Hello!!! I'm John Ely--formally, John N. Ely, Ph.D., LPC--informally, "John" or "Doc". I'm an old man--76 years old--with a doctorate in counseling from Marquette University granted in 1980 and somewhat over forty years of experience as a therapy provider, supervisor, trainer and director. I retired from same about ten years ago but have continued since in a small, limited telepractice (I live in a very remote small community in Mammoth, AZ, a former mining town for what was then Phelps-Dodge and is now Freeport-McMorAn) which remains the main source of employment of its residents). I would best describe myself as a general practitioner but with somewhat of a specialty in assisting fellow human beings who are in distress, desire help reducing it and desire a collaborative partnership in doing so.

Born and raised in Arizona. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Phoenix. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Learning and Pedagogy from Northern Arizona University and my Masters of Social Work from Arizona State University. I’m a practitioner who believes healing doesn’t have to feel heavy all the time. I’m deeply curious about people, their stories, their patterns, and the small moments that shape who they are. I became a therapist because I’ve always been drawn to the spaces where people get real. I saw how powerful it can be when someone feels truly seen, heard, not fixed, not judged, just understood. Therapy, to me, is a collaborative process: a place to unburden yourself and release what’s been weighing on you. Therapy is a place to reconnect with yourself and build tools that actually fit your life. Outside the therapy space, I’m someone who appreciates the little things like spending time with family and friends around the dinner table, good coffee, thoughtful books, and finding joy in everyday moments. I bring that same grounded, human approach into my work.

My name is Thomas Barhorst, and I started counseling in 2004. In addition to having a small private practice shortly after I received my Missouri license in 2007; I have worked as a K-12 school counselor, in substance use treatment, in a residential treatment setting, in a community mental health agency, helping individuals with disabilities transition into the workforce, and helping graduate students manage stress in their professional programs (i.e. medical school, dental school, etc.). Recently, I have begun providing telehealth therapy after obtaining licensure in Arizona and California. Outside of work, spending time with family and friends is important to me. I also enjoy stories, laughing, listening to stand-up comedy, cooking, playing sports like wallyball and ultimate frisbee on a non-competitive level, watching film noir and psychological thrillers, recently had the opportunity to take my car to a racetrack, and have played bass guitar in a rock band.

A better life is here for you. I'm Lorelei, a licensed therapist and EMDR specialist who helps individuals and couples get unstuck and build meaningful lives. Anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, self-doubt, relationship struggles — these don't have to define you. Neither does that quiet feeling of drifting through life without purpose or direction. Therapy with me is a safe space where your truth is heard. That alone can be healing. I listen deeply and give you practical tools that actually work. You'll leave sessions feeling grounded, clearer, and excited about what's ahead. You deserve the full life you were meant to live. In couples work, I help you escape the roommates syndrome and actually enjoy each other again. There was a reason you chose each other — sometimes you just need help finding your way back. You may even have mixed feelings about whether you should stay. Let's explore that together. I also offer a pre-marital program for couples who want to start right. Life can feel heavy, lonely, and confusing — even when it looks fine from the outside. If you're stuck, anxious, constantly stressed, or just going through the motions, I want you to know that's not the whole story of who you are. You don't have to figure this out alone, and you don't have to stay here. Therapy takes courage, but it works. Let's talk.

Hi, I'm Lucas, and I'm really glad you're here. The searching can get annoying, trust me, I know. I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 8 years of experience in addiction and mental health, including directing an Intensive Outpatient Program. I graduated from Arizona State University with a Master's in Social Work in 2023. I'm not the "perfect expert" type. I'd rather be the person in your corner who shows up fully, celebrates your progress, and says the hard things when they need to be said. I'm warm and genuine; I bring real energy to every session, yes, even through a screen, and I practice what I teach because mental health is something we all work at. Expect me to be direct, and don't be surprised if I send you home with "homework." Growth happens in the everyday moments, not just the hour we spend together. My job is simple: help you reconnect with your strengths, build real confidence, and move toward the life you actually want. You're worth that work. Let's get started.

Hello, Thank you for reviewing my profile. Briefly; I am Licensed Naturopathic Doctor, a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor I work with adult professional women dealing with anxiety, depression, past unresolved trauma, grief, stress and relationship issues. My philosophy is that we need positive human beings in our lives, to 'see' us and bear witness to our lives. In order for us to be fully human, we need at least one supportive individual who validates the part of us that needs healing. We need meaningful experiences to help us navigate this journey called life. My training as a Naturopathic Doctor affords me a lens to also consider, incorporate and integrate diet & lifestyle practices for your overall well-being. So, if you are tired of being tired, anxious, sad, depressed and you're just going through the motions, feeling stuck in dysfunctional patterns that drain you; AND you are willing to do the work to get well, then you need skilled, compassionate support to help you get unstuck and get your life back on track, so that you can experience purposeful living. As our paths intersect her, I start with the intention that you to "prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers" 3 John 2.

My name is Romy Rodriguez and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I have worked with various populations with mental health and substance abuse struggles. I also provided Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to adolescents and their families who were living in homeless shelters and were in the court system. I have also worked with women with Post-Partum depression and struggling with substance abuse. Two of the modalities that I work with are Brainspotting and EMDR. Brainspotting focuses on identifying specific eye positions (“brainspots”) that connect to unprocessed material in the brain. By maintaining focused attention on these spots, clients are able to access, process, and resolve underlying issues at a deeper neurological level. This approach is especially effective for trauma, anxiety, and emotional regulation, allowing for profound healing in a safe, attuned, and client-centered space. I also specialize in EMDR. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help clients process and heal from trauma, distressing memories, and negative beliefs. As an EMDR-trained therapist, I guide clients through structured phases that use bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements) to help the brain reprocess stuck or overwhelming experiences. This allows painful memories to lose their intensity and supports the development of more adaptive, empowering beliefs. EMDR is highly effective for trauma, anxiety, and other emotional challenges, offering deep and lasting relief in a safe, supportive, and client-centered environment.

I’m a warm, down-to-earth therapist who believes that feeling safe, understood, and genuinely supported is the foundation for meaningful change. With over 15 years of experience across schools, hospitals, crisis settings, and community-based care, I’ve had the privilege of working with people at many different stages of life—from teens navigating overwhelming emotions to adults facing complex life challenges. My background as both a counselor and school social worker has given me a deep understanding of how early experiences, family dynamics, and life transitions shape who we are. I’ve supported students and families through anxiety, emotional struggles, and difficult situations, and I carry that same patience, empathy, and advocacy into my work with all clients. I’ve also worked in high-intensity environments—including crisis settings, alongside law enforcement, in hospitals, and with veterans, survivors of trauma and domestic violence, and individuals in eating disorder treatment. Because of this, I’m comfortable supporting clients who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure where to start. You don’t have to have everything figured out to begin. In our work together, I focus on creating a space where you can be yourself without fear of judgment. I balance practical tools and coping strategies with deeper exploration, helping you not only manage what you’re going through, but also understand it. My approach is collaborative, supportive, and tailored to you—whether you’re looking for structure, insight, or simply a place to feel heard. Reaching out for therapy can be hard, but you don’t have to do it alone. My goal is to help you feel more grounded, more confident, and more in control of your life.

Hi, my name is Vienna Aslanian, and I have been practicing as a licensed therapist since the beginning of 2017. I chose to become a therapist after practicing in the field of social work with children and families. Witnessing the trauma and the way that trauma impacted those individual lives caused me to develop an interest in and concern for individuals struggling with PTSD and childhood trauma. Seeing the intergenerational struggles and hearing people's personal stories on the matter made me interested in the field of therapy. I have always enjoyed listening to people's stories and making a genuine connection with someone. I believe in the healing power of therapy and the importance of the therapeutic relationship. I believe in the importance of active listening and supportive guidance. I believe in the importance of empathy and nonjudgment; I value making you feel cared about and understood. I hold myself to high expectations regarding reliability and consistency in order to provide the best support and care possible. I attend training regularly on the best and most effective practices/therapeutic modalities.

Hi! I’m Renee. I’m a clinically licensed social worker, but more importantly, I’m someone who believes that no matter how stuck or heavy things feel right now, you already possess the inner tools to heal. My path to this work was driven by a deep value for human resilience; I’ve always been drawn to the stories we tell ourselves and how, with the right support, we can rewrite them. In our sessions, you won't feel like a case file or a list of symptoms. Clients often tell me after our first meeting that they finally felt heard—not just listened to. I aim to create a space that feels like a deep breath: safe, non-judgmental, and focused entirely on you. While I use trauma-informed and cognitive-based tools, I don't just "apply" them to you. Instead, we work together to uncover your existing strengths and use them as the foundation for your recovery. I view the healing process as a collaborative journey of empowerment. It isn’t about "fixing" what’s broken, but about reclaiming the parts of yourself that may have been lost to life’s challenges. My approach is warm and direct; I’m here to be your guide and your loudest cheerleader as you transform. Outside of the therapy room, I carry these same values of authenticity and connection into my own life, believing that we are all constantly growing. I would be honored to walk alongside you as you discover just how capable of healing you truly are.

My practice is eclectic and borrows from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive orientations. I believe that each person’s rich subjective experience is fundamentally unique. In my clinical work, I strive to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can feel welcome in expressing yourself fully, working at a pace that feels comfortable for you. My style is relational and interactive, and tools used in treatment vary according to the individual situation. These may include exploration and expression of thoughts and feelings, expanding skills in areas such as stress coping, communication, boundary setting, providing support in problem-solving, or some combination of these. I am non-directive in my approach, operating from a person-centered lens. I work with a range of topics including life stressors, relationship difficulties, as well as mood and anxiety disorders. "Psychoanalytic therapy requires of the therapist a degree of intelligence, a degree of professional knowledge and skill, a capacity for empathic attunement with another, a willingness to immerse ourselves in another person’s private, subjective world, an absolutely ruthless willingness to examine ourselves, and for want of a better word, humanity. Of all the qualities that go into the making of a psychotherapist, it is this last and most ineffable quality that may ultimately carry the day.” Jonathan Shedler, That was then; this is now

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for ten years now. You will always know yourself better than I can or will. From a philosophical and theoretical standpoint. I am overwhelming more of an attachment theorist, and have been known to use existentialism from time to time to help make sense of something. I guess the question that remains though is; can a butterfly flap it's wings in Brazil and cause a or tornado in Kentucky, or are we all simply just products of our childhood and mirrors of our parents traumas? The duality of life. Attachment Theory vs. Chaos Theory. Both have value. I digress. My goal is to provide a petridish in which you can explore your self. Safe. Contained. Yet completely in your control. The paradox being, you likely already have what you need. I'll sit with you while you find it. I can give you my clinical opinion, or diagnosis, and recommendations along the way as well if you'd like that. I can just sit and listen. I can play devils advocate. My job is to listen, empower, observe, and provide feedback when requested.

My passion for therapy is rooted in a deep desire to connect with others. Growing up in a family rich in cultural diversity, I have had the privilege of hearing stories from relatives of various backgrounds, which sparked my curiosity and appreciation for different perspectives. This experience has inspired me to continually learn about others—their thoughts, motivations, and unique journeys. I believe my purpose is to support clients as they strive to reach their fullest potential. For me, being a therapist means walking alongside individuals, couples, and families as they navigate challenges and embrace growth. It is both an honor and a privilege to serve my community in this meaningful way.

I have been a behavioral health counselor for over 20 years. My start in this profession came from my career as an educator in middle and high schools. The need for therapeutic counseling was great and I extended my education to earn an MA in Educational Counseling and then completed supervised therapy complete my license as a Professional Counselor. My experience is therapy and in raising our family has taught me that individuals generally know what they need to do to make significant behavior changes. What we almost always need is accurate information and supportive relationships. Relationships does not always mean family members. The circle of support comes from counselors, teachers, neighbors and friends. I try to be a part of the positive support system for all of my clients. A bit about my life in Arizona: Raising our children in a rural community has been one of the best decisions we have made as parents. All of our children were involved in 4H and sports. They have gone on to raise amazing children and we are proud of their accomplishments. My husband and I are enjoying our retirement and I work hard to manage my counseling practice so that we have time for coffee on the back porch and travel to visit our family.

Hello! Congratulations on taking this step toward living a happier and more meaningful life! It takes courage! I received a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy in 1999 at Auburn University in Alabama and have been providing care since then. I've worked as a full-time clinician, mentored and provided clinical supervision to new professionals and also oversaw a community behavioral health center for more than a decade as the clinical director. Most recently, I provided military and family life counseling at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson before opening a full-time private practice. An important goal of mine is to help you feel comfortable and confident that counseling is a safe place. I operate from a position of compassion and empathy. Together we will work through the issues you're struggling with. I do not take the stance that I'm the expert on your life but instead will guide you through the change process at your own pace and readiness.

My last 18 years have involved serving military Veterans in civilian readjustment, trauma processing and career preparation. Helping people solve their life problems and seek future-forward opportunities for growth is my true goal. Individuals and couples seeking some sort of help and guidance about their dilemmas and challenges may find my broad, worldly experience very beneficial.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Arizona rather than a city like Phoenix?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in Arizona. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Arizona from Tucson to Mesa! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Arizona.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What happens during the first therapy session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
