Will my therapist take UnitedHealthcare Shared Services?

Yes! If you use UnitedHealthcare Shared Services you’ll be asked to verify your Member ID at the time you book the appointment. However, if you don’t have UnitedHealthcare Shared Services you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
