Hi there, I'm Denise. Do you feel anxious, worried, or depressed and overwhelmed with your life? Are you struggling to feel happy? Do you feel past trauma is affecting your ability to heal? Is it hard to be kind to yourself or to tell yourself that you are doing all that you can? Together, we can build a safe place so that we can find what's not working for you and get you back to a place where your mind, body, and spirit feel at ease. We'll use a mindfulness approach and identify those negative thoughts and come up with a balanced adaptive thought that can help you feel better. All of this comes from a strength based, trauma informed, culturally informed perspective where we will identify your strengths and your plan to help yourself heal. I'm here to help and understand that seeking therapy can feel overwhelming and scary but you're making the right choice. You deserve a safe space to heal and grow. In our sessions together, I'll meet you with compassion and evidence-based techniques so you can overcome the thoughts and habits holding you back.

Do you feel that life is more difficult than it should be? Are you feeling overburdened by worry or pulled down by hopelessness? These feelings are common and symptoms of anxiety and depression do a good job of making us feel pessimistic about getting past such struggles. If you're willing to be honest and have an idea of how you'd like your life to be different, therapy can help you overcome many personal challenges. It is normal to have many questions (Where do I start? What do I say?) and to feel overwhelmed by the thought of starting therapy. By far the best predictor of success is how comfortable a person feels when talking with their therapist. While there is no way to guarantee a person and a therapist are a good fit, it is best to keep this in mind throughout treatment.

I find fulfillment in aiding adults who are striving to regain the chance to foster emotional and relational harmony. In my work with individuals on their mental and functional health, life stages, spiritual and relational paths, I employ both evidence-based and unconventional strategies that are customized to your unique needs and overall wellness. My practice is dedicated to helping individuals recognize their buried emotions and transform unhealthy internal dialogue, viewpoints, and actions. Through a variety of methods and interventions, I guide clients in revealing persistent negative thoughts, understanding their roots, and developing new thought and emotional patterns. By concentrating on how individuals perceive their self-concepts and interpersonal connections, I encourage clients to release detrimental thought habits and reformulate their mental approach, thereby diminishing self-criticism and anxiety, and enhancing communication across all areas of life. This is accomplished by offering a non-judgmental and secure environment, attentively listening to your issues, and tailoring interventions to assist you in achieving your objectives. Hello, I was born and raised in Stockton, California. I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and in 1997, after 25 yeas of service, I retired from the Marine Corps as a Master Sergeant. After retiring from the Marine Corps, I worked as a Farrier (Horseshoer), as well as a structural welder (Ironworker), as those were the most marketable skill that I had. I came to a point where old injuries came back to haunt me and I could no longer walk (several years later, thanks to a surgery through the VA, I can walk again; thankful for that). At this point, I changed professions and out of a desire to work with veterans, I returned to school, accomplishing all that was necessary to become a licensed counselor. I spent another career working for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, specifically as a counselor in the Readjustment Counseling Service (Vet Center). I recently retired from the Vet Center and now I work part-time here with Grow Therapy. As a retired Marine senior staff Non-Commissioned Officer (SNCO) and disabled combat veteran myself, the Vet Center was the perfect job. Vet Centers provide readjustment counseling to combat veterans and provide counseling to survivors of military sexual trauma (MST). Vet Centers also provide group counseling, bereavement counseling and couples counseling when this is determined to be of support to the veteran. Readjustment counseling many times consists of treating/addressing symptoms related to post-traumatic stress (PTSD), I.e., anxiety, depression, exaggerated startle response, hypervigilance, sleep disturbance, etc. Many veterans go on to work as first responders and working with many first responders as well as medical personal, has provided me with a great deal of additional experience.

My role in the session is to help you process some of the challenges you are experiencing and offer skills that can help create the change you want to see in your life. With more than 25 years experience in helping adults improve their relationships and manage interpersonal stressors, my clinical strengths include treating mood disorders, and addressing self-injurious and self-sabotaging behaviors. I provide a therapeutic space to enhance your motivation and to get “unstuck”. I offer you a safe, non-judgmental space to process your feelings, thoughts and behaviors and help you explore alternative actions you can take in response to the stressors you are facing. Restoring clients to a state of physical, mental and emotional health is the most rewarding aspect of my practice and I rely heavily on the latest advances in behavioral science to ensure my clients continue to receive the best therapeutic services available. I've been a Marriage Family Therapist for 22 years. Michael (and his associates) use humanistic, psychodynamic, and CBT treatments for depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, substance use disorders, adolescent turmoil, trauma, transitions, grief, self esteem, and other life challenges. I enjoy working with adults, adolescents and couples. Michael and his team uses a non-judgmental, caring, and often uplifting approach that includes mindfulness and an appreciation and respect for diverse clientele, ethnicity, spiritual/religious, orientation and identity issues. I have my own private practice but I also have a group practice with four amazing therapists who work for me. Your life is changing, and you’re not sure why you’re not handling it better. In my work with clients, I’ve seen that even good changes can make usually well-adjusted people struggle with day-to-day stress that didn’t seem to be a challenge in the past. I’ve worked with people who struggle with communicating emotions, prioritizing themselves, or feeling like their best is not good enough. If you feel like you can identify with those experiences and are not sure how to change things, I’d love to work with you.
