I take a holistic perspective with my clients to address the health of body, mind, and spirit. I believe that a solid therapeutic relationship between client and therapist is a crucial part of the healing process, and that techniques and therapy approaches must “fit” the client in order to be effective—there is no “one size fits all” therapy. My goal, as a counselor and therapist, is to deeply understand my client, and when this happens we are able to identify areas of life that need to be changed, and ways of going about doing that. Therapy is a collaborative process between a trained therapist and a client who wants to change.

My path to becoming a therapist began with a deep curiosity about how our past experiences and family dynamics shape us. After gaining experience in a variety of settings—from in-home therapy and outpatient facilities to addiction treatment centers—I consistently observed a core theme: many of the challenges people face, whether it's anxiety, PTSD, panic attacks or relational issues, are rooted in our past experiences. These observations have shaped my practice, leading me to create a collaborative and gentle space where clients can explore these foundational issues. My goal is to help people build a strong sense of self-trust, leading to greater inner calm and more meaningful connections.

I’m a licensed psychotherapist who blends practical tools with a calm, trauma-informed approach. I help adults and couples reduce anxiety, improve communication, and feel steadier in their bodies and relationships. My style is warm, direct, and collaborative. You’ll get clear goals, gentle structure, and skills you can use between sessions. My work draws from attachment theory, CBT/ACT, IFS-informed parts work, and somatic regulation so change is felt, not just understood. Clients describe me as grounding and thoughtful; they leave sessions with language for what they’re feeling and simple steps to move forward. I’m culturally responsive and sensitive to faith, family roles, and identity. You don’t have to explain your background to be understood here. Together, we’ll slow things down, make sense of patterns, and build flexible habits that support the life you want.

Hello! I’m Aida Valerio-Lerner. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who found my calling 11 years ago having discovered that I wanted to provide people with a therapeutic space to heal, grow, and ultimately transform. Are you going through a personal challenge or major life transition? Do you need a safe space to have your experiences affirmed and validated? Do you feel overwhelmed by your emotions and in need of support? Have you considered speaking to someone but are unsure of how to begin? Wherever you are in your journey, I want to congratulate you on exploring possibilities to receive help. Therapy, like anything new or unknown, can feel scary. When Wendy was learning how to fly in Peter Pan, her fear of “what if I fall?” was met with Peter’s response of “oh, darling, what if you fly?” Not only did she fly, but she also transformed! My therapeutic approach is gentle, warm, and trauma-informed to ensure your comfort every step of the way. I listen attentively and non-judgmentally, welcoming your authentic self. You can express yourself in English and/or Spanish as I am fluent in both languages. Together, we can overcome anything.

Hello, thank you for learning more about me and how we might work together toward your goals. I am a licensed therapist (LCSW) in New York City and New Jersey. My approach to working with clients is supportive and strength-based. No matter what you have been through, you are resilient. I work with you to discover your truth and your authenticity within you. While my background is in trauma-informed care, I apply treatment modalities such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), Dialectic behavior therapy, DBT and talk therapy. I adapt most of my methods to individual needs. I am a parent and an African American woman with a deep understanding of the intersectionality of race, culture, and class. I approach my work through an anti-oppressive and social justice lens with a deeper understanding of systems of oppression as they relate to race, gender, and sexuality. I always approach diversity in the room as a gift with significant room for the clients to teach me. I am a curious person and respect the uniqueness of every human being’s background.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience helping adults move through anxiety, relationship challenges, trauma, and the stressful transitions that life can bring. Clients often tell me I’m warm, honest, and easy to talk to, but also straightforward and challenging in a way that helps them make real change and experience growth. I don’t sit back and nod; I’m actively engaged in the process with you. My work combines deep emotional insight with practical tools you can use in everyday life. I draw from CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and psychodynamic therapy, and tailor my approach to what works best for you as a person, not following a generic formula. My goal is to help you feel understood, supported, and capable of change and growth. You don’t have to carry everything on your own, and therapy is a place where you can share, breathe, make sense of things, and start feeling more in control again.

Hello! I have been a therapist for 17 years beginning in the field of social services and working my way to private practice. I have also trained several staff members in my private practice and work towards building a very hands on approach. I enjoy being involved in my clients life, as you allow me to, in order to figure things out. I enjoy the challenge it poses to the both of us to work through difficult topics and/or decisions as well. I aim to be a support but will always play the opposing side to make sure you trust yourself in the decisions you make because they were yours! Unbiased feedback is also part of this process and allows for more openness so we can go deeper. I pride myself on having a great rapport and retention with my clients.

Good Day. I'm Karen. Learning how to cope with change can be difficult. Are there times where you feel as if friends and family misunderstand you? Do you find yourself struggling with change making it hard to adapt to new environments? If so, I am here to help! I have worked in social services and mental health for over 10 years. As a Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor for over 7 years, I have collaborated with agencies and organizations within New York City area to address the needs of individuals and families; including those who are struggling to heal from the impact of anxiety, depression and various addictions that can cause damage to the lives of both young people and adults alike. When collaborating with an individual, I provide support no matter your socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and other personal backgrounds. I am particularly sensitive to clients facing moments of transition, such as stress, loss, academic issues, employee issues, coping skills, marriage and family conflict; when the delicate balance can seem to tremble, and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and self-doubt can emerge.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by New York rather than a city like New York City?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across New York from Buffalo to Rochester! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in New York.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on Family Conflict?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, Family Conflict, is filtering therapists in New York that work with patients with similar concerns.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
