My name is Robert (Bob) Kaiser and I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), National Certified Counselor (NCC), and a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) in Michigan. You can take a look at my profile to learn a little bit more about my background and approach. Please also feel free to ask questions. Online counseling is fairly new, and I've found it to be really effective for issues like the ones you mentioned in your message. My counseling style is pretty laid back. I have been described as supportive, caring, and compassionate, with a pretty good sense of humor. I like to focus on identifying your strengths and helping you to maximize them to overcome your obstacles. I'm here to help you sort through the things that are difficult right now, and offer you a safe place to be open and honest without fear of judgment. Therapy offers a safe place to explore your thoughts and feelings. Asking for help takes a lot of courage but can be extremely rewarding. I look forward to working with you.

As an individual who struggled with alcohol addiction, depression, and anxiety, my life experiences, as well as my education and faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of my life, have provided me with the opportunity to serve those who are struggling with life. Everyone has life struggles. I am prepared to help individuals and couples learn how to live life amidst struggles, such as depression, addiction, worry, financial stress, or marriage difficulties. I am blessed and honored to be in a position to use the gifts God has entrusted me with to serve others. My specialty area is addictions. I struggled with alcohol addiction for about 23 years. Through God's redeeming grace and an excellent education, I am well equipped to help those struggling with addiction and the anxiety, depression, worry, and fear that may or may not be attached to the addiction. My life experience with addiction has equipped me with an understanding about addiction. Not just for the individual, but for the affected family/social network as well. My education at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary has also equipped me with God's ultimate resource for our afflictions - The Word of God.

I am in my mid-life body years but my spirit and soul are forever young. I love people. I value my innate ability for unconditional positive regard for all souls. I believe all people are born good and beautiful, but through tough life experiences we get stuck in pain and fear. By identifying autonomic body responses and the connection to our thoughts there is a way to get back to the person we were intended to be, happy and full of life.

I’m a husband and dad to three boys (ages 16, 13 and 8), and family is a huge part of my life. We live on a 20-acre homestead where we raise chickens, goats, pigs, and cows, and we spend a lot of time in the garden. Life on the farm keeps me grounded and reminds me daily of the value of patience, hard work, and slowing down to enjoy what really matters. Faith and community are also central for me. I’m actively involved in my church, and I see my work as an extension of that calling to walk alongside others. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial streak. Alongside my therapy work, I am starting a tech start-up, I’ve run an online store, and I even dabble in Bitcoin mining. I enjoy the challenge of building things from the ground up and thinking outside the box. I also read a lot, and my libertarian leanings have been shaped by writers like Murray Rothbard. The conservative/libertarian focus on freedom, personal responsibility and low time preference connects deeply with how I approach life and therapy: we’re at our best when we are free to live with responsibility in society, own our choices, and pursue truth apart from coercion. When it comes to therapy itself, I integrate my faith with practical, proven methods. I use Christian Counseling, CBT, Reality Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and the Gottman Method to help people grow emotionally, spiritually, and relationally. My goal is to give you a space where your values are respected, your faith is honored, and you feel equipped to face life’s challenges with hope and clarity. If you’re looking for a therapist who understands the importance of faith, family, freedom, and practical tools for change, I’d love to walk with you on your journey.

I am Ruth Westfall, a licensed Social Worker, with 30 years of experience as a therapist. I am passionate about getting to know my clients and seeing them heal and overcome life's challenges. I have the greatest respect for those who seek support in order to make positive change in their lives! After finding myself a single parent, I needed to find work in a field where I could support my son and myself. I was always interested in a helping profession as well as one where I could be involved in social justice. I graduated with a Master's in Social Work in 1995 and immediately found work at a mental health clinic. I worked there for 24 years in various positions, not only as a therapist but as an advocate for victims of crime. The pandemic caused such a need for therapists that I was able to branch out on my own and go into private practice, which I love! Since 2020, I have worked with hundreds of clients on telehealth platforms and helped them cope with the many challenges of these last few years.

I work with young adults and adults who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or weighed down by life’s challenges. Many of my clients struggle with depression, anxiety, chronic pain, stress, or difficult transitions such as ruptured relationships, parenthood, perimenopause, or grief. They often come to me looking for support, hope, motivation, and ways to feel more grounded and purposeful in daily life. It's important to me to create a safe, non-judgmental space for you to feel deeply heard and supported, while also being gently encouraged to grow. While my approach to your care is personalized and collaborative, I draw from evidence-based methods like Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), DBT, CBT, ACT, and mindfulness to help you build tools you can actually use beyond our sessions. I bring not only knowledge, but also humility and lived experience to this work. My goal is always to co-create a space where you will feel safe, respected, and empowered. I have over 20 years of experience in helping clients unlearn emotional and physical pain to make it possible to reconnect with yourself and others in a safe and empowering way. I create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere to help make therapy approachable and encourage feedback from clients as to what will help them feel most with the process of therapy. After discussing together your goal, we will decide on a the right treatment plan. I use Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET), and Internal Family Systems (IFS) techniques to address each client's unique perspectives.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Michigan rather than a city like Detroit?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in Michigan. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Michigan from Grand Rapids to Warren! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Michigan.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on Depression?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, Depression, is filtering therapists in Michigan that work with patients with similar concerns.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What happens during the first therapy session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
