I hold a deep respect for each person's unique story. I am passionate about supporting people in finding greater connections with themselves and those around them, and in being more present in their daily lives. Together we can craft an approach to counseling that works for you. I am a bilingual/bi-cultural therapist; able to do therapy in both English/Spanish. I am sensitive to inter-generational conflicts that arise due to acculturation issues. Therapy provides an opportunity to wonder about experiences, emotions, and desires that we may not otherwise have space to explore. This process can deepen our insight into the impact of personal history on our current behavioral and emotional patterns, allowing us a greater sense of self and choice in our lives and relationships. In the course of psychotherapy, we will create a space of non-judgmental curiosity, including space for creativity, playfulness, and humor. I help my patients develop and strengthen their ability to manage anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges so that they can live a more meaningful, mindful, and enjoyable life. I encourage my patients to work hard to grow and change, achieving the life they desire. I seek to develop a caring and supportive relationship with all my patients. You are a unique human being. There is no "one size fits all" therapy. Let's talk and see if I am the right fit to help you reach the goals you want for yourself. Together we will work to deepen self-awareness, presence, and sense of possibility. I use she/her pronouns. *** Please note that I am only able to schedule appointments on the hour (i.e. 3:00), and cannot accommodate appointments on the half hour (i.e. 3:30). Thank you for your understanding as we work to improve the scheduling platform. ***

Veronica Montoya has experience working with all ages, including adults, young adults, teens/adolescents, and children. She has worked with people in a broad range of areas, including anxiety, depression, substance use, parent-child relationships, self-esteem, decision-making issues, and body image issues. The most important aspect of my work with you will be to build a positive, trusting therapeutic relationship in which we can together work through whatever difficulties you may be facing. Being a therapist is my first career. I studied psychology with a minor in Spanish for my bachelor's degree and have a master's degree in mental health counseling (which led to me becoming a licensed mental health counselor). There are many reasons I am well-suited to be a therapist but to begin, I am nonjudgmental, caring, empathetic, and open. I have worked in a variety of areas, including private practice, residential treatment centers with adults and teens, and specialized therapeutic foster care with children. I have also worked with everyone from infants and toddlers to seniors. These various settings help me take a holistic approach when working with my clients.

Social work chose me! When I wrote my personal essay for my MSW, I realized social work had always surrounded me. I remember helping elderly neighbors, teaching friends how to count money, and researching services for my autistic brother. There were so many events between those gaps and yet to come. I always desired to help people. My brother’s diagnosis widened my eyes to my calling, but life had other plans for me and I became a secretary. As a secretary, I found myself being hired in the mental health arena, including the areas of AIDS research, mental health, addiction services, and college counseling. Social work is my second career but it's always been my first passion. I pull from both my personal and professional experiences and allow these experiences to teach and mold me.

You are here hoping to find that therapist who stands out to you because you want to find someone who can help you. The search can be overwhelming for some. Most of the profiles of therapists are going to say similar things. Most of which should be standard like brakes on a car. I cannot promise I'm the right one for you. Here is what I can tell you about my approach. I believe in being practical which means I will not use a lot of psycho-babble or fancy strategies. I have a tendency to be blunt. My wife says I'm the "bluntest politest man" she has ever met. I'm going to be real with you. I love couples/marriage counseling, and that is my main focus. However, about half of my clients have always been individuals. Some people just need a place to vent. Others need help solving a problem, and most people need a little of both. I know therapy might be a little intimidating or even scary to some. Try to think of it as a massage for your brain. It's a place where you can say whatever you want guilt-free.

I am honored to join people where they are at on their journey. I focus on positive goals for getting back on track or even transformation. As I realize the courage it takes to come to therapy, I focus on the patient/therapist relationship. There must first be an experience of safety and trust. Then, of course, the therapeutic work will follow. I utilize a warm, relaxed style with fierce reflection or gentle support as needed. I believe that everyone benefits from a therapeutic experience to attain the best version of themselves for the best quality of life. 1 utilize humor combined with therapeutic skills which makes my approach unique. Laughter isn't always appropriate, but it can be very helpful with reframing and bringing down barriers. With so many years of experience and training, I have a broad skill set and utilize multiple interventions to create a unique treatment plan for each person, couple, or family. Some of the modalities that I frequently utilize are: Solution- Focused therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psycho-education, Systems Theory, Emotion Focused Therapy, Behavioral Modification, Skills training and Motivational interviewing/coaching.

With an extensive 20-year background in the field, I possess a wealth of experience and expertise. My primary focus lies in the treatment of mood disorders, trauma, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), areas in which I specialize. With a laid-back demeanor, I strive to establish a safe and comfortable atmosphere for my clients. I embrace an eclectic approach to therapy, recognizing that a one-size-fits-all approach is inadequate in meeting the unique needs of each individual. I employ evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to address a variety of mental health conditions, including but not limited to anxiety disorders, depression, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), relationship and communication issues, grief and loss, life transitions, self-esteem and self-worth, and stress management.
