My name is Alissa Madsen and I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I have a Master of Social Work from Texas State University. Having lived in Central Texas for 11 years, I’m proud to call it my home. Social work is my second career, but the skills of patience and determination I learned prior to making this transition have been invaluable. In my past life as a classical musician, I was a perfectionist and struggled with imposter syndrome. Further, as a single parent for more than a decade, I know what it's like to feel isolated and alone. I believe that these experiences have helped me to become more empathetic and understanding. I'm passionate about mental health and want to help you live your happiest, most fulfilled life.

Do you ever wonder if you’re anxious because you’re depressed, or are you depressed because you’re anxious? Everywhere you turn, you hear about the importance of self care, but nothing you’ve tried seems to gel into a habit. Besides, how many bath bombs can one person buy before they feel better, right? Humor aside, you don’t have to keep living a life that causes you to suffer. Every human is unique, with unique needs. It is possible to live the life that is right for you.

Hi there, I'm Christine. It is a real privilege in life to serve as a therapist, and I greatly appreciate your bravery and vulnerability in seeking out support. I find it immensely rewarding working with Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) and Autistic/ADHD Adults with anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma. I strongly believe in the importance and healing nature of being seen, heard, and understood within a warm, therapeutic relationship, combined with evidence-based techniques, such as EMDR and compassion-focused methods. As a therapist, I am committed to compassionate, curious support to help you live authentically, joyfully, and reclaim that kindness towards yourself to navigate difficulties in life. And with lived experience as a Highly Sensitive Person on the autism spectrum, I tend to connect most easily with others who resonate with these traits, and generally am gentle, sensitive, direct, and flexible in my approach. I would be honored to support you in your journey, and encourage you to reach out if you feel that we may be a good fit together.

I offer a different perspective. I am licensed in Texas with a decade of professional counseling experience. My natural counseling style is more flexible, casual, and exploratory. I like to create a safe space that helps clients get curious about the root cause of why they do what they do. I help clients find more than just band aid solutions. Taking the first step to seeking a more fulfilling and happier life takes courage. I am here to support you in that process! I am an lgbtq+ affirming therapist who is part of the community myself so I work well with clients in the lgbtq+ community, including trans clients and clients struggling with coming out. Lastly, I work well with clients facing issues related to gender dysphoria, covert narcissistic abuse, substance abuse, domestic abuse, family enmeshment, and self esteem.

My orientation to counseling is informed by paradigms of change and healing that I have been immersed in for many years, including Vipassana meditation in the tradition of S.N. As a Licensed Professional Counselor in the states of Texas and Connecticut, as well as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida, I have more than ten years' experience in helping clients with effective, fairly rapid relief from the symptoms they have been experiencing--with many telling me that they feel significantly better after only a few sessions. Before going into private practice, I worked in a variety of clinical settings, including community/public mental health, managed care, and a psychiatric hospital. Although I work with a wide range of client concerns, I work especially often with clients identifying as LGBTQ and with couples. I have over ten years' experience in treating depression, anxiety, panic attacks, substance use and addiction, and in helping clients to improve their coping skills to better manage stress when it occurs in their lives. Past clients have often described me as compassionate but also as "blunt" and "no bullsh*t" (their words--not mine), helping them to achieve results often much more quickly than other therapists they have previously had.

It is fair to say there are a lot of stressors in our society, some so large they can have a huge impact on how we enjoy and navigate our lives. I'm here to tell you it isn't all in your head, you're not alone, and it is ok to ask for help. I am a licensed clinical social worker offering virtual therapy to individuals in Louisiana and Texas. I utilize a client-centered approach, meaning you are the expert in your own life and I am here only to assist you in reaching your goals. Trauma-informed care is a very important part of the services I provide, as I specialize in working with survivors of trauma, with expertise in abuse and assault. I believe it is necessary to acknowledge traumatic experiences throughout our lives and how those experiences may shape our worldview. Trauma is incorporated into the majority of the work I do with clients, it looks different for us all but it exists in some capacity. I am lucky to have had opportunities in my career that have allowed me to expand my practice to include working with individuals experiencing chronic illnesses. I provide a space where folks with chronic illnesses can share openly about the confines of their illnesses and receive validation around those feelings, sometimes for the first time. Most of the time clients are having a very normal reaction to an abnormal situation, no one prepares us for the possibility of chronic illness and little support is available for those who experience it. Lastly, as a queer woman, it is important to me that I provide quality care for LGBTQ teens and adults. Too often, we cannot find providers who hold identities similar to our own. The last few years have allowed me to work with LGBTQ teens in my area and I have learned a great deal from them. I hope to continue this work for some time while growing my practice and providing quality care to anyone who is interested in working with me.

Hello! I'm Dr. Edwards, a dedicated psychologist based in Houston, Texas. My journey into psychology began amidst the scenic views of the Texas Hill Country, where I was born and raised. My passion for understanding the human mind led me to The University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, where I obtained my bachelor’s degree in psychology. Driven to deepen my knowledge and expertise, I pursued and earned my Ph.D. in Clinical Health Psychology from The University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton. Pursuing excellence then took me to Syracuse, NY, where I braved one of the coldest years of my life to complete my pre-doctoral internship at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. However, the heart of Texas and the opportunity for a post-doctoral fellowship at The Menninger Clinic, an esteemed affiliate of The Baylor College of Medicine, called me back to Houston, which has warmly remained my home.

Something you may be curious about is why I became a therapist. There’s a long version and a short version, so I think I’ll give you the medium version. I’ve always enjoyed connecting with people. I have always enjoyed building relationships with others, and helping where and when I can. I can honestly say. I have a lot of life experiences that have helped me with being subjective, and have cultivated who I am today. During my journey, I was able to spend time with people who were different than me, which has helped expand my mind, understand, admire, and connect with people who have a wide variety of views, beliefs, and experiences. After I graduated college, I worked at a community mental health agency that has provided me with a lot of experiences in many different areas of mental health. It is a lot of work, but I am truly grateful for the opportunity to work with so many different people, and in different capacities. I am passionate about the human experience, and I currently see my mission as empowering others to explore their identity, discovering their authentic selves, and allow themselves to step into their truth. It is important to know I am on this journey of life myself! I’m not a therapist who thinks she has all the answers, or who’s going to give you my opinions as fact, or who will tell you exactly what you should do. I see my role as a dedicated partner here to collaborate with you and assist you in uncovering all the layers that make you who you are.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Texas rather than a city like Dallas?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Texas from Houston to Austin! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Texas.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
