LCSW, 20 years of experience
New to Grow
Hello! I am John Getchell, an experienced Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience. My career has taken me from federal prisons, to military hospitals, the VA, and private practice, where I have worked with trauma, depression, grief, OCD, and very complex family dynamics. My goal is to walk alongside you as we face life's challenges, helping you to find clarity, strength, and healthier ways of living. Together, we will work on creating real change so you can experience peace and freedom.
In our first session, you can expect a welcoming and non-judgmental space where we will get to know each other and talk about what brings you to therapy. I will ask some questions to better understand your story, your goals, and the challenges you are facing. By the end of the session, you will have a clearer sense of the process and understand the initial steps we will take together.
My greatest strengths are my ability to combine deep compassion with practical, evidenced based strategies. I don't just focus on insight; I guide clients toward action and lasting change.
I work best with people who who feel stuck in cycles of fear, anxiety, or self-doubt and are looking for a practical and compassionate approach to change. Many of my clients over the years have felt overwhelmed with anxiety, unresolved grief, or painful family dynamics. Sometimes all three. If you are looking for a therapist who is supportive and focused on change, I am here to support you.
I provide a safe space for clients to process loss, honor their loved one, and find ways to carry grief while still moving forward.
I use structural family therapy by looking at how families interact, helping them shift boundaries and patterns so relationships become healthier and more supportive.
I use ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) with clients struggling with OCD by gradually helping them face the thoughts, images, or situations that trigger their anxiety, while resisting the urge to engage in compulsions. Over time, this breaks the cycle or fear, teaching people they can tolerate uncertainty and regain freedom in their lives. It is the gold standard for OCD therapy. Expect to feel better!
I help clients recognize rigid and self-defeating thoughts that get in their way and help them to replace and reframe to a more balanced, rational approach. This reduces distress and improves resilience!
