I'm a clinical social worker by profession. I've worked in all aspects of my field from running a statewide program to working in hospitals, federal EAPs, to community clinics and private practice. I have worked with people from many different backgrounds, but I especially like to work with people who are from communities who have historically been marginalized. We are living in challenging times. I want those clients to know I hear them and I see them.

In the past decade, I’ve worked with clients who are so vastly different, yet in their humanity, so alike. From narcotic treatment facilities, assisted living communities, and community mental health centers, the struggle with addiction, or a history of traumatic experiences, the common thread is human suffering and one’s incredible capacity for healing and growth. I truly believe that people already have everything they need to grow and heal, and the therapeutic relationship is simply the space we create where one can find their strengths. My ideal client is willing to engage in therapy to heal, grow or simply feel better. I am able to work with a variety of people from different populations due to my non-judgmental stance and curiosity about other people. I am adept at working with individuals who experience multiple problems simultaneously due to my willingness to work with other providers. I am trauma informed and culturally sensitive. I use an Existential-Humanistic perspective blended with an understanding of each individual's unique character defenses to focus on emotions in the moment. I pull from many intervention modalities to tailor an evidence-based and individualized experience of human connectedness that is based in compassion. I am an EMDR-trained therapist. I work with clients 18 years and older individually or in groups. Special populations I treat include LGBTQIA+, BIPOC individuals experiencing racial trauma, intergenerational trauma or both, men, perinatal/postnatal support, survivors of Trauma, older adults (60+), active military, veterans and their adult family members. Hi there, I'm Laurie! Do you wish providers would look at you through a whole person lens instead of discussing health and mental health separately? Do you want a provider for your child who is playful and skilled at engaging children? Are you an adult who likes a more personal, connected approach to therapy? Do you have a teen who has had difficulty connecting to other providers? Well look no further! I enjoy using storytelling, videos, and conversation to help clients of all ages improve self-esteem, self-worth and gain a better understanding of sense of self. A licensed clinical social worker and board-certified supervisor with over 25 years of experience working with children, teens, and adults, I spent much of that time working for the world-renowned Kennedy Krieger Institute, a Johns Hopkins affiliate, where I was also in leadership. I have post-graduate certificates in Treating Children & Adolescents, Leadership, Fitness Nutrition, and Integrative Medicine for Mental Health providers. More personally, I love hiking, watching Marvel movies, lifting weights, and crowd surfing at concerts. I believe we should never stop playing like children!

For those who struggle with decision-regret and anxiety around making the perfect choice, picking a therapist is three steps into the therapy already - if you're here reading this and that's you, I commend you as your therapy has already begun. Anxious and seemingly uncontrollable thoughts, "imposter syndrome", endless struggles to be perfect, only to be met with guilt and regret; all uncomfortable things that we humans try to avoid and control, yet all of that avoiding and controlling just doesn't seem to do any good. You're here to learn better ways to manage these experiences, and that's where I can help. I leverage 14 years of clinical experience as an adjunct professor in clinical social work and as a therapist in the public and private sectors in Canada, the US and Australia to assist my clients. I am a well traveled surfer, climber, author, entrepenuer, and musician and I enjoy spending time in my backyard that is the central coast of California, exploring all that it has to offer.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by state rather than a city?

Why filter by state rather than a city? When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across the entire state. If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near your address.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD)?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD), is filtering therapists in Colorado that work with patients with similar concerns.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
