Feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and exhausted constantly? Isolated and alone because you don’t want to burden your friends or family with your problems? Or maybe you don’t know quite how to name why you feel this way or how to talk about it. Well, there is good news - therapy is the place to explore these challenging thoughts and feelings. I’ve worked in mental health since 2016, helping people of all ages, backgrounds, and challenges. I approach mental health challenges with a holistic mindset to help identify what we can change, inside of our control, and increase resilience. Depression, anxiety, ADHD, and trauma are a few examples of mental health struggles that impact how we live and experience the world. However, the opposite is also true! Because our lifestyles can influence our ability to tolerate stress and feel good about ourselves. My job as a therapist is to help you identify what is working, and what isn't working, and what we can do about it. I believe in us working as a team and supporting you in achieving your goals, so you can reconnect with your inner strength, resilience, and confidence to manage life's challenging ebbs and flows. Why choose me? Well, to help me feel less like a stranger, here is more detail about my background: My M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is from Lenoir Rhyne University's Graduate Center of Asheville, NC in Dec. 2020. I hold a B.S. in Psychology from Longwood University in Farmville, VA. I'm a Qualified Mental Health Professional with 5.5 years of direct care experience with teens in residential treatment. My graduate internship was community & school-based outpatient therapy with Access Family Services. August 2021 to March 2024, I was an outpatient therapist, in-person and virtual, with the center for emotional health.

Hello, and welcome. I am Dr. Samuel Hickson, PhD, LCSW, a licensed psychotherapist, neuropsychotherapist, clinical researcher, educator, and healthcare consultant dedicated to providing evidence-based psychotherapy for adults. My practice is built on the belief that healing begins with understanding ourselves, rebuilding trust, and developing the resilience needed to navigate life's challenges with confidence and purpose. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, burnout, healthcare-related stress, identity transitions, chronic illness adjustment, grief, and major life changes. My therapeutic approach integrates neuropsychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), narrative therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, and strengths-based practices to create individualized treatment plans that are both compassionate and grounded in scientific research. My professional background extends beyond traditional psychotherapy. With over 14 years of healthcare experience, a PhD in Human Behavior, an MBA focused on Corporate Social Responsibility, and extensive work in clinical research and behavioral health, I bring a multidisciplinary perspective that bridges neuroscience, psychology, healthcare systems, and organizational well-being. This allows me to understand not only the emotional challenges my clients face but also the broader healthcare, workplace, and life circumstances that influence mental health. In addition to psychotherapy, I provide professional consultation in risk management, clinical documentation, quality improvement, standards of care, and behavioral health operations for healthcare organizations and private practices. Whether you are seeking support during a difficult transition or looking to strengthen resilience and reconnect with your values, my goal is to provide a collaborative, respectful, and affirming therapeutic environment where meaningful, lasting change can occur. I welcome the opportunity to partner with you on your journey toward growth, healing, and living a more fulfilling life.

In life, we all move through peaks and valleys. While the high points can feel expansive and full of possibility, the valleys often feel isolating, overwhelming, or unclear. My work centers on helping clients feel less alone in those difficult moments and more empowered to navigate them with confidence, clarity, and self‑compassion. I believe that our deepest aspirations—love, peace, fulfillment, and meaningful connection—begin with the relationship we build with ourselves. As we strengthen that inner foundation, we naturally create healthier, more authentic relationships with others. Therapy becomes a space where this transformation can unfold with intention and support. In my practice, I walk alongside my clients with a grounded, non‑judgmental, and compassionate presence. My first priority is to listen deeply. I want to understand what matters most to you, what you’re carrying, and how your experiences have shaped the way you move through the world. I strive to ensure you feel genuinely seen and heard from the very beginning, because healing grows from a foundation of trust and authentic connection. Together, we explore your inner landscape—your strengths, your patterns, your hopes, and the parts of you that may feel stuck or unheard. Through this collaborative process, you can begin to reconnect with your sense of self, develop healthier emotional habits, and move toward a life that feels more aligned and fulfilling. If you’re ready to step into a space where you don’t have to navigate the valleys alone, I’m here to walk with you.

I also integrate alternative and mind body methods that expand healing beyond traditional talk therapy, supporting both emotional and physiological well-being. I practice from an intersectional perspective, recognizing that our identities; race, gender, sexuality, neurotype, ability, culture, and lived experience intersect to shape how we move through the world and how the world responds to us. Healing requires honoring all of those parts. I believe neurodivergence is not something to be fixed, but understood, supported, and celebrated. Hi, I’m Sheena Burden, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and I’m truly glad you’re here. Reaching out for support takes courage, and I honor the step you’re taking. My heart for this work comes from years of walking alongside individuals and families facing overwhelming moments, both in private practice and throughout more than 13 years in hospital care management. Those experiences have taught me that people don’t just need tools — they need compassion, safety, and someone who genuinely cares. In our sessions, you will find a space where you can slow down, breathe, and be fully seen without judgment. I believe healing happens when we feel supported and understood, and my goal is to meet you with warmth, patience, and deep respect for your lived experience. For clients who desire faith‑based support, I also offer Christian counseling, integrating spiritual encouragement and emotional care in a way that feels comforting, not pressured. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, stress, grief, health challenges, or simply feeling lost, we’ll work together to uncover your strengths, clarify your values, and create gentle, meaningful steps toward the life you want. They may have sought therapy in the past and have become disillusioned, for whatever reason. The foundation of therapy is the therapeutic alliance. Call me Ben! I've been in private practice for 5 years and the mental health field at-large for close to a decade. I'm a big advocate for mindfulness (and ACT) and how it can be used alongside and incorporated into the therapeutic relationship to make tremendous strides in addressing one's mental health. I live in Asheville, North Carolina with my wife and our two cats. I love to go hiking and kayaking, I own a record store where I also work, and love a good gaming session with my friends.

For most of my adult life, I have had the privilege of helping individuals and families navigate challenges, make meaningful changes, and move forward in their lives. Along the way, life has happened to me, too. I have experienced loss, grief, life transitions, and family conflict, and I understand that sometimes even the strongest among us need support finding our way through difficult seasons. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I bring life experiences, professional training, and a genuine understanding of how complex life can be. I work with adults of all ages who are ready for something to change but may not be quite sure where to begin. My approach is down-to-earth, curious, compassionate, and focused on making our time together meaningful or forward focused.

You deserve support, and if you are coming with your partner , you both do, no matter how hard the road ahead may seem. You need someone that will strive to understand you, but commit to supporting you in moving towards change that feels meaningful. While I will never pretend to know your exact pain, I do find that my experience juggling life as a parent, a partner, and in demanding careers such as corporate leadership and skilled trades have often helped me find a traction point to connect with you , so I can support you.

Hi, my name is Eva. I have been practicing in the mental health and substance-abuse field for almost 30 years and during that time I have come to learn a lot about what it takes to help a person move from one place to another and it has also taught me how to move from one place to another so that I too can live my best life . I believe that we all need help from time to time and someone to help us see clearly when we have difficulty seeing things clearly ourselves. My best practice of therapy is being eclectic, which means in simple terms that I use whatever technique I need to to reach my client wherever they are at. This includes all best practices that are evidence-based to work with women, young adults, men and children who all have a common need to feel heard and supported. I specialize in a variety of treatment modalities that include trauma, substance abuse, anxiety/ depression, and other mood/mental disorders, and I desire to help all my clients improve their current life situation so that they can begin to live their best lives.

I am licensed as a social worker as well as an addiction specialist. My ideal client is struggling to understand how substance use and misuse is effecting their life.Maybe they are questioning their own use, or that of their partner, children, or they grew up with alcoholics in the household. I also love working with people with depression and anxiety who want to examine where they are at and where they might want to go. I love thinking outside the box and encouraging new ways of seeing the world and its possibilities.

Frequently asked questions

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in North Carolina. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across North Carolina from Raleigh to Greensboro! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in North Carolina.

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
