I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified Bariatric Counselor, in addition to being a Registered Dietitian. I work with individuals who struggle with binge eating disorder, compulsive overeating and emotional eating. I see clients who are considering, preparing for or have had weight loss surgery. I am able to combine my skills as a mental health counselor and registered dietitian to provide you with the best treatment for your struggles.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

I want to get to know you by listening to your history, understanding the present distress that is bringing you into therapy and clarify what you truly want to achieve to feel therapy was successful. I will introduce you to the dieting mentality and provide research based information that can start your path to healing. I will always end each session with understanding what you want to do before the next session that will move you closer to your goals. I often email handouts, video links, resources and exercises to further your understanding of what we are doing together.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I approach therapy with compassion and curiosity. Getting to know you, how you think and what you feel is important, but making sure that you believe I understand you is vital. We will start where you are and map a plan to where you want to be. Therapy requires courage to face the things in our life that we do not like and having the confidence to figure out a plan to improve it.

My treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

My goal is to help you become present to your thoughts and feelings with curiosity, not judgement. I work with clients in helping them to accept the feelings that they have and learn to embrace them as important and useful information to live your best life. it is vital that we see when our thoughts are helpful or harmful and ways we can begin to invest in more helpful thoughts without the expectation that we must "stop" the unhelpful thoughts. I assist you in uncovering how your relationship with food and your patterns of eating are strongly correlated to the thoughts or "stories" you tell yourself. What matters is guiding these changes to support what really matters to you and getting the outcomes you desire.

Compassion Focused

I am convinced with the research that self compassion is a necessary component of change. We must truly understand what it is and how it is different from self esteem. The harsh inner critic will most likely continue to live in our heads, however we are going to decide how much of our attention we give to it. Self compassion is ultimately being your own best friend and for many people this is very difficult to practice, but it can be learned! I want to make sure you understand the importance of self compassion with weight management and why it is so vital.
