My name is Rick Amaral, ACSW, LCSW. Let me begin by fully introducing myself and sharing with you my years of experience as a clinician, manager and director. I have been working with children, teens and adult in many different formats (i.e. individual, family work, group work) for over 30 years in both private practice, as well as with local community mental health agencies. I am also an Adjunct Professor at the local area colleges for the past 20+ years, teaching both psychology and sociology courses (both graduate and undergraduate level courses). In our sessions, I would like to utilize a strengths-based approach that works alongside you to identify areas that you would like to work on. Acknowledging that all cars come with rearview mirrors, I would like to spend some time hearing from you about past life events and journey that you think have contributed to your development (both positively and otherwise). My preferred way of assisting you is to focus on a Life Narrative format. Such narratives allow for many chapters, some written, many left to be written. When warranted, I will provide psycho-educational information on topics of interest (i.e. diagnosis, skill building, coping skills, mindfulness, etc..) and will share with you both local and community supports that you could draw upon after our time together has come to a close.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor in the states of Texas and Connecticut, as well as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida, I have more than ten years' experience in helping clients with effective, fairly rapid relief from the symptoms they have been experiencing--with many telling me that they feel significantly better after only a few sessions. Before going into private practice, I worked in a variety of clinical settings, including community/public mental health, managed care, and a psychiatric hospital. Although I work with a wide range of client concerns, I work especially often with clients identifying as LGBTQ and with couples. I have over ten years' experience in treating depression, anxiety, panic attacks, substance use and addiction, and in helping clients to improve their coping skills to better manage stress when it occurs in their lives. Past clients have often described me as compassionate but also as "blunt" and "no bullsh*t" (their words--not mine), helping them to achieve results often much more quickly than other therapists they have previously had.

Have you ever felt misunderstood by family and friends? Find it difficult to trust others including professionals? Have difficulty being seen as a person and not your condition? Do you feel alone? Do you struggle with adapting and accepting your chronic illness or chronic pain? Let's talk! I can help you build tools to gain strength and confidence in managing your personal challenges. I empower adults with chronic illness/ pain or a history of abuse to take back their control and create healthy supports in order to stay on a path towards healing. Our experiences with our body or from how others treat us create unhealthy pathways for self regulation often exhibited as anger or anxiety. The compassion and guidance I provide will rewire those pathways allowing you to be the best version of yourself. In our sessions together, we will work on making small manageable changes through mindfulness, changing behaviors and embracing a positive healthy mindset. It’s often scary to start therapy for the first time or even to go back to therapy but it is the best self care gift you can give to yourself.

Telehealth Tips If you're used to seeing your mental health professional in their office, it may take some time to adjust to this new process. Take heart that our patients typically find video conferencing beneficial. Make a list of the main symptoms you want to address in the conversation. Also be sure to indicate when your symptoms started, what tends to exacerbate them, and what, if anything, seems to soothe them. Write down questions. Remember that mental health appointments are a two-way street. This is your chance to ask questions you have about your symptoms, brain scan, diagnosis, and treatment. Having a list of questions ready can help you remember to ask them. Have your medical and psychiatric history handy. Your therapist may ask questions about past medical or psychological issues in addition to inquiring about names and dosages of medications you have taken. Having this information available can save precious minutes during your appointment so you can spend more time talking about how you are going to get healthy. Minimize distractions and choose a quiet, comfortable spot One of the best strategies to ensure a meaningful appointment is to eliminate distractions. Close your door, turn off the notifications on your phone, and make sure someone is watching the kids so you can focus. Being able to hear clearly is another important element of an effective mental Tele-Health Zoom appointment. Try to minimize any background noise, such as the TV, the washing machine, or a barking dog. In addition, it's important that you feel comfortable in your setting during your appointment. Find a spot where you are relaxed and at ease. Troubleshoot technology beforehand. Find out what technology will be used and make sure you know how to use it prior to your appointment. Are you signed up for Zoom, Skype, or another video conferencing app? Do you know how it works? If you have never used the app before, do a practice call with a friend beforehand so you can work out the kinks. Set a reminder to keep appointment. Most of us can benefit from helpful reminders and alerts from our digital calendars. Setting your calendar to send you an alert 5-10 minutes prior to your virtual session can give you the time to gather your lists and questions and to prepare yourself mentally. Reminders can be especially critical if you have a tendency to be forgetful or inattentive. Unblock your phone. If you're doing a phone call, make sure your phone isn't set to block unknown callers and answer your phone at the designated time even if it shows that it's from an unknown caller. Hi there! My name is Alexandra, I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), with a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Columbia University. I have over 7 years of experience working with adults, adolescents, and children in a variety of settings; with specialized experience working with Veterans and those currently serving in the military, including active duty, Guard and Reserve components; as well as survivors of domestic violence. I currently offer individual therapy, focused on helping clients navigate feelings of anxiety, depression or overwhelm, life transitions or other ongoing stressors, as well as working through traumatic experiences. I have a particular focus on helping people cope with the emotional and psychological effects of difficult or traumatic events. I am committed to providing compassionate and effective therapy, in a safe, supportive, and nonjudgemental space. My goal is to support my clients in developing greater self-understanding and growth, supporting change, and fostering healing. If you are struggling with the effects of stress, depressed mood, anxiety, or trauma, or just want to be able to talk to someone in a supportive and nonjudgmental space - I encourage you to reach out for help, you do not have to face these challenges alone. Life is often full of an incredible mix of significant positives and profound challenges, often these challenges are filled with anxiety, overwhelm, or distress, that can at times, feel impossible to navigate. My goal is to help and support you, while you learn to navigate these challenges and work toward healing, happiness, and growth. Please remember, as you are taking this step to connect with a therapist, while it may not have been the easiest of decisions, the decision to seek help is a sign of profound strength, never one of weakness. You deserve to feel happy and well.

Hello! I treat individuals and couples. As a trained marriage and family therapist, I take a systemic view of my clients' lives, assessing the many factors that influence their experience. These include family history, interpersonal relationships, and individual development. It is normal for us to have ups and downs in our lives. Emotions can become difficult to handle; we may feel overwhelmed. Sometimes we develop thought patterns that can make us feel as though there is a battle going on inside of us. We may engage in behaviors that work against us as we strive to meet our goals--goals like having the kinds of relationships we want for ourselves. A competent therapist is someone who can, with genuine curiosity and compassion, help you get yourself back on track. My goal is to help folks rediscover and apply the essential skills they need to stay on track after therapy is over.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Connecticut rather than a city like Hartford?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Connecticut from New Haven to Springfield! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Connecticut.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
