Hi! I'm Courtney. Therapy is a collaborative journey. I believe in holding space for your story while we work together on achieving your goals. When you come to a therapy session, I hope that you can come as you are, and be your authentic self. The therapeutic relationship is built on trust and asks clients to practice vulnerability in order to examine those parts of us that are no longer serving us. Through this work, we can then discover practical tools that we can use to grow and overcome our biggest challenges. My approach combines an empathic client-centered outlook, informed by research and various evidence-based practices, to help clients feel validated and empowered as they work towards their behavioral goals. I truly enjoy helping individuals through their everyday challenges, childhood memories, trauma, parenting, and life transitions. I use a combination of strength-based, behavioral, and cognitive interventions to help clients become present, focused, and skillful. Throughout my years of practice, I have worked with a diverse population of clients. I have worked closely with families and children in community mental health, adults in more structured short-term therapy, adolescents in the school setting, as well as those struggling with substance abuse. I have had the opportunity to be trained in multiple evidence-based practices, which aligns with my desire to bring research-based treatments into my work. We are all unique and one style of treatment does not fit everyone. My training has given me the tools and knowledge needed to create specialized treatment plans for each individual that I work with.

I am passionate about creating a safe space for my clients to throw it all out on the table, be met with compassion and validation and begin to piece together what they want to keep and what they want to toss. I am here to help you sift through the pieces of you that you know but also become curious about the parts of yourself that you do not know. During that process, you can begin to find power in your choices and practice the art of being able to decide for yourself who it is you want to be. The stories you have come to believe about yourself are worth exploring and together, we can build a relationship where I will challenge those beliefs with you and assist you in building confidence to shift into your most authentic and understood self.

Hello, I was born and raised in Stockton, California. I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and in 1997, after 25 yeas of service, I retired from the Marine Corps as a Master Sergeant. After retiring from the Marine Corps, I worked as a Farrier (Horseshoer), as well as a structural welder (Ironworker), as those were the most marketable skill that I had. I came to a point where old injuries came back to haunt me and I could no longer walk (several years later, thanks to a surgery through the VA, I can walk again; thankful for that). At this point, I changed professions and out of a desire to work with veterans, I returned to school, accomplishing all that was necessary to become a licensed counselor. I spent another career working for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, specifically as a counselor in the Readjustment Counseling Service (Vet Center). I recently retired from the Vet Center and now I work part-time here with Grow Therapy. As a retired Marine senior staff Non-Commissioned Officer (SNCO) and disabled combat veteran myself, the Vet Center was the perfect job. Vet Centers provide readjustment counseling to combat veterans and provide counseling to survivors of military sexual trauma (MST). Vet Centers also provide group counseling, bereavement counseling and couples counseling when this is determined to be of support to the veteran. Readjustment counseling many times consists of treating/addressing symptoms related to post-traumatic stress (PTSD), I.e., anxiety, depression, exaggerated startle response, hypervigilance, sleep disturbance, etc. Many veterans go on to work as first responders and working with many first responders as well as medical personal, has provided me with a great deal of additional experience.

People often ask me why I became a therapist. Helping people in short is why, but it does not quite grasp the process that happens. The more time I spend in this field, the simpler the answer gets, having someone’s trust in you to get to the root of someone’s struggle to make a longstanding impact on individuals. Although evidence-based practices are necessary and important, my main priority in the room is the client-therapist relationship. I am a big believer that the most important part of therapy is the relationship. As an attachment-focused therapist, a secure therapeutic relationship brings safety, trust, and growth. For the last 6 years, I worked for a mental health program that focused heavily on the mind-body connection. I value the importance of approaching clients, addressing both the mind and the body to treat the whole person.

Welcome! I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 10 years of experience in mental health. I specialize in helping individuals who are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship/ family conflicts, parenting issues/postpartum, life transitions, eating concerns/body image, and low self-esteem. Therapy is a safe space to explore, process, and understand your feelings. In addition to creating a safe space to understand your emotions, I may pull from different therapeutic approaches to tailor a treatment that correlates to your goals. For example, I may incorporate mindfulness practices and/or cognitive behavioral therapy (addressing negative thoughts). We can explore your childhood and your family's history, which may have left an emotional imprint. Or we can explore practical solutions for immediate relief.

Hi there, I’m Shanda. Does your child or teenager have a lot of “big feelings” leading to behaviors that are becoming difficult to understand or manage as a parent? Are you an adoptive or foster parent having trouble connecting with your child or teen? This can be a confusing and challenging role to fulfill. The same parenting rules do not apply to a "non-traditional" family system. If your biological, adopted, or foster child or teenager is struggling with depression, anxiety, anger, or ADHD, or has experienced a stressful life event such as bullying, relocation, grief/loss, or trauma and you’re not sure how to help as a parent, I am here to listen to your family’s needs and guide you toward hope, healing, and positive change. I empower parents and caregivers to support their children and families to overcome life’s challenges that can result in those “big feelings”. As a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Registered Play Therapist, I love blending play and art therapy, mindfulness, and conversation to get to the root of your and/or your child’s struggles. In our sessions together, I'll provide a safe, non-judgmental space and utilize evidence-based techniques so you and your family can overcome life’s challenges and connect on a deeper level. I’d love to meet you and work together!

Hi there and great job on taking that first step in considering if therapy is right for you. I invite you to come with me on a journey of your own choosing where we will walk together in darkness to find the light you’ve been seeking. Whether it’s life’s little annoying stressors or more complex issues, as a trauma survivor myself, I know firsthand what this is like and wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Whether you choose me or another therapist, make the choice to just give it a try. Sometimes all you need is another person to hold the light while you do the work you need to heal.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by California rather than a city like LA?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across California from San Francisco to San Diego! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in California.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
