You don’t have to struggle alone! I look forward to the opportunity to work collaboratively with you in your journey in discovering how to make positive changes, decrease negative behaviors and thoughts, and help improve your mood and engagement with life! In our hectic world we often find ourselves afraid to take risks that could jeopardize the stable lives we have created for ourselves. We remain in jobs, relationships and old patterns that no longer work, while symptoms such as anxiety, depression, stress, anger and self-defeating patterns keep us from making real changes to our lives. If that sounds like you, you are stuck. We can feel lost and alone when we are unable to move forward, whether in work or a personal relationship. Therapy can help you break free of that and thrive. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a focus on teens, adults, and couples. I have worked with clients on concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and family reunification. I received my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University. I also minored in sociology.

Greetings, Life can be confusing, relationships can be stressful, and the present can make you feel anxious or depressed. Sometimes a painful past can surface into the moment, especially when situations are difficult or when you are experiencing major change. During these periods your mood and thoughts can be affected in negative ways. When you are feeling alone, disconnected, or confused, talking things through can make all the difference. I work with anyone struggling to find joy, peace, and fulfillment. I offer a safe, inviting space for you to share thoughts and feelings, to vent, to feel heard, and to reorient to meaning. Please allow me to assist you finding relief and clarity. I will meet you where you are at and welcome you. I address healing on multiple levels of the body-mind connection with a focus on the notion that caring about something or someone along with experiencing meaning can counterbalance the effects of hurt, a disturbing past, or a present stressful situation or transition. I have more than 20 years of experience helping clients navigate major change and transition, gain closure, and create new beginnings. I apply interventions from a mind-bind-being perspective and assess current life stressors to distinguish between situational mood and thought disturbances from those enduring and a consequence of previous hurt or trauma.

I'm an expert in treating high-level anxiety, depression, childhood trauma, infertility, and relationship difficulties. As your therapist, I tailor my approach to match the client's needs for continuous change, symptom relief, growth, and ignite personal change. I always had a passion for therapy. I knew at 7 years old this was my calling. I went on to study Sociology in my undergraduate years and went to the University of California, Santa Barbara. I then went on to get my Master's degree in Psychology from J.F.K University and graduated in 2008. In addition to my Master’s degree, I have an added emphasis of Somatic Psychology which is: ‘the study of the mind/body interface, the relationship between our physical matter and our energy, the interaction of our body structures with our thoughts and actions’. I pull from a multitude of theories and coaching techniques. Therapy can be long-term or goal-oriented with me. I find both have great advantages and I let the client guide me on that. I’m truly invested in our relationship and care deeply when working with clients. I work in Private Practice and have been a Clinical Supervisor for a Non-profit in the Bay Area. I appreciate doing private practice since I can have a deep, meaningful relationship that can help empower my clients and foster change.

Hi my name is Heidi Hernandez, I am a second-generation Filipino American from Hawaii and a first-generation college graduate. As a child of immigrant parents, I struggled with managing the influences of traditional Filipino beliefs while exploring my LGBTQ identity. My childhood experiences led me to a career in school counseling and mental health. I want to represent marginalized communities and provide youth and emerging adults with a safe space for compassion and empathy, to hold onto hope and realize their possibilities for a brighter future. I'm passionate about helping individuals live authentically with improved self-esteem, healthy relationships, and motivation to thrive. Are you experiencing a recent life transition that is causing you stress, anxiety, or depression? (e.g. moving, college, job change/loss, breakups, family changes, coming out) Are you ready to begin healing from childhood traumas and learn ways to develop a healthier relationship with yourself and others? Let's collaborate on prioritizing self-care and moving with more motivation, energy, and purpose. Are you having conflicts with family over generational or cultural expectations? I can help you learn ways to set healthy boundaries, learn to accept reality as it is and take control of the choices that align more with your values and goals. I can help you learn healthy ways to cope with worries and learn to tolerate uncertainty. I will sit with you through painful emotions and help you write a new story with more compassion toward yourself. Whatever place you are in your journey in self-healing I will be present and ready to go to work with you. I would be honored to share a safe space with you and help you work through your thoughts and emotions at your pace. I look forward to being your supporter, ally, and coach. We will learn, grow, and celebrate every small and big step toward living a more authentic, meaningful, and healthy life. Even if you decide later to not work with me, I will do my best to find you a provider that fits your needs!

So, congratulations for taking the first steps in caring for yourself. The journey of therapy is not easy. There will be times when it gets exhausting but as you continue through your path the answers will be revealed through the work you complete with your therapist. Do you worry about (or avoid) certain situations for fear of panic attacks/shortness of breath/stomach distress/intrusive thoughts of anticipated catastrophe? Do you stay up at night worrying about that thing you said/did/didn’t do/remembered/forgot/found on WebMD's symptom checker? Do you have specific fears that paralyze you? You may have an anxiety disorder. Anxiety sucks, therapy can help! I specialize in helping you put anxiety in its rightful place. Every emotion needs a place at the table, but when anxiety is the loudest (or only) voice life becomes out of balance, and our choices no longer feel like conscious decisions. My approach is based on balancing acceptance and change. I operate from a person-centered humanistic perspective. That means I offer a non-judgmental safe place to work on issues that don't always feel so safe, using warmth and humor. I incorporate EMDR, mindfulness based therapy, self-compassion, attachment work, and CBT anxiety reduction strategies. I believe in this work, and have seen the healing that is possible when people find the right treatment. I hear you. You've been going through the motions, avoiding pain, sometimes barely hanging on, and trying to live a "normal," happy life. But, your past keeps creeping up and interrupts your hopes and goals, negatively impacts your day to day life, and creates relationship struggles. Either way, your life isn't going the way you want it to. Reaching out to a therapist can feel scary, embarrassing, even shameful, but you're tired of not living. You are ready to move forward, beyond the pain, sadness, fear, and difficulty that has been in your life so far. It's time to reach out.

If so there is hope, you are not alone as I will support you and assist you with developing appropriate coping skills. Sometimes our circumstances and mental state can detour us from being our best selves. However, we are all human and can all use help and support that is consistent. Many suffer in depression, anxiety and with processing trauma. There is a way to actively manage these conditions and relieve yourself from the guilt and shame that your emotions or your diagnosis may have produced over time. It will be my pleasure to support you with identifying the source of your adverse emotions, identifying the root and then from there assist you with properly processing. Therapy with me is not a dictatorship you will take the lead as no one knows you better than you know yourself. My role is to support you, encourage you and cheer you on as you go from struggling to actively managing!

Hello, I was born and raised in Stockton, California. I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and in 1997, after 25 yeas of service, I retired from the Marine Corps as a Master Sergeant. After retiring from the Marine Corps, I worked as a Farrier (Horseshoer), as well as a structural welder (Ironworker), as those were the most marketable skill that I had. I came to a point where old injuries came back to haunt me and I could no longer walk (several years later, thanks to a surgery through the VA, I can walk again; thankful for that). At this point, I changed professions and out of a desire to work with veterans, I returned to school, accomplishing all that was necessary to become a licensed counselor. I spent another career working for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, specifically as a counselor in the Readjustment Counseling Service (Vet Center). I recently retired from the Vet Center and now I work part-time here with Grow Therapy. As a retired Marine senior staff Non-Commissioned Officer (SNCO) and disabled combat veteran myself, the Vet Center was the perfect job. Vet Centers provide readjustment counseling to combat veterans and provide counseling to survivors of military sexual trauma (MST). Vet Centers also provide group counseling, bereavement counseling and couples counseling when this is determined to be of support to the veteran. Readjustment counseling many times consists of treating/addressing symptoms related to post-traumatic stress (PTSD), I.e., anxiety, depression, exaggerated startle response, hypervigilance, sleep disturbance, etc. Many veterans go on to work as first responders and working with many first responders as well as medical personal, has provided me with a great deal of additional experience.
