If you are here, then that means that you are ready and motivated to make some changes in your life. Seeking help can sometimes be tough, which is why I believe that we all experience things in our life that goes beyond our ability to cope and when that happens we need a little more assistance. As a licensed professional counselor, my ultimate goal is to first normalize seeking assistance by decreasing the stigma on mental health. In doing so, my goal is to assist individuals in their healing process, to empower individuals to become the best version of themselves and to help individuals to see that life is completely what you make it. My preference for treatment is to utilize a trauma-informed approach in addition to CBT, EMDR and Choice/Reality Therapy.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in practice for over 15 years, I have worked with clients that have extensive levels of concerns including but not limited to depression, anxiety, trauma, social and interpersonal relationship challenges not to exclude family discord. I have been adaptable to working in many different settings. I believe the approach of meeting my client where they are is a grounding principle for my therapeutic style. Although not always in person, the distance will never be seen as a distraction. I obtained my master’s degree from Florida State University, but faced many challenges with that. Some struggles in life peak during adolescence and I was no stranger to that. Transitions were not my friend, I had to overcome many relational, financial, and educational difficulties that grew me to understanding personal struggles. I believe in a client-centered approach as all clients are the experts on what works best for them and the challenges that they continue to face. I strive to provide an environment that is non-judgmental and accepting of where you are in your process while helping you get to where you want to be. Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I assist clients in exploring relationships among thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to aid in discovering dysfunctional thought patterns leading to self-destructive behaviors and beliefs. I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) which is a modality that assist in how trauma is seen and processed. I have worked the better part of my career assisting in trauma processing, clients have been sexually abused, physically abused, or have suffered from significant loss. I believe counseling is a journey towards healing. If you are willing to allow me on this journey with you to master any conflict in your life, I am ready when you are!

I truly saw the need for more mental health professionals in my community when I lost my father in 2006. Since that day, I began my journey of understanding the mind and how it works. We go through many major life transitions such as breakups, divorce, having children, new professions, loss of income, moving, pandemic stress and more. Most do not realize just how traumatic these seemingly “normal” events are to us at times. I am here to help you if you feel overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, angry or confused concerning anything that has been thrown at you in your life. If you feel that what you are dealing with is too much to handle on your own, please reach out to me. We cannot stop this cycle of numbing or ignoring mental health issues in our world if we do not start within. As a mental health advocate, I am here for you. I have seen the impact of a lack of relatable and accessible mental health programs and providers. I am here to be the bridge and get you the solutions, support, and guidance you need.

I've been providing sex therapy for the majority of this time as well as train and supervise other sex therapists in training. My approach is direct and I don't often sugar coat things. If I see or hear something of importance or relevance, I am going to mention it to see if this something we need further explore together. I'm trained as a systems therapist and often describe myself as "an engineer for humans and relationships." I'm trained to identify and observe patterns in clients and their relationships and help them create change by changing the patterns and then experience a paradigm or mindset shift. As systems therapist, I am not often gathering a bunch of historical information at the start of our work. At times, this information is not always needed, and when it is, we can discuss it down the road. Even with my trauma modalities, I don't often have clients retell all of their traumas; instead, we focus on what is not working for them and address the traumas that are unprocessed or unresolved. Due to insurance limitations, I am only able to see couples, relational or family clients at a self pay rate.

I’m Amanda Gilchrist, a licensed professional counselor who specializes in helping individuals navigate depression, anxiety, life transitions, and trauma. My approach is person-centered, meaning I focus on you—your story, your needs, and your goals—and tailor therapy to fit where you are and where you want to go. I earned my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and have worked across both public and private sectors in South Carolina, supporting people through crisis response, trauma-informed care, care coordination, and behavioral health integration. Those experiences shaped my passion for creating safe spaces where people can heal, grow, and rediscover their sense of purpose. Today, I bring that same dedication into private practice, walking alongside clients as they move toward hope and lasting change. Specialties: Trauma, EMDR, and Women’s Issues

“My goal is to work together to create positive change by offering a safe and warm environment for clients to learn, heal, and grow.” Whether searching for a counselor for yourself or your child, I enjoy working with clients of all ages and considers it a privilege to journey beside each client as they experience life transitions, anxiety, OCD, relationship issues, school related issues or learning differences, or traumatic experiences. My philosophy is strength-based, whether working with a child who is struggling emotionally and may benefit from play therapy or an adult who prefers to work collaboratively through a cognitive-behavioral approach or a trauma focused approach. I also has specific, advanced training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) from EMDRIA, providing an evidenced-based framework to help individuals experience healing from traumatic events.

As a husband and father of five, I deeply understand the joys and challenges of family life. My journey to becoming a counselor was a personal one, born from a desire to help others navigate life's complexities. While my studies as a mechanical engineer instilled in me a strong work ethic and problem-solving skills, I discovered a deeper calling in helping people find their way. I believe in a collaborative approach, where I actively listen to understand your unique needs and challenges. Drawing on a diverse range of therapeutic techniques, I strive to provide practical and effective solutions that empower you to live a more fulfilling life. Whether you're facing individual struggles, relationship difficulties, or family challenges, I am committed to walking alongside you on your journey of growth and healing.

I am a dedicated and caring Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified EMDR Trauma Therapist, and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional in the States of Georgia and New York, with over 15 years of clinical experience in the mental health field. I specialize in the treatment of trauma, grief and loss, mood disorders, personality disorders and family relationships. I am fully multilingual and offer therapy in English, Spanish and Portuguese. I am originally from the Dominican Republic where I first graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology. From an early age I was called into the mental health field in a society where mental illness was stigmatized and a forbidden topic. This calling and life mission led me to spending decades studying Neurosciences, Psychology and Trauma Treatment. I hold a Master of Science degree in Neurosciences and a Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, as well as Certifications in Trauma Treatment and advanced trainings in EMDR Therapy, IFS therapy, Contextual Therapy, among others . Understanding the human experience with trauma, pain and loss and witnessing how through therapy healing is possible, has been the seal of a lifelong legacy. As a psychotherapist I practice a holistic and integrative approach and work mainly from a psychodynamic, trauma informed and neuroscientific and systemic perspective, based on the evidence of how trauma impacts the body and brain, and the awareness that in order to create lasting change and heal trauma wounds we must create insight and integrate past and present while establishing a secure connection with ourselves and in relationship with our significant others. It is now my honor to be your therapist. As your therapist it is my goal to guide you through your journey of internal growth and lasting healing.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Georgia rather than a city like Atlanta?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Georgia from Athens to Savannah! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Georgia.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
