Martin Cooper
I have been a practicing Mental Health Counselor/Psychotherapist for the past twenty-five years. I have been a Nationally Certified Counselor and a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor and in 2005, was amongst the first 100 counselors to be granted a NYS Mental Health Counselor License. I am eclectic and interactive in my approach to helping people do better with how they live their lives. In a supportive, comfortable and confidential environment, I work with each person to address immediate as well as long standing issues and concerns with a focus on understanding, exploring choices and making positive changes. During our counseling sessions, I will be gathering information, addressing any questions or concerns and discussing ways of moving forward. My specialty areas include relationship issues, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, lifestyle issues, personality issues, adjustment disorders, and family/parenting issues. My treatment approaches include Cognitive/Cognitive Behavioral, Gestalt, Interpersonal and Short-Term Solution-Focused Therapy.
First session
In the first session, the client will get a real sense of how I work in the helping process. On the first visit, I create a safe and comfortable atmosphere where the client can freely discuss their reasons for seeking therapy. During the inital session, I will be gathering information, addressing any questions or concerns the client may have.....
Strengths
My strength lies in my interest in helping people live an emotionally healthy life. Life is such that all of us will go through many different kinds and varied life experiences. I listen when needed and help by asking thoughtful questions to help a client understand what is going on within the individual and interpersonally. I believe I'm able to create a comfortable atmosphere that enables clients to explore the difficult issues that they are experiencing in their lives.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is one who is committed to doing the work that's needed to improve how theiir life moves forward. The client needs to know that they need to take responsibilty for thieir own behaviors, ways of thinking and how they are with others. The client should be open to new ideas given that whatever has been going on is not working for them.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I first create a comfortable atmosphere that helps clients speak freely so as to geta sense of how they think. I will during the first few sessions explain what CBT is and the individual elements involved ie: ways of thinkiing and beahing.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
I use this approach in how I am with clients. I am suppportiive, reflective, and curious about my client's lives...The positive outcomes are a direct result of the relationship created between myself and the client.
