Joslyn Carter

LCSW (she/her)20 years of experience

I am an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) with over two decades of experience in the mental health field. Over the past 20 years, I have had the privilege of helping individuals navigate life's most emotional landscape. I offer flexible, accessible care virtually that fits seamlessly into your daily life, allowing you to prioritize your mental health without the stress of a commute. My practice focuses deeply on supporting you through challenges that can otherwise feel overwhelming: Anxiety by finding tools to quiet a restless mind, manage panic, and regain a sense of control and calm; Depression helping you navigate feelings of low energy, hopelessness, or disconnection, and working together to rediscover purpose, motivation, and vitality; and Grief and Loss by providing a gentle, patient space to process the pain of loss—whether recent or long-standing—and learning how to move forward while honoring your experiences. My therapeutic philosophy is grounded in trauma-informed care, meaning I prioritize safety, trustworthiness, and choice in our sessions, ensuring your past experiences are respected as we build your future. I offer a collaborative, conversational space to unwrap complex challenges and develop practical, day-to-day coping mechanisms. I blend my clinical expertise with genuine warmth to create a customized treatment plan that honors your specific goals, values, and strengths. I also work with individuals who are on Family Medical Leave (FMLA). Ready to take the next step? Please reach out today to schedule an initial virtual consultation. Thank you for considering me as a partner in your wellness journey.

Strengths

In our sessions, you will have an active partner, not just a passive listener. My therapeutic approach is warm, collaborative, and entirely non-judgmental. My operational principle is to put myself in the shoes of those I serve and treat everyone the way I would want to be treated. As such, I ground my practice in trauma-informed care and cultural competency, using cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, and mindfulness modalities with unique pacing and goals. Together, we will look at the big picture of your life, identify what is holding you back, and build practical tools to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

Ideal clients

My ideal clients are adults at any life stage navigating some of life's most tender, overwhelming, and isolating chapters. You are a good fit for my care if you see yourself in any of these experiences-weighed down by self-doubt, navigating life-changing transitions, exhausted by anxiety or depression, moving through grief and loss, or feeling deeply lonely or disconnected. You don't have to have your goals fully figured out to start therapy. I welcome clients who feel messy, uncertain, or completely overwhelmed. We will explore the deeper "why" behind your pain, examine the cultural and life experiences that shaped you, and commit to a collaborative healing process.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I view our individual sessions as a collaborative workshop. While I bring the expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) principles, you are the expert on your own life. My role is to help you map out your automatic thinking patterns, gently challenge challenge the beliefs than no longer serve you, and practice behavioral steps at a pace that feels safe and sustainable for you.

Motivational Interviewing

In my practice, I utilize a client-centered style called Motivational Interviewing (MI). If you feel stuck, ambivalent, or unsure about a major life change, I offer a compassionate, judgment-free space to help you clarify your values and turn your goals into manageable steps. I won't lecture you or give you a checklist. Instead, we will work as partners to explore your mixed feelings about change, tap into your strengths, and help you find your own reasons to move forward.

Psychodynamic

We will collaboratively explore, through talk therapy, hidden patterns, unresolved conflicts, and underlying experiences that shape how you feel, think, and relate to others. This approach focuses on the "why" behind your emotional and behavioral patterns, bringing unconscious thoughts into awareness to help you make intentional, lasting changes.

Culturally Sensitive Therapy

You can expect a supportive environment where you are valued beyond your surface symptoms. We will explore how family expectations, community ties, or migration journeys shape your current struggles. You will never have to filter away core parts of your identity to make your therapist comfortable- giving you the dedicated space to be truly seen, heard and understood.
