A few moments to introduce myself. Professionally I am known as I. Barry Bell, Ph.D. I am a 73-year-old, male, Caucasian Clinical Psychologist who has been in practice for 39 years. I have worked in a variety of settings, in both in-patient psychiatric hospitals and out-patient clinical settings. I have also maintained my own private practice from September 2016 to the present. Prior to receiving my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 1985, I trained extensively as a Modern Dancer for 10 years. During these years I became deeply involved in emerging positive psychologies and Eastern/Buddhist/Taoist studies. This was the beginning of the interface between what is now referred to as Mindfulness based approaches to psychotherapy and Eastern philosophies, especially Buddhist. Mindfulness approaches to psychotherapy are now at the forefront of evidence-based interventions. I have spent more than the past 20 years studying and practicing the interface between psychotherapy and personal psychological growth. Over the years I have integrated various theoretical approaches, including depth psychodynamic theories. I will be happy to discuss my approach with you further should you choose to contact me to consider engaging in psychotherapeutic work with me.

Hi, I’m Brittany, a licensed professional counselor in Pennsylvania. I believe that everyone has the capacity for healing and growth, but without the right support, life’s challenges can feel overwhelming. In therapy, my goal is to guide and support you as you move toward healing, balance, and your fullest potential. I take a holistic approach that honors the connection between mind, body, and spirit. While many therapy styles focus on just one area, I integrate all three to help address the root of your struggles and create lasting change. Sometimes, this even includes movement in session to help process deep emotions stored in the body. Clients often describe my sessions as safe, supportive, and relaxed. I provide a nonjudgmental space where you feel heard, while also encouraging you to explore new perspectives and growth. I specialize in trauma/PTSD, anxiety, and OCD, and I also work with couples experiencing marital strain or affairs. In addition, I support individuals managing chronic illness/pain, parenting, and major life transitions. I’m trained in EMDR, CBT, I-CBT, EXRP, DBT, somatic therapy, and the Gottman Method. You don’t need to know these approaches ahead of time—I’ll recommend what best fits your needs, and together we’ll build a personalized treatment plan around your goals. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time outdoors with my family and dog, reading, traveling, going to concerts or comedy shows, and reading the bible. It’s an honor to walk alongside clients in their mental health journeys. Whether you’re beginning therapy for the first time or continuing your path, I provide a safe and structured space to process emotions, challenge unhelpful thoughts, and build skills for long-term healing and growth.

Counseling is a space where you can explore, process, heal and grow. By being vulnerable we can allow ourselves the space to reflect on who we are now and where we have come from. I believe that we deserve a space where we can feel safe, comfortable and free from judgement. In this space, we can take out some of the boxes that are stored away and discover how we can let go of what no longer serves us while creating new ways of being and relating to ourselves, others, and the world around us .

Hello and welcome! My name is Melanie Timbers, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Pennsylvania. In my 30's, I decided to change career paths pursuing my studies and career as a mental health therapist. This was one of the best decisions I ever made, as I consider it an honor and privilege supporting adults with improving their mental health and wellbeing. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh Master of Social Work Program, I have worked in the mental health profession for 7 years. Initially, I provided mental health therapy to adults in an intensive outpatient program of a psychiatric hospital. I also provided mental health therapy to adults with substance use disorders while working in a medication assisted treatment outpatient program. I certainly valued these experiences as well as my current role of providing outpatient mental health therapy to adults who are looking to improve their mental health, becoming the best versions of themselves.

Hi. I'm Bill. I've been working in this field since 2003 treating adults experiencing symptoms related to the anxiety disorders, depressed mood, identity and self-concept difficulties, relationship problems, life-transition difficulties, and traumatic memories. These difficulties along with other related topics that may surface during a therapy session. My therapy approach is quite straightforward, collaborative, and non-judgmental. It's structured to help you develop a healthier and happier life. We begin by identifying the circumstances that prompted you to seek therapy. Then I help you to develop skills and solutions tailored for you to help you move forward toward that healthier life. It's a collaborative approach. You and I work together through this process. From this perspective, listening is the most-important part of communication. When I genuinely listen to your experiences and concerns without judgment or distraction, I can respond appropriately to your concerns. "Right Speech begins with Right Listening." I am Jeff, like it says on this page. I love games of all kinds and dogs of all kinds. I sit crosslegged on chairs when I can and enjoy kneading dough for baking. I'm verbose and use words as if they were legos. I have worked in hospitals, community mental health centers, a retirement home and now I am content to be in private practice. I have experience with crises, sudden life transitions and choices that seem impossible to come back from. I'm familiar with being awkward and have experience being the outcast. I became a therapist because there were many times earlier in my life where I needed support and guidance from someone who could understand me without being judgmental or controlling. Being a strange enough person already, I never quite found someone empathetic towards my situation until meeting my first therapist - a literally life changing experience. Even with almost 10 years as a therapist, I'm certainly not claiming that I'll change your life as a guarantee just because of who I am - a therapist helped me see that so much change came about by my own efforts over the years, change that you can also be empowered to pursue. I am the sort of person that will work in your interest, work for your health when it feels like illness gets in the way. If you happen to be someone or know someone that often puts others before themselves at the expense of wants and needs for themselves, then you may know me pretty well already. Transparently, I am not using AI in any form to write anything you read here about myself or my methods.

I’m a husband and dad to three boys (ages 16, 13 and 8), and family is a huge part of my life. We live on a 20-acre homestead where we raise chickens, goats, pigs, and cows, and we spend a lot of time in the garden. Life on the farm keeps me grounded and reminds me daily of the value of patience, hard work, and slowing down to enjoy what really matters. Faith and community are also central for me. I’m actively involved in my church, and I see my work as an extension of that calling to walk alongside others. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial streak. Alongside my therapy work, I am starting a tech start-up, I’ve run an online store, and I even dabble in Bitcoin mining. I enjoy the challenge of building things from the ground up and thinking outside the box. I also read a lot, and my libertarian leanings have been shaped by writers like Murray Rothbard. The conservative/libertarian focus on freedom, personal responsibility and low time preference connects deeply with how I approach life and therapy: we’re at our best when we are free to live with responsibility in society, own our choices, and pursue truth apart from coercion. When it comes to therapy itself, I integrate my faith with practical, proven methods. I use Christian Counseling, CBT, Reality Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and the Gottman Method to help people grow emotionally, spiritually, and relationally. My goal is to give you a space where your values are respected, your faith is honored, and you feel equipped to face life’s challenges with hope and clarity. If you’re looking for a therapist who understands the importance of faith, family, freedom, and practical tools for change, I’d love to walk with you on your journey.

Hello! My name is Max Croteau and I have had the pleasure of being a licensed professional counselor for almost 10 years now. In this time, I have been able to mold my style of understanding, accepting while also challenging and motivational into a successful model of growth and change for those who choose to work with me. I truly am a believer that therapy can sometimes be a side-by-side process, or it can be a process where one guides and the other follows, but ultimately the choice is up to you. I don’t want you to live a life that I tell you to live. I want to help you find a life that is truly a genuine fit for yourself and one that you can see yourself living without even having to think about it. I’ve specialized in addiction, OCD, trauma therapy, family and couples counseling and various other topics in the world of mental health. One important factor that I have found is that each person has their own individual story and their journey will be just as individualized. No matter how similar, we are all different. A cookie cutter approach to the rest of your life is not something that you will get from me. I will truly meet you where you are and work with you every step of the way to achieve the success that you are looking for. I always guarantee every person I work with that therapy may not be easy, but in the end, it will be incredibly worthwhile. I’d love to start and/or continue that journey. Growth has no final destination, just the journey. It’s up to you what path you’d like to take.

My name is MaryAnn Emmerling and I have been a therapist for many years, working with adults who have a variety of emotional symptoms. My experience includes helping people with trauma, anxiety and panic, depression, relationships as well as childhood abuse. I also have experience with family issues, work stress and relationship conflicts. I have a master’s degree in counseling, am licensed and I am also a Nationally Certified Counselor. I also authored a self-help book on anxiety and panic. Taking care of your emotional health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Sometimes there is a barrier when someone considers therapy because they feel self conscious or fearful about what it means to be in therapy, so they suffer unnecessarily. Taking that first step is not easy. But clients have told me that the healing process began when they took that first step. Being heard and supported is vital. No one should have to cope alone. The type of therapy I offer depends on your own individual needs. Often called Eclectic or Integrative, this type of therapy is tailored to your specific issues. Let's work together to find the answers you need to live a better life!

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Pennsylvania rather than a city like Philadelphia?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Pennsylvania from Pittsburgh to Scranton! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Pennsylvania.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD)?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD), is filtering therapists in Pennsylvania that work with patients with similar concerns.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
