Many Black men carry responsibility, emotion, and expectation without having a space to process what they’re carrying. Over time, this can show up as stress, anger, anxiety, or feeling worn down. I provide individual therapy for Black men and for adolescents who need a space where they are understood. I also help parents and caregivers — especially those raising Black and Brown boys and families in blended or co-parenting systems — build clarity, connection, and consistent discipline. My approach is relational, culturally informed, and focused on helping you understand patterns, reduce overwhelm, and strengthen your family system.

believe healing is not about fixing what is “wrong,” but about building a kinder, more trusting relationship with yourself. I work with adolescents and adults who are navigating life transitions, issues around identity and self esteem, or feeling the lingering effects of traumatic experiences. Together we will work towards restoring a sense of grounding, choice, and self-compassion. With compassion and curiosity, the survival responses that once protected us can begin to soften opening the door to healing, thriving, and building a life lived with intention. My approach is heart centered and trauma informed. My work integrates EMDR (technique for reprocessing traumatic experiences), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS). As a certified yoga teacher and Reiki practitioner, I value the body’s wisdom and may incorporate mindfulness or somatic awareness into our sessions. Whether you’re brand new to therapy or returning after time away, my hope is to offer a space that feels welcoming, supportive, and collaborative. I believe that you are the expert on yourself and I am here to help guide you along your healing journey to help you move towards your goals and a life that feels more authentic and aligned.

I'm a psychotherapist with 35-plus years of experience. After completing training in clinical social work and psychology at the University of Maryland (M.S.W., 1988) and Saybrook Institute (Ph.D., 1991), I began practicing as a family, couples and individual therapist. I have hosted on radio/podcasts, have written two books and thousands of self-help articles in my "Life's a Beach" column for nationwide Gannett media. I love working with clients in the here-and-now, and finding solutions to move forward with life. My primary goal is to help you help yourself. I will guide and coach you, not tell you what to do. Is life feeling heavy right now? Does it feel like the harder you try, the more lost you become? When navigating a major life transition—like a recent loss, an empty nest, a career shift, or an ending relationship—your mind tries to think its way through the change, but your nervous system carries the actual burden. If you have spent months talking about your stress in therapy but your body still feels exhausted, anxious, or stuck, somatic work may be the missing piece. I provide a warm, gentle space specializing in somatic (body-centered) therapy and mindfulness for women experiencing: The heavy, physical ache of deep burnout and grief A constant tightness in the chest or unshakeable fatigue Feeling completely disconnected from your own body We won’t just analyze your overwhelm; we will work together to help your body safely release it. You don’t have to navigate this threshold alone. Let’s help you breathe a little deeper and feel truly grounded again. Please Note: I believe healing burnout starts with modeling it. I deliberately limit my client slots so I can show up with total clinical presence, depth, and intention—giving you a calm, grounded space to slow down and heal.

I take a collaborative and flexible approach to therapy, and I’ll meet you where you are each time we talk. You’re welcome to bring whatever feels most important that day, or I can help guide things if it feels hard to know where to start. My goal is for you to feel comfortable, supported, and at ease being open and honest in our conversations. I also like to use psychoeducation to help make sense of what you’re experiencing; how your thoughts, emotions, and body responses connect. When we notice patterns that may be unhelpful or not fully accurate, I’ll gently help you look at them from a different angle and practice new ways of thinking. Over time, we’ll work together to build a set of tools you can rely on outside of session, so you feel more confident handling life’s ups and downs. If I notice an opportunity to go a bit deeper into something, I may gently open that space with you to explore what else might be underneath; especially emotions that haven’t had much room yet. Healing often involves allowing ourselves to feel what we’ve had to hold in or push away, at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you.

Hey there! It is so nice to meet you. I'm Tanya Parnes, and I have been working with clients for over 15 years to help them overcome obstacles in their paths, find ways through their stressors and identify the solutions they already had within but just couldn't see. When I work with clients they often say, they really enjoy feeling heard, understood and relieved to feel less alone. I meet with a lot of people who feel truly stuck in their circumstances, and just cannot see a way out. They often feel stressed, frustrated and lonely. Everything seems like too much and they cannot figure it out no matter how many ways they've tried. I believe it is completely possible to get out of the same cycles that plague you & keep you stuck on that never ending hamster wheel. It is not always easy, but the end rewards make up for it. Learning to let go, realizing there is a way forward and seeing a future without the problems that have been recurring where things are more manageable than ever before is my goal. My clinical skills and techniques will help you get there by learning tools that help you end those cycles and start living the life you have always wanted and dreamed of. Together, we will find better ways to handle difficulties and work through tough times redirecting energy and focus to things that are in your control which you have the power to change!

I listen to my clients and their needs to gain an understanding of their perspectives and presenting issues. The way I tailor sessions depends on the particular client, issues, and needs. Different clients require different methods. I am open, honest, empathetic and non-judgmental, but also tell it like it is.

Because sleep quality is critical to physical and mental health I am passionate about helping people get good sleep. I received my PhD from Duke University and have been a practicing psychologist for several decades. I work primarily with behavioral sleep medicine because sleep problems are so widespread, and there are not enough specialists to meet the need. I have published several articles and a book on sleep and am the director of the insomnia course for the World Sleep Academy, as well as a member of the Outreach and Public Education Committee, Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine. I continue working with people with anxiety, depression, and couples issues on a limited basis. The methods I use are evidence-based and trauma-informed. I am also an ordained member of the clergy (rabbi) and consider one's spirituality an important part of treatment for many, though not all, people. I’ve practiced telehealth exclusively since early 2020. Most people appreciate working this way because of convenience. Therapy is not adversely affected, and I am even able to do hypnotherapy via telehealth.

I believe that each one of us has the answers to our problems inside of us. However, sometimes we need someone on our journey to help us unlock those answers by asking the right questions---things you may not have considered, presenting proven strategies, and psychoeducation. Although, you will make strides with the energy and effort you give, the number one predictor that one will improve is the quality of the therapeutic relationship. I hope to provide a place of warmth, compassion, and acceptance in which you feel empowered and free to approach any concerns. I am here to help you along on your journey. I am a licensed mental health counselor in Arizona, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Utah. I graduated from Florida Atlantic University with an Educational Specialist degree in Mental Health Counseling. I also earned a Master's of Art from Roosevelt University. I have experience working with youth and their families as well as adults. The theoretical framework that I usually draw from is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. I also apply Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing Techniques as needed. I address trauma, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, interpersonal skills, self-esteem, anger, problem-solving, and decision-making. In conjunction with therapy, I believe that exercise, proper nutrition, and good sleep hygiene are an integral part of overcoming mental health concerns. Change, even positive change can be challenging and uncomfortable. I hope to provide the necessary support as a champion of change.
