Hello, I am Shaqueena. Are you tired of being tired? Do you feel that no one understands your situation or that no one can relate? Are you unsure if therapy is right for you? If you are here, then that means that you are ready and motivated to make some changes in your life. Seeking help can sometimes be tough, which is why I believe that we all experience things in our life that goes beyond our ability to cope and when that happens we need a little more assistance. As a licensed professional counselor, my ultimate goal is to first normalize seeking assistance by decreasing the stigma on mental health. In doing so, my goal is to assist individuals in their healing process, to empower individuals to become the best version of themselves and to help individuals to see that life is completely what you make it. My preference for treatment is to utilize a trauma-informed approach in addition to CBT, EMDR and Choice/Reality Therapy.
The first session is considered a "get a feel of each other" session. It is very important for Clients to feel some sort of connection with their therapist, it helps with treatment retention and allows for a smoother relationship which in turn helps to foster behavior change quicker. So, the first session may feel a lot like Q & A.
Trauma and addiction are my strengths, however, with treating individuals dealing with either of those, there are multiple components to be addressed which include: emotional regulation, behavioral characteristics, cognitive restructuring, coping skills, relaxation strategies, interpersonal relationships, communication skills, life skills and much more.
CBT is used to challenge irrational thoughts and emotions. Teach individuals to acknowledge and understand the link between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Interventions include cognitive restructuring or reframing, guided discovery, exposure therapy, journaling and thought records, activity scheduling and behavior activation, behavioral experiments, relaxation and stress reduction techniques, role playing, and successive approximation.
“Dialectical” means combining opposite ideas. DBT focuses on helping people accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors, as well as helping them learn to change their lives, including their unhelpful behaviors. Interventions include core mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an eight-phase psychotherapy approach that helps people recover from trauma without having to talk at length about the traumatic experience(s).
