I define the process of therapy as a temporary, guided journey of healthy changes, in a judgement free zone. The other main element that specifically differentiates the process of therapy is confidentiality. Confidentiality can be thought of as a " steel vault" containing anything and everything you tell me in our sessions. It remains locked in your vault; and only you have the combination. There are exceptions to confidentiality that we'll discuss during out first session. I combine the two most effective treatment models that have been proven empirically that these models give a person a "system of change." Meaning these models of therapy have been studied or researched; and their effectiveness data, have been submitted and published in the professional literature over many decades. The first model that's referred to as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) examines the powerful domino effect between our thoughts, feelings and behavior choice patterns of the individual seeking therapy. The other model I practice examines the domains of the biological origins of feelings and behaviors, and how this domain interacts with the internal way we think of ourselves, that impacts the important relationships in our lives, inside and outside of our family. Like the different trails we can explore in the world, there are different challenges that we may encounter as individuals and families in life. For some, the mountain in their life may be adjusting to transitions in life, grief, or post-divorce, or the trail may challenge them to develop coping skills to manage the overwhelming feelings of anxiety, depression, or trauma. Other’s journeys may be shorter, needing to identify their strengths they can use to meet their challenges in life. On these varied trails, I have enjoyed walking alongside my clients and/or their families to while charting a path towards their goals in counseling. While my counseling approach is eclectic, drawing from strength-based, attachment theory, and solution-focused modalities, I rely on a foundation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy in my work with clients.

I have been working in mental health for 14 years. Working with my clients and supporting my clients has been a privilege and such a joy. I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree in 2008 from Southern Arkansas University. In 2012, I pursued a Masters of Science in Addiction Counseling and in 2014 I received a Masters of Science in Professional Counseling. Most recently I obtained a Post Masters Certification in Marriage and Family Counseling.

My name is Josalynn Cartagena and I am an LPC. I graduated from CA-CREP accredited Sam Houston State University in 2018 in school counseling. After graduating, I began working in public education as a middle and high school counselor. I also worked for a tutoring company doing behavioral coaching for youth and for another private practice seeing clients of all ages. In 2023, I started my own bilingual virtual private practice, Sol Shines On, PLLC to help people find hope and feel valued, heard and understood to discover a better outcome for their life and future. I use the modalities of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), Person Centered Theory and EMDR to process negative memories. I am constantly striving to grow myself with continued education, certifications and specialties to expand my knowledge as a counselor in ways I can continue to help you grow.
