I earned my Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology/Argosy University in Chicago. I believe the most essential element of therapy is developing a trusting, therapeutic alliance in order to facilitate change. I specialize in integrated treatments for addressing co-occurring disorders, offering genuine compassion, honesty, and humor, along with a trauma informed care approach to treatment. I work independently running a private practice and my experiences include working as an outpatient mental health therapist at Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, serving those struggling with mental health issues as well as psychiatric disorders in the community. I have also provided psychotherapy at Family Guidance Centers, assisting those with substance use and psychiatric disorders after completing my internship with Rosecrance Treatment Center working as a substance abuse counselor.

I am a licensed clinical therapist and life coach with extensive experience helping individuals create meaningful, lasting change in their lives. My work is focused on supporting people who are high-functioning yet feel stuck, overwhelmed, emotionally drained, or uncertain about their next steps. Many of the clients I work with are successful on the outside but internally struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, relationship challenges, burnout, or difficulty following through on the changes they know they need to make. I bring a results-oriented, structured, and insight-driven approach to my work. As a clinician, I am trained to assess emotional patterns, behavioral responses, and underlying drivers that keep people stuck. As a life coach, I help clients move forward with clarity, accountability, and intention. This dual lens allows me to meet clients where they are emotionally while also helping them create practical, forward-moving change in their daily lives. Clients often seek me out for my ability to quickly identify core issues, provide direct and thoughtful feedback, and help them gain perspective without judgment. I am known for balancing compassion with honesty and for helping clients feel both supported and challenged in ways that lead to real progress. My style is collaborative, grounded, and focused on building sustainable tools rather than temporary relief. I work with individuals who are ready to be intentional about their growth and committed to showing up for the process. Whether clients are navigating personal transitions, relationship concerns, emotional regulation, or a desire for greater fulfillment and direction, my goal is to help them feel more confident, grounded, and capable of creating the life they want to live.

I’m a collaborative therapist who believes therapy works best when it feels like a partnership. You’re the expert on your life — I bring tools, perspective, and support — and together we figure out what helps you move forward. I work a lot with trauma, depression, and anxiety, and I know how heavy those experiences can feel. Whether you’re overwhelmed, stuck in negative patterns, carrying past pain, or just exhausted from holding it all together, therapy can be a place where you don’t have to do that alone. We go at your pace, and we focus on what actually feels useful to you. My approach blends CBT, DBT, and EMDR, along with other strategies depending on your needs. Some days that might look like learning concrete coping skills, other days it might mean processing deeper experiences, or just having a space to untangle what’s going on. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all model — therapy should fit you. I’m also a strong LGBTQI+ affirming ally and am committed to creating a space that is safe, inclusive, and judgment-free. All parts of you are welcome here. My goal is to help you better understand yourself, build tools that actually work in real life, and feel more steady, confident, and in control of where your life is headed.

If you have seen the movie “Groundhog day” starring Bill Murray as Phil, you would say it is a comedy. But it is more. He finally breaks out of his dull, repetitive life not by changing his surroundings or anyone else; he changes himself. Just like Phil, if you don’t change something, nothing will change. That is the purpose of counseling: to help you try something different, to change something about yourself, to help you become the best YOU. I have 30+ years of experience treating: • Addictions • Mental illnesses • Depression • Trauma and abuse recovery • Anger management and more If I can’t help, I will connect you with someone who can. Hello! So glad you are here! Do you get into relationships hoping that this time things will be different? Do you feel overwhelmed and have a hard time recognizing your dreams and goals? Would you like a more kind and loving relationship with yourself and the ability to extend that to others in your life? I love helping people who are ready to identify patterns that hold them back from happiness and fulfillment in both relationships and other areas of life. My name is Lisa, and I provide therapy for both addictions and mental health issues. While I have treated those with active addiction for many years, I also treat behavior patterns stemming from addictions and family dysfunction. Although these patterns started out helping us survive challenging situations, they can keep us stuck. Many therapy seekers have found that these patterns can impact their ability to recognize their needs, dreams and to create and sustain both platonic and romantic relationships. I have a Master of Education degree in Counselor Education from Southern Illinois University specializing in Substance Abuse. From substance abuse counseling, I have expanded my areas of specialties to include family and relationship dynamics and how to heal "survival skills" that have evolved into self-defeating life patterns.

I believe therapy should feel calm, respectful, and genuinely supportive. I create a space where people can slow down, speak openly, and feel heard without judgment or pressure. My approach is warm, grounded, and collaborative, allowing clients to explore their experiences at a pace that feels comfortable while still working toward meaningful change. Many people come to therapy carrying stress, anxiety, relationship challenges, or past experiences while continuing to manage daily responsibilities. I enjoy helping people make sense of what they are going through, build insight, and reconnect with their strengths. Conversations are honest and thoughtful, with a focus on understanding the whole person rather than just one concern. My goal is to offer steady guidance while respecting each client’s individuality, goals, and values. Therapy becomes a space to reflect, gain clarity, heal, and begin moving forward with greater confidence and emotional balance.

I have a Doctorate in Psychology and am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). I have been working as a therapist for over 16 years. I specialize in mood disorders, anxiety, trauma and LGBTQIA issues. I believe that therapy should be a safe place to talk about personal issues without any judgment. We all need someone to talk to and therapy provides that space where you can be yourself. We all go through some things from time to time and should be able allowed to talk with someone who is willing to listen and provide us with the support that we need.

You deserve an opportunity to feel supported by having your thoughts and feelings be acknowledged. Throughout the course of life, we may experience mental health challenges that arise unexpectedly. Allow yourself to heal from those challenges and grow towards the future with the support that therapy provides. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I am invested in my clients whole self by guiding them into controlling their narrative and becoming their own author. I obtained my MSW at Governors State University in 2019 with a specialization in children and families.

My name is Rafiah Maxie-Cole, and I’m honored to walk alongside you on your journey toward healing and wholeness. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over two decades of experience, I’ve supported individuals through a wide range of challenges—always with compassion, cultural awareness, and unwavering belief in their capacity to grow. This work is personal. I understand the weight of grief and the complexity of emotional pain—having lost my son to suicide. That loss fuels my commitment to creating safe, affirming spaces where clients feel seen, heard, and empowered. I don’t just offer tools—I offer presence, partnership, and hope. My greatest strength lies in listening deeply and holding space without judgment. I honor each client’s unique story and walk with them as they uncover their strength, reclaim their voice, and move toward lasting change. You don’t have to do this alone. I look forward to meeting you soon.

I believe everyone deserves a safe and supportive space to explore the barriers that interfere with living the life they desire. My goal is to foster a comfortable and affirming environment, particularly for individuals from oppressed and marginalized communities. Having access to support, self-awareness, and effective coping skills is essential for managing life’s stressors. I also believe in the importance of processing past experiences and exploring how they shape our current worldview and relationships.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Illinois rather than a city like Chicago?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in Illinois. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Illinois from Rockford to Springfield! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Illinois.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on Self Esteem?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, Self Esteem, is filtering therapists in Illinois that work with patients with similar concerns.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What happens during the first therapy session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
