I’m Christopher McDonald, a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor with extensive experience supporting adults, young adults, and veterans. As an Air Force Reservist, I understand firsthand the unique challenges that military life can bring, including transitions, stress, and service-related trauma. My work spans college counseling, addiction recovery, and community mental health, which allows me to meet clients where they are and provide guidance tailored to their needs. I am passionate about helping individuals navigate life’s difficulties and uncover the strengths they already possess. Whether someone is facing anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, or significant life transitions, I offer a compassionate, judgment-free space where your story matters and your goals guide the work we do together. I believe therapy is most effective when it is collaborative, so I partner with clients to build practical coping skills, increase self-awareness, and develop resilience that lasts beyond our sessions. My approach integrates evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and I also incorporate faith-based guidance when requested. I seek wisdom from my Christian faith and, with consent, sometimes include prayer in sessions to support clients in connecting with their spirituality. Ultimately, my goal is to empower you to make confident decisions, manage stress effectively, and grow into your best self. I take pride in creating a space where clients feel heard, supported, and equipped to face challenges with strength and clarity. Together, we will work toward meaningful, lasting change in your mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, we’ll take the time to explore your story, current challenges, and personal goals. I focus on understanding not just the symptoms you are experiencing, but also the underlying factors contributing to your difficulties. Together, we will clarify what you hope to achieve through therapy, discuss your strengths and coping strategies, and outline a plan tailored to your unique needs. You’ll leave the session with practical tools, initial insights, and a sense of direction for the next steps. I create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where you can feel heard, understood, and empowered to begin making meaningful, lasting change in your life.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I bring eight years of diverse clinical experience across college counseling, addiction recovery, and community mental health, allowing me to meet clients where they are and guide them through a variety of challenges. I am a Certified Dialectical Behavior Therapist and integrate evidence-based approaches such as CBT, DBT, as well as faith-informed counseling when appropriate. My greatest strengths lie in creating a collaborative, client-centered environment, tailoring interventions to each individual’s goals, and equipping clients with practical skills to manage emotions, overcome obstacles, and build resilience. I am committed to helping clients gain confidence, develop long-term coping strategies, and achieve meaningful personal growth in mental, emotional, and relational areas of life.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I am best positioned to serve adults, young adults, and veterans who are seeking guidance, support, and growth during life transitions or in the face of mental health challenges. My ideal clients may be experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, stress related to work or school, addiction recovery, relationship difficulties, or challenges associated with reintegration from probation, parole, or military service. I also work with clients navigating academic stress, career decisions, or personal development goals. The clients I work best with are motivated to improve their lives, open to exploring both evidence-based and faith-informed strategies, and willing to actively participate in the therapeutic process. They are looking for a safe, judgment-free space where they can share their story, feel understood, and gain practical tools to manage emotions, thoughts, and behaviors more effectively. My clients often desire to build resilience, improve self-awareness, strengthen coping skills, and make confident, informed decisions that align with their values and long-term goals. I tailor therapy to meet the unique needs of each individual, integrating techniques from CBT, DBT, and Christian counseling when appropriate. My clients value a collaborative, personalized approach that emphasizes both personal growth and tangible progress. Whether someone is seeking support for immediate stressors, long-standing patterns, or complex trauma, I provide guidance that helps them gain clarity, develop emotional regulation skills, and create sustainable change in their lives. Ultimately, my ideal clients are individuals who are ready to take an active role in their healing and growth, who want to understand themselves more deeply, and who are committed to building a life of resilience, purpose, and meaningful connection. Together, we work toward achieving measurable goals, overcoming barriers, and fostering lasting transformation in every area of life.

My treatment methods

Christian Counseling

As a Christian counselor, my approach is rooted in faith and guided by biblical principles. I seek the Lord for wisdom and direction in my work and strive to integrate spiritual insight with evidence-based clinical practices. When appropriate and with client consent, I may include prayer in sessions and encourage clients to draw strength, hope, and clarity from their relationship with God while also addressing emotional, psychological, and relational needs in a clinically sound way.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have several years of training and experience using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy beginning with my work as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor. I use CBT to help clients identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, and build practical skills for managing emotions, behaviors, and stress. My approach is structured, goal-oriented, and focused on creating lasting, real-world change.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I am certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and use DBT-informed interventions based on each client’s specific needs and goals. I integrate core DBT components such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness to help clients build practical skills for managing intense emotions, improving relationships, and increasing overall stability and resilience.

Eclectic

I use an eclectic approach that draws from multiple therapeutic modalities to best meet each client’s unique needs, goals, and strengths. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all model, I integrate techniques from approaches such as CBT, DBT, and other evidence-based methods to create a flexible, personalized treatment plan that supports meaningful and sustainable growth.
