Welcome to your therapy journey! I am Karen Poindexter, and I earned my master's degree in social work from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. I believe that each person is unique and has a story, yet often barriers in life have impacted the ability to tell the story. I utilize a strength-based perspective and view counseling as my calling to assist individuals with regaining balance in their lives. I incorporate Christianity and faith-based principles into counseling. The ability to guide someone on the path of decreasing depression, anxiety, conflict or merely not feeling heard, is an honor that I do not take likely. Sometimes it can feel uncertain, scary even, to take the step to begin therapy. However, you are so worth it, and I look forward to connecting with you soon.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

During our initial session, after we form our introductions, I will inquire as to the reasons that you are seeking therapy, as well as explore if therapy has been utilized previously and whether it was effective. I have found that that shapes the fact that your experience in our session will be a new beginning. Together, we will discuss the issues that are brining you to counseling as well as the goals that you desire to receive.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

As I have more than two decades of experience as a therapist, I have learned that what a person wants and deserves most is the ability to be heard, in a safe, nonjudgmental environment.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I believe in assisting individuals with exploring the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. and to develop strategies to modify behavior. Often past experiences as well as current life circumstances may result in symptoms of anxiety and difficulty functioning.

Couples Counseling

I have had expensive experience assisting individuals in relationships, ranging from dating, pre-marital, and marriage to explore the barriers and dynamics that may be interfering with growth such as effective communication, regaining trust and examining mutual goals.

Christian Counseling

Often a client requests the addition of Christianity with traditional therapy modalities. I have found that considerable progress can occur when a faith-based approach is used, including concepts such as prayer. connecting with the client church of choice or other religious activities in the community.

Family Therapy

An individual is a product of the family of origin or the family in which one currently resides. Often unresolved issues, traumas and losses can be connected to the family of origin and may impact the current level of functioning in the current family dynamic. It is rewarding to assist families with learning the impact that each individual has on the other, the difference and similarities in patterns and communication, as well as backgrounds are definitely worth exploring.

Grief Therapy

Love and loss are a natural part of live; yet both concepts can be challenging to navigate. I have extensive experience in the areas of loss, grief, bereavement and prolonged grief. Such includes anticipatory grief as well as sudden losses such as miscarriages and pregnancy loss.
