Hey there, I'm Valerie!
Do you feel like no matter what you do, things aren't going the way you'd like? Are you struggling to maintain healthy relationships, work and life in general? Is it hard to be kind and compassionate to yourself?
I help clients manage depression, anxiety, and to process all kinds of trauma. Together, we can identify what's not working and get you where you would like to be. I use a holistic approach, addressing the needs of your mind, body and spirit. I also work extensively with all kinds of relationship challenges and work to establish healthy relationships with family members, partners, children, and friends.
Whatever you are dealing with, I'm here to help. Seeking therapy can feel scary and I admire the courage it took for you to get started. You deserve a safe space to be heard, understood, and have the opportunity to heal and grow. In our sessions together, I'll meet you with compassion and evidence-based techniques to help you overcome anything you are ready to change. Let's get this started.

Hi there! I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor based in Florida. I provide an integrative, client-centered approach to therapy that prioritizes trust, collaboration, and emotional safety. My therapeutic approach is collaborative and individualized, recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all path to healing. I draw from evidence-based modalities including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), among other integrative interventions. My clients are actively involved in treatment planning, goal setting, and selecting therapeutic strategies. If one approach does not resonate, we work together to explore alternatives that best support your growth. Throughout the process, I strive to balance compassion and unconditional positive regard with thoughtful challenges that encourage lasting change.
Originally from Venezuela, I am bilingual and provide therapy in both English and Spanish. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Florida International University in 2014 and my Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Florida International University in 2018. Over the past eight years, I have worked with diverse populations across multiple levels of care, including residential treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and outpatient settings.
What typically surprises people is that I am the 11th of 13 children - all from the same parents. Growing up with so many siblings has given me a great opportunity to learn about family dynamics and effective discipline. My parents did a great job of maintaining a safe and well-behaved home, and I use their example as a template while also incorporating my own experience as a parent for working with families today.
As for my approach to therapy, I use several different theories depending on the need of the client; however, my primary mode is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). It just fits my personality. If you are looking for a therapist who focuses solely on your emotions and how you're feeling on any given day, then I will not be a good fit for you. On the other hand, if you're looking for a therapist who not only does all that but who will also listen to everything you say (as well as the meaning behind what you say) and then challenge your thinking habits to help you find more effective and productive thinking patterns, then I'm on board for that. I learned a long time ago that many clients do not want things "Sugar Coated", but rather prefer their therapist to be respectfully bold and blunt. If this is who you are looking for in a therapist, then let's get to work.

I have been in the mental health field since 2007. I was informed when I first started in this field that the average time for people to stay in the field is two years. I am still in the field because helping others is more than a career choice for me, it is my passion in life. Helping others is a personal goal of mine. I look forward to the opportunity. I enjoy seeing people make positive changes in their lives. I have worked with families, couples, children, adolescents and teens, from various cultures and backgrounds. Each case and each client is unique in their way and each client is important.
My particular areas of expertise are depression, anxiety, substance abuse, marriage counseling and family counseling. I refer to myself as a "simple-minded therapist" which means we will explore simple ways to address the presenting concerns because many times the solutions are so simple they can be easily overlooked. I am a firm believer that holding a conversation is more productive than expounding on theoretical approaches.
