Becky Streem
Hello. I'm Becky. I am a seasoned psychotherapist having been in practice for almost 40 years. Over the years, I have worked with individuals, couples, and families. Since the pandemic, my work has been focused on caregiver burnout. Having worked in a hospital setting for almost 20 years, I have a special interest in working with healthcare professionals.
First session
The first therapy session is a gathering of information. My clients can expect me to be collaborative in establishing goals of therapy. I want my clients to feel relaxed and engaged in the process as to identifying the goals of treatment and the cadence as to when and how often we meet.
Strengths
I bring a sense of authenticity and humor to my work. I see my clients through a holistic view by appreciating how issues of diversity and political climate effects our mental health
Ideal clients
I am comfortable working with all stages of life. This could be clients entering their first year of college or post retirement (life transitions). I work with clients who struggle with substance use- alcohol, drugs, and compulsive overeating. Knowledgable about 12 step programs. Yet, also comfortable with clients who use marijuana medicinally. I enjoy working with clients in the healthcare profession, LGBTQ clients, and people who struggle with the current political climate.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy (talk therapy) that helps you notice and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. It focuses on how your thoughts influence how you feel and behave. In my work with clients, we work collaboratively to search for triggers that might lead to feelings of shame and self-doubt. By teaching practical skills, clients work through old negative messages that have kept them stuck and learn new ways to cope through life's challenges.
Gender-affirming therapy
As a member of the LGBTQ community, I have worked with many clients who identify as trans and non-binary. My work is client-centered. I provide a safe place to talk about transitioning from both social and medical aspects. Issues include self-acceptance; coming out to family, friends, and colleagues; finding resources and support in your community; and mental health challenges associated with gender dysphoria.
