I am a seasoned clinician with 32 years of experience. I treat people ages 12 through older adulthood from a wide variety of ethnic and social backgrounds. I specialize in anxiety, depression, ADHD, and spiritual concerns, although I have also worked productively with individuals suffering from severe psychotic states and personality disorders. I also frequently see couples. My interpersonal style is relaxed, curious, and conventional. I also appreciate a good joke, and find that there seems to be a fair amount of chuckling in my sessions, which is helpful for individuals struggling with depression in particular...though I do not intentionally plan to introduce humor into our discussion, but, rather, it just happens spontaneously.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

I am fairly casual in the first and all subsequent sessions. Initially, I invite clients to simply tell me in their own words what they are struggling with. I will usually follow up with questions about their history, family and romantic relationships, and the way(s) in which their difficulties are affecting their daily lives.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I believe that it is the quality of the relationship that is most helpful for people. I approach each treatment relationship, not as an example of some diagnostic category, but as a unique set of struggles. Finally, I spend much time doing research and writing, and recently edited and published a book on the "future orientation of mind, which concerns how we can become aware of new directions for our lives by mindful attention to our daily experience. I believe that remaining intellectually curious and "alive" is essential for enhancing my capacity to think deeply and originally about individuals' needs. My book is available for you to see at routledge.com. Just enter my last name in the search bar (Amundson) and my work will appear in the uppoer left hand corner of the following page. It has a brown and orangish cover.

My treatment methods

Interpersonal

I utilize and an active, conversational style to help clients discuss their past histories and how they imagine this has affected their life presently. I focus on the quality of the treatment relationship, and how clients experience this. Based on these factors, I determine what type of method(s) suit the client best - some people need a more advice-giving approach, while others benefit from processing their early life-stage problems and traumas.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Examining the different thoughts that arise prior to experiencing, say, anxiety or depression is helpful as a means of learning skills to keep these manageable and/or to eliminate them altogether.
