Something you may be curious about is why I became a therapist. There’s a long version and a short version, so I think I’ll give you the medium version. I’ve always enjoyed connecting with people. I have always enjoyed building relationships with others, and helping where and when I can. I can honestly say. I have a lot of life experiences that have helped me with being subjective, and have cultivated who I am today.
During my journey, I was able to spend time with people who were different than me, which has helped expand my mind, understand, admire, and connect with people who have a wide variety of views, beliefs, and experiences. After I graduated college, I worked at a community mental health agency that has provided me with a lot of experiences in many different areas of mental health. It is a lot of work, but I am truly grateful for the opportunity to work with so many different people, and in different capacities.
I am passionate about the human experience, and I currently see my mission as empowering others to explore their identity, discovering their authentic selves, and allow themselves to step into their truth. It is important to know I am on this journey of life myself! I’m not a therapist who thinks she has all the answers, or who’s going to give you my opinions as fact, or who will tell you exactly what you should do. I see my role as a dedicated partner here to collaborate with you and assist you in uncovering all the layers that make you who you are.

My path to becoming a mental health provider began with a deep curiosity about the human experience and a genuine desire to help others find meaning and healing in their lives. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand how life’s challenges can impact our well-being, and I saw the profound difference that compassionate support can make. These early experiences inspired me to learn more about how we cope, grow, and ultimately thrive, even in the face of adversity. As I continued my education and personal growth, I became increasingly drawn to the field of mental health. I was captivated by the resilience and wisdom people bring to their healing journeys. I realized that being a provider would allow me to walk alongside others as they navigate their unique paths, offering guidance, encouragement, and evidence-based tools to support their goals. What truly motivates me is the belief that every person has the capacity for growth and transformation. I am honored to help create a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered to make positive changes. My journey as a provider is rooted in empathy, curiosity, and a commitment to whole-person care, and I am grateful every day for the opportunity to support others.

I chose to change careers late in life. It has been a wonderful decision. I am able to help people in their daily lives be happy.
I attended SMU Counseling Program in Plano from 2010 to 2013. I was privileged to complete my practicum and internship at the Resource Center in Dallas. I requested this opportunity so I could help as many people as possible. This was not standard procedure, but I was allowed to do the unusual.
I believe clients simply want to be happy. They want to make their choices in life without guilt or shame. Everyone deserves that freedom. I hope that I can help people facilitate that life.
I am happy to share techniques that provide acceptance that allow people to not be impacted by the judgmental world in which we live.
Please give me a call and see if we connect and if you feel comfortable and safe speaking with me.

If you are ready to take that step I am here to support and encourage you. Wherever you're at on your journey, I am willing to meet you there and support you in reaching your desired destination.

My name is Graham Maxey. I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor since 1983, after graduating from the University of Houston/Clear Lake with a Master of Arts in Behavioral Science. I had noticed for many years that the primary problems people experienced in life were mainly due to living in a space of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that were "too small" to accommodate their well-being or their enjoyment in living. My goal as a counselor has always been to help clients "widen" the spaces they live in and let them have fuller access to all that their lives actually can provide for them.

I take an empathetic, collaborative approach to therapy, meeting you where you are and helping you move toward the life you want to live. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you can explore your experiences, gain new insights, and develop practical tools to manage stress, improve relationships, and strengthen self-esteem.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked in private practice and nonprofit settings, supporting clients from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to move forward, I’m here to help you find clarity and build confidence in your next steps.
I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S) and former ER nurse with a holistic, client-centered approach to therapy. I specialize in helping individuals navigate life transitions, grief, anxiety, identity exploration, and relationship challenges. My dual background in mental health and medical care gives me a deep understanding of how emotional and physical health intersect, especially for clients managing chronic stress, trauma, or invisible burdens.
