Hello! I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor-Supervisor based in Ohio. I graduated from Bowling Green State University with a degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. I have been providing therapy services for the past 20 years, 10 of those years spent in university counseling centers. I tend to treat adults who are struggling with life transitions, identity issues, relationship distress, trauma and personality concerns.
In our first session, we will begin to build rapport and get to know one another. We will discuss your concerns and mental health history as well as my therapeutic style. Together we will begin to formulate a treatment strategy that we are comfortable with. A nonjudgmental space for reflection and support will be provided.
I think that one of my greatest attributes that I bring to the treatment of my clients is that I do my best to leave my ego outside of every session. Every client deserves to be treated as a human who is the expert of their life and experiences. This means that we are a team who will collaborate and work together to create a space where courage is cultivated so that change is possible. I lead with grace and compassion but also realize that humor is often necessary in our relationship to build trust and to normalize that sometimes therapy is uncomfortable. I will always provide truth, honesty and empathy in every interaction. You will never wonder about our relationship or treatment process as I believe transparency is important to build a therapeutic alliance.
My therapeutic style works best with clients who are struggling to form productive, lasting relationships within their lives. This could be for a number of reasons such as previous traumatic experiences , attachment style, personality concerns, anxiety or depression. I build a therapeutic alliance based on mutual concern and commitment to healthy, prolonged change that starts with our relationship. Clients that I see tend to start sessions guarded and skeptical, so we focus on our relationship and rapport in order to build trust so that change in session can translate into change outside of session.
I tend to use an interpersonal process model in sessions in order to focus on the therapeutic relationship as the primary vehicle for client change. In this model, I will observe and address recurring interpersonal patterns that emerge during the session, using techniques such as process comments to bring these patterns to your awareness. Sessions will emphasize the importance of building a strong working alliance between therapist and client, which allows for the exploration and resolution of interpersonal issues. When using this approach I may employ role-playing, cognitive restructuring, and emotion-focused techniques to help you understand and modify your relational behaviors. By reenacting your interpersonal conflicts within the therapeutic relationship, I can provide a corrective emotional experience that can lead to healthier interactions outside of therapy.
I will utilize EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is sessions with clients who are appropriate and ready to process traumatic memories. During an EMDR session, the client will be guided to focus on a traumatic memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation. The goal is to reprocess the traumatic memory, reducing its emotional impact and helping the client develop more adaptive beliefs and behaviors.
I will use varying Cognitive interventions such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in sessions to help clients manage their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors more effectively. The differing cognitive techniques used in session depend heavily on the client and their unique personality. In an ACT session, I would encourage clients to embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them, while focusing on committed actions that are aligned with their values. CBT sessions would involve identifying and changing unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviors, through more structured exercises. With DBT, I would introduce clients to specific skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness in order to help clients cope with intense emotions and improve relationships.
