Hello, I'm a Clinical Psychologist and Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Jacksonville, FL. I have been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida since 2012. I have been working with adult clients who are dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, compassion fatigue, and burnout. My goal is to help my clients make positive changes and feel better about themselves that leads to a more fulfilling life for them.
I would describe our first session together as getting to know you personally and identifying the origins of the stressors and their current impact on you, the client. The creation of the therapeutic relationship is highly important because it lays the foundation for future sessions. The first session will also identify a plan of action of how to reduce or alleviate the current stressor.
Being an EMDR practitioner, I have seen the rapid reduction of client's symptoms when using Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy during sessions. EMDR is tailored to identifying past stressors or trauma events that are continuing to operate in the present. Being a mental health provider for over 10 years, I have certain life experiences that help me better relate to my clients, in addition to enjoying seeing clients get better and have more fulfilling lives.
I work with a variety of clients who are in different stages of their lives, with some being college students to older adults. While each client brings to therapy a unique issue, all my clients are having difficulty understanding how to work through their issues. Their issues are like puzzle pieces, and they are having trouble seeing how the pieces fit together. I like to think of therapy as a way for clients to come in and work with a professional who will help them re-arrange the puzzle pieces that will lead to solutions.
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is an empirically based treatment method for trauma related events, PTSD, phobias, depression, and anxiety. Clients who come to therapy typically have past trauma issues from their childhood and/or adult years. The trauma related events create negative belief systems that the client endorses, that leads to maladaptive coping strategies which is causing distress in the client's current life, resulting in increased anxiety and depression. EMDR seeks to address the trauma related event and through a process of bilateral stimulation involving tracking of the therapist’s hand movements. Bilateral stimulation reduces the emotional distress of the trauma event. When the client's anxiety level is significantly reduced, the insertion of a positive belief system is inserted that leads to the creation of new adaptive thinking. The client can look at the trauma event from an objective perspective as the negative emotion from the trauma event has been removed. This also leads to a significant reduction in anxiety and depression and helps the client to adopt more positive coping methods. I want to create a safe therapeutic environment for my clients in which they can share their trauma related events. When clients feel safe, and a solid collaborative relationship has been established, then I work with clients teaching them about EMDR. When the client is ready, then EMDR processing can begin. Every client that I work with is unique and some clients need more time to begin exploring their trauma events than other clients.
